  • Ford's electric car (BEV) Mustang Mach-E has major problems in Teknikens Värld's avoidance maneuvre test, also known as ”the moose test”. It barely makes it in 68 km/h (42.3 mph). The competitors perform the test much better with speeds up to 75 km/h (46.6 mph).
    You can read more about the failure, and how the three competitors perform, here:

    This is likely a case of too much weight (especially in the rear of the car) and not enough tire. The Mach E uses stupidly narrow tires (225mm), which means it’s tires are only 10mm wider (less than half an inch) than the tires that come on my Chevy Bolt, yet it weighs as much as 1200 lbs more than my Bolt. The long range models need 245 width tires minimum, it’s simply overloading the stock width tires. You can see the stability control is already trying to mitigate the rear end rotation by locking up the front outer brake (causes the front end to push wide and allows the rear end to regain grip). This isn’t so much a software issue as it is just trying to make up for the poor efficiency with tires that are too small. The Model Y and Ioniq5 both weigh less and have wider tires (245 or 255 I believe) than the Mach E yet get better efficiency.

    • @MengLinWu
      @MengLinWu 2 роки тому +3

      Good observation. My guess is Ford went with skinny tires, which lower drag, to improve range. It’s interesting to think that you can indirectly improve handling by making better batteries.
      i3 was probably an extreme example of using skinny tires to salvage bad range.

    • @DtEW
      @DtEW Рік тому

      Even more damning is the fact that the Mach-E actually carries a little less weight on its rear axle in an absolute sense, and significantly less in a proportional sense. The Ford Mach-E AWD ER distributes its 4838 lbs. 50/50, meaning 2419 lbs. on the rear axle on 225-width tires. The Tesla Model Y LR distributes its 4555 lbs. 46F/54R (aside: this is weight distribution of a MR ICE car, but probably not the polar moment), meaning 2460lbs on the rear axle on 255-width tires. If the Mach-E was shod anywhere near appropriately, it should be more stable than the Model Y. Yet even with anemic tires, the Ford Mach-E AWD ER achieves a combined efficiency of only 370 Wh/mi, compared to that of the Model Y's 276 Wh/mi (19" wheels) and 304 Wh/mi (21" wheels). Ford has some real catching-up to do in terms of energy efficiency before they can even begin to sacrifice any of it to equip the Mach-E with wider, vehicle-weight-appropriate tires.

    Ford doesn't have a good track record with chassis damping. I remember autocrossing a Mustang 5.0L with the "track pack," and it was surprisingly softly sprung and WAY under damped. It was so bad in this regard that the car was easy to spin out if you weren't managing inertia all the time. I was amazed that even with a track oriented upgrade configuration, Ford still was vastly under controlled. Why do I bring this up? Well, this is somewhat of a common engineering problem at Ford. Many of their vehicles are dynamically...uh...weird. There's seldom a modern Ford that feels remotely ok to me. I race cars as a hobby in autocross and rallycross. I've been in everything from a Honda Civic to a Viper. I've modified my own vehicles for over a decade. Ford consistently has the goofiest suspension tuning of any brand I ever drive. The geometry, springs, and dampers all always feel off. It's kind of like the car's designed on paper and optimized against some computer metrics, and that's it, relying heavily on test numbers but not actual driving. I don't care if I'm driving a Focus, a F150, or an Edge, they're all weird cars. As of recent, maybe the Ranger has been the most normal thing I've ever driven of theirs, but that was also a FX4 with a little firmer of a setup than normal. I guess I could say I also liked the old Raptor too, although I only got to drive one pretty briefly.

    Most manufacturers design their ESC systems with different assumptions than the rules of the moose test. For example, they assume this sort of maneuver is going to be done while braking, but the moose test is done under power. Most Porsches also perform poorly on the moose test.
