The original, iconic song was released in 1964 by Simon and Garfunkel, written by Paul Simon. It was performed as a folk song. It was a warning at the time. Disturbed performed it like the warning had not been heeded. Paul Simon loved Disturbed’s version, congratulated them, and posted on his own social media. David Draiman, Disturbed’s lead singer since 1964, was a previously trained Jewish Canter, as were his father and grandfather.
When I was young this was considered the ultimate song about an individual's alienation even surrounded by crowds, actually especially surrounded by the crowd. I think that this cover subtly changes the impetus without changing text from the individual being alienated from society to all society being alienated from all the rest of society despite increased contact.
Great insights, in the Celca React analysis, to what I believe is the definitive version of Simon and Garfunkle's classic "The Sound Of Silence." The theme is alienation and a failure to communicate -- the musicians are gathering their instruments and attempting to interact and orchestrate with fellow musicians. ... so there is hope of breaking through, eliminating alienation, and restoring communication. David's vocals span, as I recall, over two octaves ... and he has such masterful control over the song's dynamics, despite the performance manifesting incredible emotion. A masterpiece. One or two suggestions: the music videos "I Speak Astronomy," or "Pisces" by the progressive metal band Jinjer -- all band members of Jinjer are 'top-drawer,' professional musicians. And, the lead vocalist, Tatiana, is absolutely phenomenal!
Great reaction video. This was a life changing song for me. Musicians and Lyricists need to not be silent. They need to encourage speaking truth to power. They need to bring the music to the people. :-)
GREAT REACTION!!! Mirrored my thoughts when I first heard it. I too, looked into more by this group and was disappointed they don't seem to have done anything else like this. As you said they are a very heavy rock band. But this is an excellent recreation of a classic song from a great composer /artist. It is a sad commentary that was true in the 1960s and is even more true today. Thank you so much for this!
The author of the song, Paul Simon had this to say about the song: “One of the biggest hang-ups we have today is the inability of people to communicate, not only on an intellectual level, but on an emotional level as well. So you have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate. It’s called, “The Sound of Silence”. - Paul Simon 1966 You can see/hear him say this before they begin their performance here: ua-cam.com/video/DczvzKzNLbU/v-deo.html
Written by Paul Simon and released in 1964 by Simon & Garfunkel. The message is we never have to stay quiet and we should not be afraid of speaking out. The genre is considered Folk Rock. A great song. We all know this song just not by this artist.
Omg ty for telling us! First time i (Caspar) Hear it, i know the start from memes online "hello darkness my old friend" thats a classic meme online in any kind, but not the full song
In my teens when this first came out. The neon god they made was the tv in the corner of the room, which stopped people talking , communicating. Today the neon god is far worse the phone. People have headphones on, their heads are down staring at their neon god, they do not even look anymore, at others. Communication is dead

Enjoyed your reaction. Many have said that original version was a warning, but this version is more intense because the warning was ignored.

Thank you for letting me enjoy this musical experience with you!
Disturbed did the best cover of this beautiful song, they are just great and David has a super voice.
