I bought a Savage She-Hulk 1 CGC 9.6 Newsstand for $425, I thought I had a great steal because I thought the show would take off and I would be holding a grail. We all saw how that went, so now I'm basically holding a rock.
Hahaha - a shiny rock though!
@@MintHunterComics It's still her first appearance in a respectable grade. I overpaid for sure, but it may turn into trade bait for a future key.
Those were always considered crap in the hobby for more than three decades. You couldn't give those books away. But now, we got movies to hype these crap books up. 🤣
I recently don’t mind because I believe it’ll probably go down to 300 or so for a 9.8. I sold mine for 575 but I look on eBay now and they’re dropping to just above 500
Ethan, appreciate your story a lot. Your candor is enlightening. Perhaps, you should buy more She-Hulk now. (?) Thx for sharing.
Your recent videos have been creative and uniquely interesting. I appreciate your solid efforts in making high quality videos. Other you-tubers should take note.
This type of stuff is when my relative lack of big $$ to "speculate" in comics has kept me from making horrible mistakes.
You’re killing it with these videos man!!!
Keep up the good work!
I'd be very careful investing in moden comics, even when compared to 2020 prices. So many collectors have submitted these books over the past 2 years that supply is exceeding demand. Ultimate Fallout 4 had approx 2500 9.8 copies in January 2021. Today, there are over 4000 9.8s, and I expect even more in the next 6 months.
Yup stuff like that is why I stay in the 1985 and earlier land right now
UF4 has a zillion books out there and still so many to be graded.
I payed $160 for my ASM 361 CGC 9.6 back in 2020 and in 2021 I cracked it open quick clean and press for the Mark Bagley signing and it came home a 9.8! Sadly it took so long to get the book back it went from $1500 peak to about $500... still happy regardless 👍
I had a similar situation with Special Marvel Edition 16, second appearance of Shang Chi. By the time I got it signed by Jim Starlin and Al Milgrom, CGC was at its slowest. I got that book months after that movie released and now I’m still struggling to sell it.
And I was gonna use the money that it would have sold for a raw copy of Special Marvel Edition 15.
I honestly haven't taken any huge hits.... recently. Back when I was collecting in the early 90's I was buying up all the hot flavor of the week books at their peak. Come see my Valiant collection sometime 🤣. The longevity of being active in the hobby as long as I have has taught me the most important thing... patience. Let the n00bs chase their hot keys and pay their premium, I'll buy the same book a year or two later when all the hype has died down... and if the book doesn't drop, I don't buy it, and I'm fine with that. I don't need to "collect them all". My tendencies over the past 5 years or so has just been collecting what I like for whatever reason, with "spec" not being the driving force, and I've been much more happy with my decision making ever since.
Just Went to a comic con and was pleasantly surprised what $300 was able to get me in December 2022 compared to what the same Con got me last December . I was late to this key collecting game and i must say, The collecting market is fun again. Getting all of my favorite character’s first appearances without breaking the bank feels amazing . :)
I think Killing Joke may have dropped on the heels of the Batgirl movie getting shelved. Maybe people thought he would appear or would have story notes from the killing joke depending on the Batgirl we got. So the trend I'm seeing is if youre going to sell sell after the trailer the books seem to be at their highest then and if youre going to buy buy after the release.
Ha, my most brutal book that im pissed about chasing is Marvel Premiere 10, with strange and shuma-gorath. I went crazy for that book, i spent a lot of money on one copy and as soon as i pulled it out of the bag the top right corner just fell right off! I ordered another copy, that one was shit, so i gave up. I’ll find one later when interest rates come down. Great vid!
Sam from Canada 🇨🇦
Most expensive comics I purchased in 2021 were Catwoman 51 (NM-) for $105 and Watchmen #1 (NM) for 100 Euros. I don't feel too bad about those 2 purchases because I don't buy hype, I buy what I like. I'm old enough to remember the comic speculation bust of the 90's.
comic books make poor investments for many reasons, but it is even worse when you compound it with the manufactured scarcity created by CGC census.
I would love to see an updated cold keys using average recent sales not a single low sale issue, cold keys are my favorite comic book content on UA-cam.
Getting back into collecting (and closing in on 3k) I don’t really go for investment or to flip books I more go for characters, stories, or art work. I do buy the odd keys but will only spend so much and no more. I do have a couple on your list (ASM 300 and Thundercats 1) but probably bought those off the news stand.
