I was there at the Royal Albert Hall when this was filmed at the ARMS/Prince's Trust gig. It wasn't the Stones though just Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts among the other musicians. It was 1983, and I've got it on VHS somewhere :-)
Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Mark Knoffler, Jeff Beck, Bill Wyman of the 'Stones', on bass, Charlie Watts on drums! More star power on this stage then you can imagine! Man, would I have liked to be at that concert! Thanks for this post!
This is the kind of magic of whoever not had the chance to live in the 70's missed ! this is magical music ! pure insipration from some of the greatest musicians to have ever graced the world !! hats off , hands down and hail them ~!!~
Seen lots of mention of Charlie Watts, but no one's mentioned Bill Wyman, the Stones bass guitarist. What an awesome assembledge of Rock Giants. Thanks for posting!
This reminds me of the era of "My guitar can play louder than your guitar".. haha . In the second part of the song it is so rowdy Phil Collins is playing the gong at full arm, a recording engineer's nightmare, not that the entire thing is not distorted from the git go. Even the guitar players are rolling their eyes looking back stage at him banging the Chinese gong till it finally actually breaks . Applause comes like some kind of relief from the guitar stage left. "Whew ,it's over.."
Today August 13, 2009, A day we morn the passing of guitar legend, Les Paul, he was 94 The man who influnced every guitarists (and musician) in this video. Les Paul was an inovative genius with an "axe". A man who drew out the many inovative talents and abilities of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Mark Knopfler and most of all Jeff Beck, the most inovative guitarist of this generation. A moment of silence for the man who gave rise to an era of so many talented musicians. Thanks Les, we'll miss you.
Jimmy Page stands out...the greatest guitar player ever & two of the top (5) on stage with him in Clapton & Jeff Beck. Bill Wyman looks like George Harrison's brother.
Of all the crazy clothing musicians wear, a dozen of the best here ripping it in spiffy suits and what have you. Classy and talented, Clapton always just oozed coolness.
Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts playing Layla along with other greats like ERIC CLAPTON, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Kenney Jones, pure masters on the same stage.
Enjoy a musical show with so many icons of the music must have been an unforgettable experience for attendees! I wish to continue delighting us with this kind of event, although many only possible to see them through this medium! or in a DVD!
The guy by Erics side is Andy Fairweather-low from 60's group 'Amen Corner' ! The guy on the gong is Ginger Baker ! founder member of 'Cream' with Eric and Jack Bruce !
Quite simply the greatest collection of musicians to come together on one stage that I've ever witnessed- especially guitarists. 2 questions- is that a very young Mark Knofler (of Dire Straights) playing up front to the left of Clapton? and is that Bill Wyman or George Harrison to the right of Clapton? Incredible, and a great song to boot.
MITICA....MIO PADRE MI HA LASCIATO TUTTI I DISCHI DI ERIC....LI TENGO COME L'ORO....BELLISSIMA LAYLA....MI RICORDA PINO SILVESTRE...LA PUBBLICITA...MHUHAHHHAA:-) !!!
Looks like Chris Stainton on piano (a regular in Clapton's touring band). Ray Cooper (as already mentioned, and a former Elton John band regular) on the gong and tambourine. A brilliant version.
Wow! what else can you say. With all the posers out there now days. These guys played because they loved to play it had nothing to do w/ entertaining the mindless drones. Thank God for them, and the place they were when they made this powerful music.
@2307nike OK, "dude", I stand corrected. I watched several other videos and it is quite likely the man in question is FL and not MK. I was amazed at his resemblence on many videos to Knophler. It appears that FL has played on stage with Clapton on many occasions.
Yeah I was looking for the Stones too here, and all I saw was Charlie and Bill. That guitarist on the right in the white shirt looked a little like Keith, but the whole time I couldn't tell if it was or not. I don't think it was.
@Quasar342 Beck plays without a pick and constantly applies pressure to his whammy bar to make his guitar sing like that... Saw him last month in Montreal..crazy technique!
@narnode The bass player is Bill Wyman, formally, and at that time a member of the Rolling Stones. The guitar player is NOT Keith Richards but Jeff Beck.
All three Yardbird guitarists playing Layla. Priceless.
Playing it better than ever.
Not a single mention of the fact that all three guitarists for the Yardbirds are playing on this? I think that's the coolest part.
Keen observation 👍🏻

