I just googled the dead #2 cover and wow can't believe that was even a cover back then
CRAZY.
I can't seem to find it. What's on the cover? The only two images I found where censored too .
@@brianjohnson4082 Well, its a very graphic up close picture of a zombie’s mouth with a woman’s bloody privates being chewed between his teeth while a lady lays naked on a bed in the background, legs splayed open. If you type The Dead #2 comic into google and check images it should be the 3rd picture down.
there are more than a few from that series that are very dark. what is fascinating to me is the fact that someone took all that time to draw. it's one thing to glance or even read a book like that. but doing the art is very time consuming. a very dark pass-time.
It was an alternate "Adults Only" cover, which a relatively common sales practice from underground comics publishers back in the day. The Dead #1 (only two issues of Volume 1 was published) also has an alternate adult cover which is equally graphic.
Wait so women can say they dont need a man but men cant say they are better off without a woman? Lol
I love the “viewer discretion advised” lmao
Can't be too careful these days haha
You did a great job on this video! When I saw the length as 29 minutes, I thought there is no way I’ll watch the whole thing. But guess what, I did and it was a lot of fun! 👍🏼☺️
Haha I got ya! Glad you enjoyed my friend
I had the Hansi comic when I was a kid. I think I got it from a church. It depicted a mass rape of German female prisoners by Soviet soldiers.
dead 2 yikes *casually deletes search history*
hahahahaha
I regret googling The Dead issue #2 cover. Things you can't unsee 😮
Hahaha HOW DID THAT GET PAST EDITING?!??!
Dude, great video! One of your best yet. You’re getting good ad polishing the vids and making them more entertaining. Cheers! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Holy smokes! Made the bad choice to look up The Dead #2 and well...
Great vid, by the way.
Damn, imagine there being controversy over superman wanting to protect the world not just 1 country. thats patriotism gone wrong.
Good video though!
Some of these are surprising that they were so controversial. That shouldn't have raised any brows but everyone got butthurt about it!
Damn, imagine being an artist and being told you're not allowed to have any artistic freedom
Too many pussies in this world lately
Great video James, it was real fun to watch! A new comic that comes to mind is the cover of Good Asian 8, not released at the time your video was made though.
Thanks for the info!
Just found your channel today and watched a ton of your vids. Keep them coming, brotha!! 🤓
Ayyyy welcome to the family brother! Glad to have you join. Nice username lol
Some of the Spawn comics could have made this list. What Spawn did to Billy Kincaid comes to mind.
Mmm a worthy entry indeed
What a great job man, I just find your channel and I´m glad I did.
Welcome aboard!
I like your topic's on comics. I got into comics back in early March. Great content.
Welcome to the comic family my dude! And I appreciate the kind words
- The first one is the hand is in the extreme foreground. The mistake isn't the hand but the placement of the tombstone. You could see it as the zombie is coming out of another grave in our foreground view. Nothing controversial but staging is 'off'. They probably thought the large hand and the whole look would stand out on the shelf like a classic horror comic from the '50s at that time.
- Oh 'cmon, what rape vibe on the Supergirl cover? Nothing wrong with that cover. Jeez. She's being dragged along by the villain to the wedding, NOT the bed chamber.
- EVS My Struggle, you don't get the satire? It's when people were criticizing EVS so he trolled them with his sketchbook. He printed these himself.
- Nothing wrong with the X-Static cover. Oh boy.
- Superman's book was just a dumb writer's take.
- Lobo's cover looks GREAT. Gotta' track that down.
- Great Neal drug cover and interiors.
- The Archie cover is the ONLY one I'd see as controversial because Archie is and always was marketed for kids. Once they did this and the lgbt stuff, they ruined a wholesome franchise.
- Tony Stark with the alcoholism definitely is a great read. I read it as a kid and it did make you think of the consequences.
- Minara's Spider-Woman cover you got ALL wrong. Minara is a master illustrator. Master of anatomy. People who weren't good with anatomy thought it was drawn wrong, but it wasn't. The anatomy is correct and the prude's in the industry thought it was 'sexist'? What? Have you seen how superhero women have been drawn for over 80 years in comics on covers, interiors, etc. Power Girl has a window to show her tits from day one. LOL. And for the arse, it's another satire like how Spidey has the same pose for a male, with the costume riding up his own ass. Just look up those poses up. Oh boy.
That dead #2 variant cover is crazy as hell
Had to look up The Dead #2 so far the one’s I’ve seen also picture greyed out. BTW your videos are well done. I also do videos and your topics and how well they look inspires me.
Keep looking you'll find it! It's disgusting haha, and thank you!
