I LOVE your pragmatic and inviting approach to Bonsai. No phony pomp or ceremony. Just grab your Hand Pruners and Enjoy! THAT.... is what it is all about. Thank YOU, Sir.

Having only a few trees makes it hard to wait three months to prune, but the health of the tree requires it. That wild look is making the trunk and branches swell. Thirty trees is just not enough, LOL . Thank you for another delightful video.

The tree that used to grow by the toilet 🤭 if I'm not mistaken....that sleepy hollow tree looking sure is thriving and looking great 👍. Thx for sharing Peter.

Good to see this tree again. The front looks like an old man's face like the apple trees from the Wizard of Oz.

Privets are indeed fast-growing. I have a 2m tall privet tree with a ~20-25 cm trunk and it grows these long shots so quickly that one pruning in June and one in late September are necessary. They are so vigorous that they strike me as the the perfect outdoor bonsai replacement for ficuses in regions with temperate climates.

I feel so chill watching you trim out in the yard.
Also, how fun to hear your cameraman laughing and enjoying his time too.

Privet is a weed tree except when they're pruned they become exceptional works of art. i trimmed a large privet probably 8 foot tall into a standard bonsai form. And then draped a climbing red rose on it. The beauty of the combination definitely puts you in the zone. I can understand a lot of people wanting to buy your privet Peter. That trunk is beyond phenomenal.

Here in the eastern mid-atlantic US, we have something very similar to your "privet". I believe they " Golden Ticket privet", but I'm not sure. Many call them "weed trees" that grow EVERYWHERE, and easily take over where they shoot from. Many here let them go and trim them into hedges, as I have as well. But they grow so vigorously, I could not keep up with them, and wound up chain sawing them down to around 2' high, and try to keep them trimmed. I have about 6 now, that are ancient, and have massive bases, and I now wonder, if I might dig one up and pot it to try as you have done. Inspiring Peter, thank you.

I have lots of privets collected from the area here in Nashville. Massive ones growing wild and invasive. 20-30 years old. Some of my favorite trees ever! Perfect for bonsai!
What is up with peters wife? Him galavanting around with popped collars and fancy hats and shorts. Haha love your style of bonsai, no bs just practical things

Thank you! Inspired me to address my little indoor privet. It grows really well on the kitchen window sill, but is currently in a state of growth and I have long sacrificial branches helping to thicken a few weedy branches.

Privet are very hardy and take take a lot, I have a few in my collection and use one mainly for experiments and it takes all that I have given it so far and just bounces back each time

Oh yes. I'm going to get a privet next to add to my bonsai collection. So far I have an acer campestre and a wisteria sinensus. Very difficult year for acers though, I know of no one who has avoided the leaf scorch this year.
I love the Scott's pine too. I have one due at arrive eventually (grower is a family member, so they can take their time :) ).

Much how I prune fruit trees, imagining a triangle cone, or a spade cone, to maximize the use of sunlight. if we do not prune then inner branches stop putting on buds, die off, or grow way out to crowed the space of other trees, and also eventualy can be too top heavy and pull too much moisture and nutriants that stresses the tree and makes it more susceptible to disease, pruning seems to stimulate the tree, like we are massaging it with feeling and our joy and the tree responds, it seems to sum we are hacking or causing pain. rather instead we are part of nature and not really disconnected. or as a crow or raven pruning and removing branches from a maple tree the tree gladly grows more resource of branches for the crows nests.

Sorry, I’m not a fan. As a child we lived in a house with privet hedges and my dad would make me pick up all the cuttings every time he trimmed them. It left me psychologically scarred 😊
