The intro to this is the most beautiful improvisation I've ever heard. His choice of notes and dynamics are genius, especially considering he's making that up on the spot.
Every other guitarist would have played the solos they recorded. But not Clapton - you get something new every time and every solo is brilliant. How many has he done over the years? That is the genius of Clapton.
Yes, i think so. I remember when i was a kid, my older brother whact always this concert of VHS. I was maybe 4-5, but i remember thinking that that guy got style and handsome. Very good that suit, i think still. I learned to play guitar. After 30+ years i've played many of Claptons songs myself. But when i was kid, i used to look up this guy, this is my hero. Still is.
I’m a huge fan of EC and this particular concert is one of my all time favourites. The band were tight and well suited to the songs. Not always the case with some of the “fussiness “ that crept in with later personnel. Also Tim Renwick gave EC a run for his money - EC admitted as much - so you have a highly talented guy being pushed to be “one better”. No criticism just a fans reflection and opinion. Thanks for the music Eric
What an amazing performance!! Clapton 's finger work on his guitar was stupendous! One of the best jams ever..loved every minute of it!! Hats off to u Clapton!!
I just found out this performance was at the Civic Center in Hartford CT, my own home state! I always, when watching this performance, envisioned it as taking place somewhere far away, exotic place. I never knew it was so close to home...
There it is! This is the version I heard way back when and then when the "unplugged" version came out I couldn't find this one anymore. I love them both, but this was the first.
This is one of my favorite videos. He just smiles throughout this performance like he is just lovin it and at the end he is so pleased with how this song goes (even though he misses a note @ about 4:11) he looks like a little kid.
For me the original Blackie Stratocaster has the most beautiful electric guitar tone all throughout his career. It is very much like Peter Green's Les Paul, Ed King's "Sweet Home Alabama" strat & Dickey Bett's goldtop Les Paul. It sounds best relatively clean with just enough distortion to make it sustain notes.
This version is amazing. Looks like the song's pace got a little slower with time, in more recent versions I mean. I think I prefer it slower but the way all instruments match in this version and the solos he makes are breathtaking.
@@pabloperez4063 I always stayed in Spain every summer. My late brother called to tell me Eric Clapton was on tour in England. I couldn't go because my family was there on Holiday. I wanted to escape to go see Eric Clapton. I was stuck in Spain and was so pissed because I couldn't go see him! I wasn't friendly either
This is the Clapton that I know and love. Not the man in his dotage who lets others play his shit. He's too generous nowadays. I know he's got nothing left to prove, but when I go to see Clapton I want to see "God", and nothing less. He set the bar himself and I'm holding him to it. For both our souls. Let it Rain I think may be his finest hour. I wish you could have heard it in the early 70's, it made a statement.
Thanks for uploading this nearly flawless version. The best of all of them, in my opinion. This one's going straight to flvto, then to itunes, where I'll do a little editing, then right to my ipod. Thanks again.
Eric Clapton commented on the difficulty of Layla, "'Layla' is a difficult one, because it's a difficult song to perform live. You have to have a good complement of musicians to get all of the ingredients going, but when you've got that. ... It's difficult to do as a quartet, for instance, because there are some parts you have to play and sing completely opposing lines, which is almost impossible to do....."
Very FEW people in the Planet could SING this song (not mention playing guitar as well) ThE pitch IS súper high, ThE lines are long, and against eachother... Eric IS one of ThE BEST singers in rock-pop-blues etc ever.

Simply genius
Lol listen to the Grateful Dead from 69-73 or Phish from 94-97
That’s a great comment. If you guys know anything about music theory, or play the guitar, you’ll know it’s in the key of ‘woman trouble’
Love how every version of this song differs from the others...that is why it never gets old.
Layla ❤️🤗
THAT is Eric.
That intro... Goose bumps....
Was this part of a commercial one time? Maybe for a car? Does anyone know or remember?

LEGEND! 🌠
He's always been my favorite guitar musician since his days in Cream.
Richard L my personal choice would always be Mark Knopfler but EC is in top 4! Along with David Gilmour and Pat Metheny
Mine too! Forever! Love EC
You can find out obout bluesbreakers
One of the greatest songs ever....Jeff Pocaro on drums is in the pocket all night.
That's Jamie Oldaker, not Jeff Porcaro.
This is my favorite performance of this song above all of his others.
N Kimball same here!!!!!!
N Kimball the one at Wembley was better. They deleted it. It had phil collins on drums.

Best live version of this song in my opinion...When i listen to this i have to turn it up as loud as i can.
all of the content of this live album are the best version esp. cocaine, let it rain/badge
Greatest rock-'n'-roll song ever written!! The 'riff' of this song is played in the movie "Goodfellas".

You're right! I've never seen this video before.
It’s 2019 and Clapton is still God. And YES he is so hot here!
He's sober and clean of drugs here. This isn't long after his first stint in rehab.
He was already a bit healthier here. But still a raging alcohol. Hardly able to make any concert alive.
Incredible opening rif; always gives me the chills.
Bought this on vhs back in the 80s. Eric is the master.
first i heard it on cassette tapes then when i was in florida as cruiseship f&b waiter i rented the vhs tape on the video shop and recorded it..

I personally think Layla is the best song ever written.
Calgary got our first FM station in 1977-FM 92. This is their first song on air. Damn fine choice
Bloody hell fine choice. My No.1 love song forever.
Posiblemente la mejor versión de Layla. El final es sensacional
It's taken me most of my life to fully appreciate Eric Clapton.

The greatest fucking guitar solo ever hands-down by the greatest guitarist of all time !! The legend Eric Clapton !!!!!
정말 전설은 아무나 되는게 아니다.
You can tell the tempo is much faster here than in later versions. His voice is crystal clear. Hey, but he’s awesome no matter! We all age😉
The sexiest and most passionate man I have ever seen.
He IS going to read It !
No argument here! He is the best!
