This is the same game that literally spent years trying to convince their players that having more than 9 deck slots would be too confusing for new users
They forgor 💀
To be fair, that was a very different design team.
Design teams have changed pretty drastically
Yeah, same game, different designers, directors, and owners.
To be honest, after this video I am inclined to agree with the original statement "9 deck slots would be too confusing for new users".
The sensory overload while not providing helpful information but actively hiding features is truly astonishing.
It's like you have to finish a puzzle game before you can play the actual game.
Thanks for the laughs day9 : )
They're outsourcing Hearthstone to those shovelware mobile Gacha RPG people
The most egregious thing is probably that you can lose out on catch Up cards if you buy some too early. Yiikes!
Look, I’m not one to regularly defend corporations, let alone Blizzard, but I least want us to acknowledge that he’s getting this overwhelming deluge of contextless popups because he’s a returning player. The new player experience does a better job of rolling features out to players.
The funniest part of this comment is that he accidentally got sent to a literal puzzle game.
Hearthstone's UI is a tragedy
I thought he was exaggerating at first, but then that menu with Arthas showed up and I thought ok yup he's right.
Tbf, that only happens when you go to solo adventures or do the easter egg.
I'm pretty sure that the easter egg sending you to solo adventures after you finish it is a bug, but they'll never fix it.
Arthas yelling in your face never fails to make me laugh 😂
Is the "ah, you are finally awake" from Skyrim kind of comedy. I love it.
Modes?! Aren't these modes?! Made me burst out laughing. Hearthstone has such a UI/UX problem.
I mean what in the world was wrong with "other modes"
I'm not sure Sean's aware of just how many new modes came out since he left, though. There's been, like, six. A couple of them don't even exist any more.
Basically, Hearthstone and Battlegrounds get to be on the main menu because that's what people play 99% of the time.
@@KnownAsKenjiThat doesn't matter though. You know that because you've probably continued playing some or all of this time. A new player or even a returning player has absolutely zero clue as to what's going on. Why are you trying to defend this crap? It's bad and you know it.
@@KnownAsKenji duels has existed for at least 3 or 4 years and it still says "beta" lol
I would kill for someone in working on the Ux and Ui in Blizzard to react to this video.
It's just a plastic skeleton with an magic 8ball duct taped to it
Blizzard : i see no problems , he just need to piece things together
Apparently, a bunch of devs were watching, including the principal game designer.
@@sams.975 really?
@Mene0 Yeah, it comes up during the pack opening portion of the stream, I think. Day9 has tons of connections to the game dev world. Notably, when he finds out they're on, he does tone down his dunking all over it and tries to be a bit more constructive, but that might also just be because he got to actual gameplay instead of interface nonsense.
As someone who is now returning to Hearthstone, I had the same reaction to all those free gold cards
It's the same with coming back to some of their other games. A wow player coming back to modern wow after 10+ years would be completely and utterly lost
As someone who also hasn't touched hearthstone since 2018:
This video was absolutely incredible
Same, and same.
Personally, I installed, played two games of Battlegrounds, and haven't touched it since.
Same hear! Though I found it, let's say about 25 minutes after trying to start playing again 🤣
Arthas followed by "Choose a mode?!" Had me in stitches
8:18 I lost my my shit at this part 😂😂😂
Dude as an MBA student this had me dyinggggg
I have never laughed so hard. God, I missed Day9 Hearthstone.
yeah, after taking a break for years, it was annoying that the game didn't actually TELL me what ANYTHING in the menus were.
As someone who also hasn't played hearthstone in seven years, wth was annnnyyyy of that I'm so utterly confused. I cannot believe how confusing and overwhelming this new player experience is
Arthas jumpscare
This is such a sharp contrast to all the things that made Hearthstone approachable. Oh my gosh it's hilarious but also really sad.
This should be required watching for all of Team 5.
You do realize that it's the same reason it was approachable in the beta that also tanked its future growth. Its simplistic design bled too far into the future and Ben Brode himself expressed a lack of desire to implement more user friendly features (deck slot debacle, being able to copy decks, opening multiple packs). When the newer devs finally got around to it, they had to work with the old code, which isn't always something that works out smoothly. You saw it when they first implemented the tavern pass and the mess it was.
But those quality of life features didn't also necessitate the absurd feature creep. Those are different things.
@@anthonypillarella Easy to say when you're not the one coding the thing. We don't know how the game was originally designed although the hesitation to add features was probably due to the fact that the game was literally stitched together by duct tape and dreams (remember the spaghetti code memes?).
@@GaussianEntity This has nothing to do with code, and everything to do with decisions about WHAT to code.