Spot on I used to work in a video rental shop back then and sold a few of this concert not sure but it may be on DVD now
The backbone of the Stones
Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Mark Knoffler, Jeff Beck, Bill Wyman of the 'Stones', on bass, Charlie Watts on drums! More star power on this stage then you can imagine! Man, would I have liked to be at that concert! Thanks for this post!
A bunch of old mates having a great time together. Oh yeah, and they were all playing their mate's song. How good was that!
This is the kind of magic of whoever not had the chance to live in the 70's missed ! this is magical music ! pure insipration from some of the greatest musicians to have ever graced the world !!
hats off , hands down and hail them ~!!~

Drunk as usual ..
Beck looks distant...that's probably being polite......
The Three Yardbird guitarists. Priceless!!!
what a nice song! best play.
5:27 Jimmy busts out a riff that makes Eric and Jeff look back at him and go, YO GO FOR IT. :D
Outstanding job by the gong man.
Nice to see Ray cooper going mad on percussion (again). What a man!
Jimmy Page is using the D-Bender Marvelously the sound is amazing!
This is great to see. Just feels like they're rushing through it. I love to savor this one.

Fantastic!
Of all the crazy clothing musicians wear, a dozen of the best here ripping it in spiffy suits and what have you. Classy and talented, Clapton always just oozed coolness.
i'm amazed that the stage doesn't collapse under the weight of all that talent
Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts playing Layla along with other greats like ERIC CLAPTON, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Kenney Jones, pure masters on the same stage.

so many great musicians! its like the expendables of 60's/70's/80's rock stars
I love the way Jimmy Page moves, when playing the guitar!
The guy by Erics side is Andy Fairweather-low from 60's group 'Amen Corner' !
The guy on the gong is Ginger Baker ! founder member of 'Cream' with Eric and Jack Bruce !
there guitar gods on one stage damn thats good
Ile razy tego słucham ciągle mało
Isn't Kenney Jones also playing drums along with Charlie Watts ?
Wish I could of been there!

@An0n3mu55 the double-neck was used for the lives...the solo in the studio was recorded with a 1959 fender telecaster

@fanof41
It was held in 1983 at Royal Albert Hall in London, and was a concert to raise money for Action for Research into Multiple Sclerosis.

Percussioist is Ray Cooper who played a lot with Elton John. Second drummer is Kenny Jones who played in the Small Faces/Faces and the Who.
Looks like Chris Stainton on piano (a regular in Clapton's touring band). Ray Cooper (as already mentioned, and a former Elton John band regular) on the gong and tambourine. A brilliant version.
ha That guy is rocken the shit out of the tambourine. I love how he goes from overly happy to "i'm gona stab somebody" look in about 3 seconds. lol
Oh man, would have loved to have been alive back then. The only band that comes close to the rock greats today, in my opinion, is the Foo Fighters.
@paulreeve That is indeed Andy Fairweather Low...was his first collaboration with EC...it;s the 1985 ARMS Concert.
Wow! what else can you say. With all the posers out there now days. These guys played because they loved to play it had nothing to do w/ entertaining the mindless drones. Thank God for them, and the place they were when they made this powerful music.

You weren't alive in 1985? Damn, now I feel old.
Jimmy page is the most awsome person in the world
Go Jimmy!!!!
Yeah I was looking for the Stones too here, and all I saw was Charlie and Bill. That guitarist on the right in the white shirt looked a little like Keith, but the whole time I couldn't tell if it was or not. I don't think it was.
Ooh god, I would give my feet to be at that concert
Certainly that's right, but that's nothing new! Still, love it!
@Quasar342 Beck plays without a pick and constantly applies pressure to his whammy bar to make his guitar sing like that... Saw him last month in Montreal..crazy technique!
@D4vy87 the drummer's name is charlie watts from a band called the rolling stones.
@narnode
The bass player is Bill Wyman, formally, and at that time a member of the Rolling Stones. The guitar player is NOT Keith Richards but Jeff Beck.
@An0n3mu55 Well, he played one in the Yardbirds, & the entire first Zepplin album was recorded on a tele into a tiny Supro brand amp.
first time ever, ive seen a gong at a concert.