Got an X-men 94 cgc 8.0 for 1200$…book I’ve wanted since childhood and will never regret it….buy what you love
@@stevenloube6784 just too much money these days. Giant size X-men would be double or triple that price for a decent grade. That and hulk 181 are just way beyond what I’m willing to pay…94 though while at the very top end of my budget is still a book that can be had right now. 5-10 more years and it will be out of reach too.
I made a few blunders navigating the graded comic market when I got back into collecting last year but nothing as catastrophic as the examples in your video. And I can happily say that I paid $62 for for a 9.8 Young Avengers 10 last month.
Damn. Did you have to do Uncle Ben like that 😂
Lololol
I had bought an ultimate fallout 4 first print for 700 raw (at the time that was a steal) and it was perfect grade, but got damaged and came back a 9.4, and the book went way down so I’m stuck either selling for a loss or hoping it raises a little with the new movie coming out
I got the 2nd print at 9.6 for $230. I just liked that you could see his face...lol
I hope you do a follow-up when the comic market picks up whenever that is...
The hat was a nice touch
I bought an Ironfist 14 CGC 7.5 for about. $650 first Sabertooth in 2021. That book is down $150 or so.
Some sellers on EBay still has their prices on the high end for a lot of these books. Though I have seen a few that are at the lower price. I’m guessing they’ll slowly lower them or put them “on sale”.
Made little to no purchases at all during covid. All these books that are tanking are still well above what I paid for them 5 years ago. Looking forward to picking up more keys when the market further corrects itself
Fell into a trap but recovered on another. I purchased a Kanan #6 in a 9.8 for $620. It now goes for $300. However I purchased a Darth Maul #2 9.8 for $45 (I liked the cover). Sold it for $800. This was literally 2 nights before the episode aired that had Cad Bane killed off. Glad I made sure I specified "No Refunds" on my auction
We all take risks. Its the name of the game.
Asm 101 for me. bought a 6.0 copy for $500.. bad move to say the least
I almost bought Young Avengers 1 at my LCS, it was on the back shelf with the good stuff for like $900. They def tried to talk me into it, glad I didn't. Found a copy a few weeks later in a box I hadn't sorted 😅
Wait, that's the price they trying to sell to you RAW?!?
If they want a raw copy for 900 don't go to that store anymore lol
@@MintHunterComics that is common practice in some of these shops. We have 2 in our area that do this on a regular basis. I love when people find these books in back bins for pennies on the dollar🤣
no no no that was for the 9.8 . This was around the time of the wandavision show height . Even then I didn't think it was worth that much . But I have seen local shops listing raw books for the cost of what it might be graded using that as justification .
I’d imagine that on whatnot some of these comics have sold for more than the current sales you’ve presented in this video. Some crazy high prices people pay on whatnot; especially, the “mystery” items….I think a lot of people are getting ripped off.
People had a little more cash on hand and less inflation because of the government payouts post Covid. After living on Ramen for eight months and people going back to work they got spend crazy. Now we're seeing a correction to the hype of flash in the pan speculation books. I just picked up a Vision / Scarlet Witch V2 #12 9.2 for 50.00 - not a bad price for a mini key. For now I'm on the hunt for raw Silver and Early Bronze keys.
I was able to off load Vengeance for a profit. However, I paid waaay too much for upper mid grade raws for Marvel Point One & Young Avengers
I think the rule of thumb here is that everyone overpaid the last two years and everything due to the market drop and people having no money for comics is down 35% +
I paid 10 bucks for venom 3 the week it came out so I'm still good on that paid 125 for a 6.5 signed asm 300 by the Todd father so I'm good on that as always great video love the content
The problem with key issues that are speculated on due to film/television projects is that Marvel is all but dead at this point. They went the Star Wars route and started shoveling out subpar media at an alarming rate, and everyone is just done. You could say, for example, that Amodeus Cho will be the new Hulk in an upcoming movie, and you may see a minor blip in his first appearance issue for a couple of weeks, but as soon as the movie fizzles (like all the Marvel projects have done post-Endgame) those spec purchases end up on eBay for 1/5 of what the buyer originally paid. This isn't 2013 anymore; movie specs are a losing bet.