If you wanna find it you can use comic book realm. It’s pretty nasty though
I think the comments hyped it up too much. I don’t think dead #2 is that bad, really. Yes it’s gruesome and pretty nasty, but not something that needed banning. It’s a horror comic🤷♂️
Yooo, I been with with this channel for a long time. Love the content and the evolution of your content. Sorry to hear about your recent lay off but I can tell you are going in on this channel. Thanks Jacob! I greatly appreciate it!
Great video! Subscribed!!
Ayyy, welcome to the family Matt and thanks for being so cool!
What up, Mint Hunter. This is a very interesting look at the history of comics.
Ayyy thanks Ossie! This was a lot of fun )and shocking) to research and produce! haha
@@MintHunterComics
I had to share this one. Thanks for not just giving a top ten. Thanks
Great topic great list. Thanks for the vid.
Glad you enjoyed Ronnie!
Hi James, one year late but I've finally got to view this video. Love the subject! And there's plenty of room for a Part 2 (and 3). Interesting note: X-Statix #15 with the Princess Diana-looking character - I can only find images of this cover with her hair re-coloured darker and no tiara. Can't find any reference to the blonde version being recalled or the dark version being a second printing. Love to know the full story of this one. Regarding the great Mark Gruenwald's ashes being mixed with the ink for the Squadron Supreme Trade: blood from each member of Kiss was mixed with the ink to print Marvel Comics Super Special #1 (1977).
I think that's because it was fully blacklisted!
I was wondering if that Alf cover was going to be on here before watching, glad to see it 😂
You knew it! haha
the dead #2 cover is gross and horrible HOW did that get published??
Sigh who knows
How? Well for starters the author, illustrator and publisher all live in the United States of America and believe it or not we have something called the First Amendment which protects our right to free speech (which includes other things such as the right to publish, read and view what they wish, etc..) regardless of its subject matter.
Forgot the Punisher issues, where he undergoes a procedure to turn himself back and fights with Luke Cage in the inner city...this actually took place over several issues!!
I missed that! Wow, I guess I was trying focus mostly in single issues and covers
YOU WON THE 5,000 SUBSCRIBER GIVEAWAY DUDE! Message me to confirm the "Legends of The dark Knight" Entire run! congrats!
Cool video. Very well made
Thanks Rick! Cheers
this is a great video. i will be embedding this one on my website. it's a keeper.
Please do!
@@MintHunterComics you're the first on the new blog section: hi-octanecomics.ca/top-100-most-controversial-comics-in-history/
Loved this video had to laugh at some of those covers own a couple of them.
Thanks Sean!
Amazing informative video!!!
Excellent research and video! But you definitely missed the 1970 Kazar #1 with Daredevil and X-men by Herb Trimpe. His great cover has the word F--K clearly hidden in the blades of grass. lol
Ahhhh Kazar 1!!
5:02, totally not invoking the iconic photo of RFK's assassination.
One of the worst Supergirl covers is one showing her being terrified of a mouse. It turns out she was having a dream, but the cover remains one of her most demeaning moments.
Awesome video, I recall some controversy with Kevin Smith catching a bunch of heat when Batman peed his pants in “The Widening Gyre” series he wrote.
I almost added that! I decided that was too stupid rather than controversial hahaha but that's a great one
HAHAHA I love that batman damned you said who needed this I might have needed it lmao! I love that it made it I actually have this in a CGC 10 :) im so happy it was my very first submission to cgc
Oh wow! That's a noice slab there my friend! Hahaha thanks for your support glad I could make you laugh
For your consideration: Mike Allred's GRAPHIQUE MUSIQUE #2 (Slave Labor Graphics, 1990). It's known as the "Decapitation Cover" issue, which raised many eyebrows and generated a degree of controversy at the time of its release. Of course, it's become tamer through the years, and could be overlooked when measured against current standards. But it certainly was flagged in its heyday.
Now that we're on the cusp of this video's anniversary, perhaps it's time for a sequel? Another controversial Hundred, assembled from new discoveries you've made with or without the input of commenters here. What do you think, James?
I happened to get a copy of Immortal Hulk #43 as I was getting all of the Marvel Vs Alien variant covers.
Ayyy! nice!
Great Video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Educational. Great research.
Thanks Bobby!
Last weekend I picked up Wolverine 131 and turned out to be the recalled version. Saw a few of the other books mentioned here, thinking about going back to grab them just for rarities sake.
Sweet!
What's so controversial about Captain America taking drugs. The whole character exists due to someone taking experimental drugs.
A seriouslyyyy valid question honestly lol
The whole outrage over Spider-Woman #1 is bloody f'n funny as heck!
Marvel knew exactly what they were getting when they hired Milo Manara famed Italian artist of books like Trip to Tullum (with Federico Fellini), Butterscotch Corto Maltese, and more 'erotic' comix.
Duuude, have you even taken the the time to ACTUALLY READ that Sensational She-Hulk 46????
