@14:10 Very wise advice, I pulled the sump off my 2JZ to tidy up some of the 'work' the previous owner had done.. looked like he'd used 10 tubes of 3bond to glue the sump and turbo oil drain on. Found he'd also used it on the oil pump pickup, orifice would have been half the size thanks to all the excess inside the pipe, also found big chucks of it lodged in the oil filter feed.. Very glad I checked.
hey you ever think about how the Chevy SS and the Pontiac g8 where chassis R&D'd in Australia and LS engine made in Canada, which did really well down under but in both Canada and the US no one gave a shit. oh well flip a tahoe and help a miata bro.
To fix the bent valve issue - leave the valve seals off of the exhaust side. Because the exhaust is always under pressure, the exhaust gases inside the exhaust port are always trying to push oil up and out of the exhaust guide, so if you leave the seal off, more oil will get down the guide and lubricate the guide better without causing smoking issues. It doesn't increase oil consumption or smoke, it makes the guides last a lot longer, and also reduces the tendency towards bent valves on the exhaust. An old machine shop guy told me that trick many years ago, I've used it a number of times. You can't do that on the intakes though, because the intake ports are always under vacuum, so it draws oil into the intake causing excessive smoking. Instead, convert the intake valves to an umbrella type seal, this will oil the valve guide better than the more modern seals do without going overboard. This only works for engines that don't have a super high emissions specification to meet, so you use it on "grandfathered" older cars. And of course, change the oil more often to reduce the amount of water in the oil.
@@janeblogs324 9:46 "you can't use too much oil when you're putting it together. If you've got too much it will just leak onto the ground, which is fine"

Maroochydore Cylinder Heads have been great over the years. I've used them a lot and made some weird requests that have all been taken in their stride 👍
@@whatnowstinky Hilarious, I'm sure. I don't like cylinder heads to look like they've been serviced on the outside, I used to request that they not sand blast the outer surfaces. Also had them install large diameter valve seats and then knock out the guides, but then give the head back like that for me to port it, later then obviously finishing off the job. All no problem for MCH 👍 But yeah, definitely ask them about the Tutus...
Awesome!! I've been playing with UZ's lately also and shoving one in my 83' celica supra in the next couple weeks. It will be a nice jump in power over the 5mge its replacing.
Als a quadcam guy can see the love of learning in his eyes Good to see you shopping locally too. Ive snapped a camshaft on a non vvti But due to oil gallery blockage on a motor that has sat a while Pre 96 is non interference
To make it sound American you need to program in some ignition cuts and fuel cuts, i think this would still sound too smooth. The cam gear spring system is a cool thing to see, always tension to take up the small slack there always is with gears.
The dial indicator needs to be parallel to the crank when you check thrust 8:16 . Installed at an angle like it was in the video, those readings are useless. Imagine using a tape measure to cut a piece of plywood. It needs to be square. Any misalignment makes the length wrong.
Depends on the piston supplier, while an offset is common for production engines, 'performance' pistons are normally centred - if it mattered there would be a mark indicating the front of the engine for fitting. BTW, an old-school trick was to reverse the offset to give a slight torque increase from the improved geometry.
@@gordowg1wg145 Yeah fully agree with you it's just something I always check for even if it isn't marked, you never know.. That's cool never heard of people doing that before
I put a plastic chopstick in each spark plug hole if an interference engine is out of cam position. That way you can see which piston is approaching TDC and eye off (or juggle) if its corresponding cam lobe is engaging. No firing order maths or "feel" for contact.
If working alone, a long piece of garden hose slipped over each rod bolt will guide them over the crank journal without the risk of a bolt gouging the crank. Because I once did lol
Did you set the cam timing ? Cause with a single cam for those archaic boat anchors. That might be okay But for fine examples of amazing craftsmanship and engineering. you probably should !!

Unless they measured the angle and did a bit of trigonometry, but something tells me they didn’t.
Check piston pin offset by hanging piston off screwdriver threw pin hole if piston tilts one way it has offset.
Time for glasses Al. Just done them for the same reason. Just something else to carry around or not have ‘em when you need them.