Adding more currencies and quests on top of the ones that already existed adds more complications and potential bugs.
Our complaints aren't about performance, crashing, or anything else affected by code. They're about the game just having too much.
@@anthonypillarella What to code is also influenced by the previous code. Or what, is tech debt not a thing anymore??? If your previous design doesn't allow for ways to easily add on new features, you're obviously going to have a hard time. Why else would Ben Brode push back against adding more deck slots? "Too confusing for new players" isn't an excuse unless the real reason was that you had to break your game in order to do that.
Day9s fear at the golden cards had me rolling
This genuinely had me doubled over laughing! Welcome back Sean!
If couldn’t stop laughing😂 especially in the last 5 mins… I watched on repeat lol. Hearthstone has changed so much…😂😂😂
What a banger of a video, absolutely hilarious. Holy shit what a mess of a UI.
The "I'm gonna open these packs...oh pulled a sneaky on ya...but what if I did?" and having the weirdos in chat lose their minds is peak.
As a former CMO and CRO expert, this UX/UI is insane.
I genuinly hope someone at blizzard watched this and realized their ui is objectively unhinged lmao
I feel soooo validated!! I don’t even know what game I was trying to play when I re-opened Hearthstone after 8 years
If you think Hearthstone's starting menu is confusing, you haven't seen Shadowverse's starting menu. It is insane how many things are happening there at once.
What? A big screen with nice artwork, 2 clearly labeled buttons and the message "TAP TO START" at the bottom is more confusing than this mess? :p
Understanding the hearthstone UI is a game in and of itself
That's what happens when you are an indie company and you cant afford a single UX employee. The video is so fun btw 😂
I haven't laughed this hard all year, this is incredible!
I was laughing for nearly all of the video even though I already watched the VOD. Thank you Day9, you make my life more enjoyable❤
I had this exact same experience when I opened Hearthstone after a similar time gap a month or so ago! I clicked loads of stuff, had no idea what was going on, logged out and uninstalled.
"What in the legitimate fuck did you just make me do?" Day9 at his finest.
6:50
hes so fucking hilarious
love to see sean back at hearthstone - hope to see some more highlights! i still go back and watch "best of day9 - hearthstone" videos from 6-7 years ago and have a good laugh.
This was one of the most enjoyable hearthstone clips I've seen. Bless you Sean
My wife and I agree. This video is PEAK Day9.
This was absolutely worth the wait. Thank you, editor.
Thank you for this intro... I used to love HS at launch
It has been a while since something has made me laugh so hard tears were streaming down my face for 10+ minutes. Thank you.
i love the comeback hearthstone content, i wish u keep playing hearthstone
This is some legendary stuff.
I just wanna say that I watched the 2005 StarCraft UA-cam video for the first time as well as your Vlog number 100. They meant so much to me, even though I’m not a StarCraft player, I just wanted to say thank you.
I have been loving seeing oyu play hearthstone again, I have watched every video, and I even put it on to go to sleep lmao Thank you for so much content!
8:19 was by far the best part holy shit
The old "Extra deck slots are too confusing" Design Team and the new "Game Mode: Modes" Design Team would fight to the death if given the chance.
Glad you did this month, rediscovering you a decade later has been very rewarding.
I gotta see this whole stream now, oh man I'm in tears
Lets be real though, the guy telling him to click the screw was clearly looking to troll him with something that's supposed to be convoluted, and he nailed it.
I have never felt so validated, I recently tried getting into HS again and I was so lost in the menus
Shoot this shit directly into my interface all day long. 😂😂😂 “Are these not MODES??” 😂😂
It's been a long time since I've laughed this hard at something this strange. Incredible.
This is incredible
Wonderful content!
this was so great
At first I thought he was overexaggerating until he talked about the catch up packs and I had no idea where you would find them. He does bring up a load of good points about lack of information, especially about the packs
I feel heard. Thank you Day9
They should replace the tutorial in Hearthstone with this video.
I have become a responsible father now, not realy much time to watch your content. I watched you all the way back with your trumpets joke and starcraft 2 era. This is good stuff! Glad to be laughing to your voice again
I was laughing through the whole VOD but when it got to 9:07 and the Modes moment I lost it lol
words cannot express how happy i am to have seen this Day9 hearthstone content. what a throw back, your the only reason i even tried the game. As someone who came back about a year ago and was also overwhelmed by the jarring change, it was freaking halarious to watch you go through the same strife.
I feel like a bad human and StarCraft fan for not knowing Tasteless and Day9 are brothers.
W vid, great to see you visit Hearthstone again!