You mean the Disney route
You know what's not dropping 75% or more? Gold and silver age. It ain't rocket science people.
Thank you very much for your Insight and information on comic books man. I appreciate it very much thanks again.
I'm happy I didn't fall for any traps. Mind you I did over pay for some stuff. Sometimes you just have been searching too long and you finally find it. Thankfully not many by too much. Plus I only buy raw. Feel bad for those that have fell for the escalated FOMO thanks to "spec".
Strange though it may be to say, I m glad you got layed off. I m happy yo see more videos and where your creativity is taking you! Good luck man!
Thanks I think? haha
It shows more what ridiculous prices some people were willing to pay for these issues and don't know what they are truly worth. The prices never should have gone that high, I guess some people have way too much money to burn.
The reality of the generally high print run on these titles is finally becoming apparent. The drops will continue for most of these titles because there are still tens of thousands of raw potential 9.8's of most of these titles that are yet to be graded. The market obsession with modern/current comics comes with consequences. Jane Foster Thor is a prime example of an over-hyped comic that had a huge print run. Factor in an awful movie and boom. Drop. I also notice that sellers are selling raw high grade copies of these titles for not that much less than these current CGC graded copies! There are lessons to be learned from all of this that go beyond the standard "Seller's Market/Buyer's market" dichotomy. My primary takeaway is to focus on the print runs. McFarlane Spider-man is a good example. Huge print runs in the hundreds of thousands per issue and only a small percentage has been CGC graded. There are literally tens of thousands of high grade copies (yet to be graded) in thousands of private collections. If all one does is look at the CGC census they are only seeing a small part of the overall market picture. McFarlane Spider-man will continue to drop as the numbers of CGC graded McFarlane copies continue to be graded. The numbers are increasing at a larger rate than the # of new speculators entering the market. Great time to buy.
A big one for me is Magazine keys. They take damn near a year for turnaround and are scarce at high grade. Just picked up Resident evil 1 the magazine one by since the print is tiny and only 3 on the census in 9.8 with none on ebay lol
Man I’m about to go shopping after Xmas!
My worst buy was in here. I bought a 9.6 purple 3rd print of the Jane Foster Thot #1 for about $200. I'll never buy a graded book based on spec again. lol
I sold (Marvel) high after owning them at much lower original purchase prices. I didn’t buy anything high. The market was good to me. 🙏
Tmnt #2 is the first appearance of April O’Neil, Baxter stockman, and the mousers.
Great video
Keep it up man! I've only been collecting a couple years now but did some research before I jumped in....glad I did...I'm still enjoying the hobby and these price drops...you're my go to guy for comic content...love all the videos man
Comic Books are a patient game. Sometimes it's more important than the need. I am at my stage right now where I am just a cover price or variant price at top$30 range. Gotta love it 😀
FUN LIST! Thanks for collecting these. I own many of these in my PC, not CGC’d, but I guess I should hav3 sold them???
I bought a minty raw copy of 361 silver cover for 50 bucks. Obviously not the same value as the 1st print but still super cheap
I was able to get 3 copies of the 1 in 25 Captain Carter and resell them within a week at over $100 and kept one for my PC. Kinda got screwed out of being able to sell my graded copy of Marvel Special Edition 16 because of CGC screwing the pooch on hiring graders I’m 2021.
I'm not really spending significant $$ on anything as an "investment" or spec so don't know that I have anything I really regret. I do have a couple of things I spent about $120-150 on (each) recently though that I probably could have gotten cheaper had I waited - Planet Comics 1 (Dave Stevens) and Funny Aminals 1 (1st print - 1st prototype of Maus by Art Spiegelman). Both raw, I'd say conservatively 9.4 for each - they look pretty flawless. These are for the personal collection for now but while specialized for sure, I think both will always have some value, and may prove to be good investments - someday. Not rocks, anyway.
Of the books you spotlight I have the two TMNT, X-Factor and Micronauts - but I bought them all new at cover so I'm not really losing sleep over the declining values yet.
This all just goes to show that short-term spec is gambling, pure and simple. Shooting craps. Not many people can make a living doing that.
You're not going to see big drop offs for DC because they don't jump up much
This is why I don’t buy modern books for investment purposes. The only book I bought for investment was the first red hulk in the last year
I have some Eternals 1s and those Thor keys in 9.8s. Ouch. Also a Star Wars 42 in a 9.8.