If you did then you would have known that Bryne is dissing the then current trend of portraying women in comics as sexual objects...ANYONE with a 1/10th of a brain could have figured that out - buncha IGNORAMUSES!
Bryne (followed by Steve Gerber) had one of the most fun comic book series of the 1980's/1990's with Sensational Shulkie.
On the Wonder Woman 'bondage' tip, she was created by a dude heavily into B.D. & S. & M. (in addition to developing a 'lie detector' hence WW's lassos ability to compel one to tell the truth.
This list is the top 100 controversial comics, not what I think is controversial. So in the case of that she hulk, even though its making FUN of misogyny it was considered controversial for its portrayal nonetheless. People misunderstood the comic but nonetheless it was controversial. I'm reporting on comics that caused a lot of stink and ruffled feathers
good videos, i enjoy watching them.
Thanks so much!
After Googling The Dead, I saw some of the other covers, and I seem to remember seeing a few of these back then. Can't remember if it was a friend or family member who had them, but being a teenager in 93 when these came out, and being into horror movies and Heavy Metal magazine, I remember thinking they were hilarious. Now I'm cringing that this even got released. And I want a copy.
Also, you mention people's DNA being added to ink, and you forgot the big one, when KISS famously added vials of their blood to the red ink of the first printing of their first comic from Marvel. Maybe Marvel just has some issues. (pun not necessarily intended)
Ah yes you're right! also it's not comic but look up what the cover of Metallica's "Load" is a picture of behind the meaning
@@MintHunterComics Huge Metallica fan here! Still amused and grossed out by that.
Hansi, the girl who loved the Swastika?? Damn...
hahahaha I know right?
The publisher is Spire Christian Comics.
That action comics 457 came to mind while watching this list and I knew it had to be on here
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
top 100 "must have" comics IMO. 🙀 underground "comix" (Cocaine Comix, Cherry, Checkered Demon, etc.) are way more crazy than anything on this list but it does awesome job covering mainstream comics.
Thank you alot had me laughing the whole ride home
Glad you enjoyed!
This is a great list but I know of one that tops all of these. Frank Thorne’s Devil’s Angel from Eros comics in the 90s. A comic shop that sold it was accused of trafficking CP for carrying it but luckily because of the 1st amendment the case was thrown out. Frank Thorne made the final issue of the series an anti censorship comic because of the controversy
I had to do some googling on that one - quite the interesting story!
Great video
23:00 the Batawang - only one I could recall recently.
I still have a couple first editions, ive been thinking of sending them to CGC
@@MintHunterComics Might as well 🤷🏻♂️. I can also say it’s one of the most hyped items before launch that I’ve seen. Maybe second only to Thanos on throne SS statue. By the time I got home from work and to my local comic shop, there was literally only two issues left - basically sold out in hours.
Amazing that a lot of these even made it to print. Pretty blatant stuff. You gotta wonder where the editors were on this or how they kept their jobs. Lol!
some of these are tame but some it's like how'd this happen?
in europe these would be considered standard
It's all a matter of perception! the US thinks everything is off limits and taboo lol
What's funny is I just bought a copy of Detective Comics 371 and when I first saw the cover I was like really? That's what Batgirl is worried about right now haha
hahahahaha
What's also very cool about it, and the reason I bought itvin the first place is its the first appearance of the Adam West TV show version of the Batmobile in comics.
Wow, this must have taken ages to research!
It did, it really did! Haha
Fun video man. Love that you didn't forget ALF lmao!!! Check out Green Arrow vol.2 #17. Made a stink back in the day cuz of a splash page with a tortured and murdered stripper crucified like Jesus.
Ah yes! I honestly coukd have made this list 200 entries if I really wanted it seems haha
That’s some badddd timing with superman realised on the 12 of sep
Isn't that crazy? How does that happen
Awesome video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Some interesting stuff here. I like
Glad you enjoyed it!
There’s What if Volume 1, # 16. Marvel left it out of the omnibus because of the title. It’s on my hunt list and now you’ve added a couple more!
I googled the dead issue 2,holy crap that is just all kinds of wrong.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 HOW did that get made
I can't find the uncensored comic book cover of The Dead #2 Varient Cover. It just shows me The Walking Dead or it blurred out.
oh the cringes!!! I love how much work you put into each one!
Cringe express. It was fun to research but some of these are just too crazy
I found the Hansi at an antique store and read it. Not what the cover makes you think.
I had a feeling it would be quite different in the pages within
Good grief butt canyon. Wow, did not know about the Wolverine controversy. Ah the refrigerator. Alf!
I'm making butt canyon a new phrase
I can’t find the uncensored version of that The Dead book by jason Moore
Lol two seconds later I find it... Jesus how did they let him make that cover lol
That may be for the best!