I laughed for 10 minutes straight, thank you for this
I have never seen the "Ketchup" Packs in action, but my god. Seeing the card explosion for the first time, I made the same face you did when you ended up in the Death Knight adventure screen.
thank you for this video because sometime I forget you're the funniest. thanks day[9]
Welcome back!!
I tried to come back when i saw day9 was coming back, but i was equally overwhelmed. I haven't played it since lol
Holy crap have I missed this guy
Day 9 and Hearthstone are like pb and j, just the perfect combo
That was so freaking funny! On one hand it makes me want to come back to that game too, and on the other I never want to play it again 😂
That Easter egg rant was glorious.
I missed day9 on Hearthstone. I haven't laughed this hard in a while 🤣
this is the most entertaining hs video ive seen in years,
Honestly when a game does this to me I sometimes get so tired that I just wait until tomorrow to deal with all that
Sean can always make me cry laughing lmfao
this game has never heard of the phrase "less is more"
It has, but it was many moons ago. In fact, the reason why Hearthstone was so popular when it came out was that it was so very simplistic and intuitive. It was so good in its reduced nature that many CCGs imitated it after that.
But as Sean hilariously showed, those days are long gone. :D
yeah i played it during the beta, when there was literally just 1 deck.... that was fun, now it's just a quazoillion combinations and combos and I guess now you are just lucking when it comes to whether you are countering your opponents deck or not, anyways, not getting into in it again since the learning curve would be huge@@sudokucoach
@@itskittymeno. Coming from a current wild player. No, game is just much more fast paced. You need to setup and react faster. HS before was just play a larger thing and trade, now it’s a game of wincons and tempo.
@@yedigemagavin1694 It doesn't seem like it from watching. It seems like every class has fuck tons of board clear, card draw and board fill. It seems like your entire agency in the game is maximizing the potential of your RNG and strategy only matters in so far as you give the RNG the most chances for positive outcomes.
In beta I can understand but the first 3 expansions? Nah. Idk how you can say things like freeze mage and mill druid were "play larger guy."
It was precisely this logic that it became a UI nightmare.
For some reason this makes me think about Destiny 2 where I was sent to different story parts that I had no groundwork for, suddenly in a prison, suddenly on a moon etc. I was so confused to the point I stopped playing.
I never though HS of all games would turn in to one of those "What in the actual f--- am I looking at," games.
Legitimately, when Arthas starts talking, I thought it was Artanis. The voices of pre-Lich King Arthas and SC2 Artanis are basically the same, which is probably because Patrick Seitz voiced them both.
Hearthstone dunkview brought to you by day9
Day9 is like actually the most sane and down to earth person to ever exist 😂😂😂 you are spot on. Now, how do we go back to the good ol' times? 😅
I clipped the Easter explanation from the first vid and shared it around.
Very fun.
Never realized just how much the Hearthstone returning player experience is like the Destiny 2 returning player experience
This is fucking hilarious!
Gotta admit, I was just as confused as Sean when I logged in to the game to play the other day just to see how it was. Haven´t played for quite some years.
this is the funniest shit i've seen in a while
My god he was on form for this one
4:55 I went too meta, I thought the "wait a minute" was about finding a working pop-up box. lmao
Let’s gooooo day 9 we’re back baby !!!!!
You are so very clearly not in the loop lol.
I saw his thumbnails before and thought damn I remember HS wow its been so long maybe ill redownload it and not im gonna pretend that thought never happened lmao arthas jump scare
If Day9 started shout casting StarCraft Broodwar with Artosis and Tasteless this channel would pop off even harder than it always has.
“Got my missile launcher right here!” Hearthstone really missed a card opportunity
Blizzard really is brimming with creative confidence
I have never played this game but I can't stop laughing at the ridiculousness of what is going on
Lmao best video of blizzard month right here for sure 😂
I had a really similar experience when coming back, I actually shut the game down three separate times after getting annoyed with the popups and each time there were more until I just clicked through them all. They've completely divorced the original HS experience and married some gacha game.
I lasted till 1:45, thanks Day9!!
"Words are concatenations of letters that form meaning" ~Day9TV
Day9 is so good these videos have almost made me want to return to Hearthstone
Almost…
This is me playing any mmo or mobile game that is more than a year old. Menus are scary man
I love your highlights
And man, the deterioraiton of HS's UI is sad as fuck. I remember this being by far the the most approachable game.
What a perfect demonstration of assumed knowledge mixed with poor ui design. This is such a great video.
I cried the whole time 🤣😂
I wonder how many people at Blizzard were facepalming at Hearthstone designers and managers after this.
big There Is No Game energy