Love the coldest comics update brrrrre 🥶 I’m looking to scoop up Young Avengers 1 at a lower price. I also got Thor 337 which is a grail for me at $90 raw amazing (down from like $190). I got into comics during 2021 for the first time so all I’m seeing is flash sale!
Never, ever, never buy non-key books based on a show or film. They always drop back to the abyss.
I recently bought a Young Avengers 9.8 10 for $65. Seems like a good value if/when the team eventually gets assembled for the MCU.
James, great video and you should do more cold key video's. I still wanna see your top 20 big key books you have cause I know you got some killer books. I am still on the hunt for my grail books,AMS#129,TMNT#1, Cerebus#1, Detective Comics #168,and Hulk#181 and I am afraid they will stay on my list for along time cause I don't have $1,00's to sink into a book although I do believe these books will hold there value.
Loved this vid, keep'em coming👍
Sux to see the Kamala and America books Taking a hit but I bought low and am still way ahead
Whoa! Brutal. I took a little hit with my 1st Batgirl/Barbara Gordon after the movie exploded into oblivion. Hope to see Babs done right in the future. Good time to pick up some keys. Thanks for sharing! 🙌
I think a lot of people got hit with that one!
BEING AN OLD TIME DEALER I REMBER THEY OVER SHIPPED SPIDERMAN 3OO , G.I. JOE 1 THEY WENT BACK AND REPRINTED. AGAIN THE KILLING JOKER HAD A HIGH PRINT RUN COULD REORDER. SOME OF THE THE DEALERS ARE DUMPING THERE OLD STOCK. THIS CAME BECAUSE DIAMOND MISSED SO MANY TIMES TO HELP THE DEALERS.TO MANY PEOPLE THINK MOVIES WILL JACK THE PRICES.
That's crazy, my goodness. I think the speculation on Micronauts #1 was a reference to Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania MCU film, however watched a separate video about 2 months ago as i learned that Marvel Studios doesn't have the rights to Micronauts because of the rights to the characters and names by another publisher.
Nice review.
Marvel owns the rights to any of the characters created during the comic series run. Hasbro owns the rights to the characters based of off the licensed toys.
Daredevil 9 - killed me!
Im still feel the burn from Thor God of Thunder 2. I had hoped for much more from the film and it’s adaptation of Gorr. Oh well still a good book to have in my collection
I am so glad I didn't pull the trigger on a Star Wars 42 I was looking at before the Boba Fett show came out. I'd still like a copy, but also the show really screwed up the character, so I don't want one half as much as I used to...
I really feel most marvel books after 1980 are really overpriced. I tend to not buy books that have more than 50 CGC 9.8s or you will see slow growth in all other grades. It blows my mind that so many marvel books produced in the last 20 years sell for more than a first swamp thing.
The modern marvel characters make sense. People are jumping from that sinking ship fast right now. Those characters are not matured enough or even liked enough to retain those kinds of values. TMNT however....those books are so rare. U hardly ever see them, and in high grade it's even harder to find them. Crazy. Great video sir.
Love the video man! Would love to see a video of your opinion on these sellers who are still holding onto these books that are falling, and trying to sell them for those summer 2021 highs, when they’re clearly gone.
Never expect a seller to be realize or recognize their stuff is worthless. They still quote mid 2021. Let them continue to hold, those books will never rise again. Buy from someone else. Let those dopes starve.
Always comes down to one thing for me, if i love it, it doesn't matter what its worth, or what i paid for it, it ain't going nowhere.
Great video hope to be able to afford a 9.6 Spidey 300 soon. Comic link has them consistently for $900 which is what I sold my 8.5 for
Those high drop offs sure gave you a chill. No wonder you're wearing your winter gear. 😆
Awesome video. I just locked in a 9.8 Killing Joke for $177 thanks to your tip. If you ever travel to the south, give me a shout. I believe I owe ya a beer.
WOW! never thought I'd see that price
I sold off a lot of stuff during the price boom and I'm still waiting on some books to come back down to Earth so I can re-buy at a cheaper rate. Most stuff has done so but not all of it, and I wish I still had my FF49, ASM 238, Batman Harley Quinn, etc.
Nice One , I like the ice water effect lol
Thank you! Cheers!