I HAVE NO IDEA!
So... The Dead issue #2...
That was... That sure was something!
You can see why I couldn't show it! hahaha
Add "Red Room" to your list.....
Ah yes!
I'm just curious of what you think is a good value for a Rifleman #10 in a fair condition. I have the oppurtunity to get one for $299. I think that is to high.
Ok, someone needs to tell me: what's up with the Osbornes' hair? Are those supposed to be cornrows? Or are they just badly drawn wavy hair?
My favorite is Reform School Girl.
Ahhhh good one!
In my opinion that is the ultimate SOTI book.
Good show!
Faust 1-12 all prints. How about GIANT SIZED MAN-THING
I had to do some googling, wow
Some of these make sense and I get it... but others.... good lord what a reach.
I agree, its amazing what some consider controversial
Poor Archie. It must be hard work beating off three guys (in a row!). 😼
Lol
There was an issue of the Rampaging Hulk B&W mag by Jim Shooter where a couple of guys try to rape Bruce Banner in a shower at a gym - and he of course Hulks out
Wow - I didn't know that!
can't say I'm surprised about Van Sciver being on here multiple times.
Don't let your curiosity lead you to Dead#2, just trust the comments LoL
Not one of Avatar Press or Verotik Comics mentioned. "Hmm". Might be due to so low sales.
I just looked up, very interesting!
She hulk was not naked in the issue once the rope slowed she had clothes on
Spiderman did that spiderwoman pose first
Correct good eye! The spider woman's the one that was hyper exaggerated hence the notoriety for its ridiculousness!
What's interesting about The Amazing Spider-Man issues 96 through 98, is that if they would have had the comics code on them, they probably would just be another low value book, irrelevant to the overall Spider-Man universe. It's simply the fact that they don't have the comics code that prices are as high as they are for them.
Indeed
"the host is trying to be a newscaster."-🤔🖥🌐..
Hahaha who me? Lol
Rampaging Hulk # 23 and Justice League: Cry for Justice # 2 were the only major omission that pops to mind. You could make a case for Ghost Rider teaming up with Jesus or Hal Jordan sleeping with an underaged Arisia.
I missed those!
The only one I find offensive is that “The Dead” cover. The other are nothing to cringe about. It’s art
I somewhat agree - the "Dead" cover is the easy crazy one, but some of these I am like "what were they thinking?"
@@MintHunterComics yea you’re right. The editor, if there was an editor should not let some of them pass approval
Jeez I wanna look it up but I don’t want to look it up.
I had that alf comic as a kid never thought anything of it
You were innocent! us weird adults just had to ruin it haha
I would say Green Lantern#85 where Speedy shots up and that is also the issue that almost got DC comics banned according to Neal Adams in that documentary i watched.
That was in here!
Just started watching... Gonna like solely for the Eagles gear
Hell yeah my man!
Faust and grip from Mike vigil
Good choice
With the Native Americans, yes if you read history there were war tribes, tribes who dominated the more peaceful Native tribes etc. That should've have been controversial if people know history.
Yeah, I heard that they took Stan's blood tricking him into saying it was for his doctor to run a general physical on him. Do a blood test, etc.
It was when his wife passed so there was no one to protect this man. What shocks me as Stan is a multi millionaire he didn't have a big time agent or law office representing him. Very strange to me.
That Tomb of Terror cover great!
Sorry for the long posts. I learned alot and will seek out some of these books for my collection. Cheers!
I want that Rifleman 10 so bad.
Right?
green lantern vol 4 #57 regular cover
Brad Meltzer Justice League of America #15 (it's either 14/15/16 - can't remember), Ed Benes drew the issue - first double page spread.........
Loved the video but you actually missed the 1st time Kitty said the N word. That was in the Marvel Graphic Novel #5 “God Loves, Man Kills” (May 1982).
Also just to make you jealous, I bought that ALF #48 comic you want off the shelf of my LCS the day it came out back in 1991. I laughed from the moment I 1st saw it to just now when you mentioned it, lol.
Kitty's just so wild! Hahaha, what do you want for that Alf? Haha
@@MintHunterComics Sad to say not for sale. One day I will send it off to be graded then maybe lol.
X-Factor #39 Multiple Man absorbs his son.
Nice choice
I think the Hansi comic is a story against Nazism (not sure). The cover doesn't make it seem that way though.
I'd live to get my hands on it to read it
@@MintHunterComics Hansi was published by Spire Comics, A christian comic company. Thay did all the Archie christian books. They are all so cheesy...
What about the KISS comic made with their blood?
Wow, that Rifleman cover was bad. How that got printed Idk.
How dare Superman be attracted more to one appearance of Lois than another?!
Especially for the time period. -what were they thinking? lol
You left out the starwars nude variant