@@MintHunterComics I like the ice water effect but not on the ones I have 😒😒😒😒😦😦😧😧🥺🥺🥺🥺😂😂😂😂
Good vid...some of those books are still good pick ups (at current price)...Killing Joke, TMNT's...they like your slow growth stocks.
I was at an antique store and they were trying to sell a raw copy of ASM 365 for 80 bucks lol
Hell no hahahaha
I have a 9.9 Batman One Bad Day Riddler #1 comic . I dont see many of that comic sold on ebay to begin with , also an Ultimate Spiderman Miles Morales 2011 9.8 signed by bendis oh yeah and a 9.9 Spider-Gennon #0 and Hip Hop variant Nas Illmatic Variant cover Miles Morales 9.8 signed by Shameik Moore , any feedback would be great TY Mint Hunter and anyone that can help
I love buying comics after they drop!
I've only been back into Comics after 30 years or so for about 3 months. I'm just buying comics and I like and ones that I know are keys and that I might want to get graded myself.
Everything is starting to settle, housing, cars, stocks, so why not comics as well
I bought a CGC 9.8 of Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 3 Issue #4 (first appearance of Silk) for $325 on Dec 31st, 2021. I think it’s going for around $225 now, BUT after watching this video it could’ve been ALOT worse. WOW!!! 😱
Great video!! Hope full time works out for you!! It means more videos for us. Hellblazer 1 9.6 for $120. FMV was $260. Right now, FMV is $130
Fingers crossed!
Great video!!
I need to start getting some of my books graded so I can take advantage of crazy prices when the come. I spent over $200 on a raw copy of Captain America 25, the first appearance of Sam Wilson as Cap.
I have the first appearance of the falcon from early '70s In fine grade.
The most i ever payed for a book is $80.00 for Mystery in Space issue 90 about 30 years ago.
I sold a Space Wars 1 , 1950s Ditko in high grade for 200.00 about 30 years ago.
Try finding these books in high grade.
Thor God of Thunder 2 is part of an all time classic story, so I really wonder where it will end up pricewise in a few years. Gorr is not coming back in the MCU, but I think he will stick around over the long term, in animation, videos games maybe
Lol, I got hit with the Venom 3 craze. I did not pay the record, but I did pay $360 with tax and shipping included in that price. Crazy lol
Invested in many Thor 1’s
I bought an ASM #300 raw that looked perfect, got a CGC 9.8 out of it, sold it for about a 2K profit. Great, except had I waited until the craziness, it would have been more like a 5K profit. I'm obviously still happy, but it's another example of the crazy market; as popular as both Venom and Spider-Man are, and I'm huge on both, there is no reason that book should be above $3000 for a 9.8. There are so many out there, and there are so many that were purchased when it came out, never read, stored forever, and remain in high grade. Just be patient, and eventually you get one in a collection, or find one on Marketplace or whatever for $300 for a high grade raw.
I see so many of these 90s boom era stuff and literally millions were printed. How did they get so high to begin with? Remember, millions were printed during the 90s boom. There is no rarity on most of these. I would say the turtles stuff had smaller press runs but the rest? Millions!
Love the hat!!!
I definitely agree with those choices my key that I got it was a gift but still it was west coast avengers 45 it's starting to pick up again but not as much as before
2021 people were spending those stimulus checks !
Well we have something in common now bud. I was just downsized and lost my job also.
My LCS store owner convinced me to buy the Venom #3 9.8 first Knull for $435 it was one of my first slabs ever like first 5 and now I see you can buy a graded book the same grade for like $130-$150 less then what I payed
Haha we won’t make fun of you! Funny I died laughing
Picked up a bunch of ASM 365 but didn’t sell when at the high. Now I’m gonna lose money.
I am one of those who bought the Young Avengers #1 near the high. I can see myself holding on for many years.
Oh no!
Lucky for me I bought Batman #108 for cover price!
Whilst prices are correcting, most of these were amplified drops due more to failed TV series/movie appearances and thus cooling off on spec.
Batman 108 is truly quite a shock. More shocking? someone has a CGC 9.8 for $5,500 US. ROFL.
Thanks for the incredible job you did here by the way
Almost seems like overcorrection in some of these books. Keys are still keys, ( granted some of these books are very minor keys at best) but, this makes it a good time to be a buyer.
It absolutely is market correction. But some books for sure went down "too far"
