Port Isaac - come for a wander! Virtual step-by-step Walking tour Port Isaac Cornwall or 'Port Wenn'

- We were lucky enough to take a trip to Port Isaac when lockdown 'travel for exercise' restrictions were easing but before holiday accommodation had opened. Being in Port Isaac felt a bit different. Usually it is a busy bustling place with people crowding the streets and shops, eager to spot the cottages and places used in Doc Martin. Chatter, laughter and childish squeals usually fill the air.
On the day we visited, it was so quiet. The stage was still being set, painters with the finishing touches, housekeepers cleaning windows and the few locals that continue to live in the village enjoying a quiet drink on the Platt, with children paddling in the water.
Beginning on the South West Coast Path (SWCP), just west of Port Isaac, we walk to the village to explore the quiet streets, quaint lanes and cute cottages, tucked cheek by jowl in the heart of the village. After winding through the cottages, we walk up Fore Street, passing the Old School House and pick up the SWCP once again that leads to the St Endellion car park, before taking a little footpath, Doctor's Meadow to finish back in the centre of the village with a most photographed view of the harbour.
A challenge for the Doc Martin fans - see how many filming locations you can spot!! Here are four obvious ones: Doc Martin's surgery at 7:41, Aunt Ruth's house at 15:33, Crab and Lobster at 21:28 and Louisa's school at 32:14. We spotted plenty!!
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on UA-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Frequently asked questions:
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

This is one of my favourite videos of all time
I love it more please
I love this village and it’s perfect wish I could visit Cornwall
I love it too. We have stayed a few times, and I feel almost homesick watching. Beautiful video from Sarah and Andrew especially by the shoreline.
Is it too far away to visit? Doc Martin final series will be on TV in the autumn.
Went there with my parents in 1964, went back for a day visit with my wife in about 2010, saw Martin Clunes film in , he waved and smiled at us, I could tell just from this that he’s a nice man, Port Isaac is a lovely place as is most of the south east
Thankyou so so much Sarah and Andrew, this was absolutely beautiful, loved all those little back streets and alley ways, the beautiful harbour, it bought back so many beautiful memories, all the little shops I went into on my holiday I felt I was walking with you all the way. Look forward to watching it again. I am very surprised Andrew walk passed the pasty shop twice and he didn't go in.
Hope your doggie is well ,he didn't walk with you today. God bless you both for sharing these beautiful videos with us,
A great one to watch again, to enjoy the scenery and peace and quiet. Little doggy is fine but so much easier to walk around towns if he stays at home with our daughter! Sarah :)
Crikey ! It's just dawned on me what a difficult job it must be to move into a house along those narrow streets, getting all the furniture in must be a nightmare
I can just smell the sea & 🐟 fish & 🍟 chips 🌅 ❤
Wrapped in newspaper, naturally (don’t forget the mushy peas.) 🐨🇦🇺
I need to sit down and get my breath back after all this walking, simply fantastic and so deserted. I never get fed up visiting this place. Well done you two and thank you.
I think we captured a moment in time and it will probably be back to the hustle and bustle in just a few short weeks! Sarah :)
Thank you for this outstanding video. I always felt that Port Isaac was the best cardio workout village in Cornwall. Heavenly place by the sea.
Glad you enjoyed it! The hills are incredibly steep! Sarah :)
Wow! How lucky are those who live there! Thanks for taking me on a beautiful walk.😍
As an old smuggler at heart, I would love to see a duplicate presentation BUT at Night as a perhaps smuggler would have seen it. Enjoyed this immensely, The laughter of the children was delightful. In America, we have Santa Claus , but I told my children that he was really Sandy Klaws, an old Cornish smuggler who brought the gifts and would do so only if they were in bed and asleep,
Love Sant Klaws! Sarah :)
This short trip was so calm, peaceful and wholesome that I feel like crying. I need to visit there soon!
Wonderful 😍🥾😍....and the sound 😍
It’s soooo beautiful there. The seagull sounds take me back to my childhood. I look forward to the day when I can spend time wandering around this charming location.
Thank you for this beautiful virtuell Walk I wish i would be there in Cornwall.
Lovely peaceful video. I haven’t been up to Port Issac for a while. I think a visit is definitely on the cards now we’re allowed back out.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
Spent a quiet 45mins ''strolling'' with you in this lovely vid which took me back a few years to when we did almost the same walk. Mind you, it was a lot busier then! I remember we saw a baby seagull in the nest on the cliffs as we looked over the side. And a ginger cat sitting on the wall overlooking the harbour. Nice memories. I love your virtual walks....just the sounds of the kids laughing on the beach and the seagulls overhead.....oh, and the odd ''hello'' when you meet people along the way! J x
It was a really enjoyable moment, like you I loved the joyful glee of the children running in and out of the water - must have been quite cold!! Sarah :)
Love, love, loved the video! I cried when you first got to the water. I yearn to be there! Come on Covid, ease up! I want to have lunch on the bench above Port Isaac. With my asthma it may end up being tea before I make it up the hill! Love all your videos! Greetings from Ohio USA!
I echo your cry for COVID to ease up, I think we are all getting COVID weary! Roll on the better times, Sarah :)
Such a cool video! Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Sweden
Beautiful! Roll on September when I will be breathing Cornish air 🥰
What a lovely view of Port Isaac! Feels like I was there with you! It is just as beautiful as seen in Doc Martin, my all time favorite show series!!! Thank you!!!👍🤩🦀🦞🕊☀️✈️🌊🧜♀️⚓️🌅⛴⛵️
Glad you enjoyed it! i think we hit it at a perfect time - so quiet that you can actually see the cottages! Sarah :)
Lovely video today Sarah and Andrew. It felt like I was there walking along with you. Everywhere looked so clean and bright, peaceful and relaxing. Was there two years ago, it was a bit busier then. That's when a seagull swooped down and tried to get my ice cream!! Thank you so much for lovely memories. ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it, I'm sure the seagulls will be practicing their swooping again soon on unsuspecting visitors! Sarah :)
Wow! I don’t ever think I’ve seen a video where it was that quiet in Port Issac. Beautiful.
Yes, it made it very easy to wander around - a time capsule in the making! Sarah :)
That was so uplifting ~ so many beautiful sights. I hadn't realized Port Isaac has some of the prettiest cottages on the planet! It's all adding to my walking list, as soon as I can get back to beloved Cornwall for a decent break. Brilliant work again you two ~ thank you😊
Glad you enjoyed it! Sarah :)
Absolutely beautiful ❤. Thank you 🙏
Beautiful village and nice part of Sw England. 🇬🇧👍👏
Beautiful! Almost like being there myself. Thank you for showing me the great views and all the lovely streets and narrow alleyways in Port Isaac :-)
Our pleasure 😊
Absolutely fantastic, this is one I have been waiting for, they should have been filming for the final series of Doc Martin 10 now, can't wait to get there in June and retrace your steps.
I also recognized one of the Fishermen's friends chatting near the Platt too, brilliant, thank you both for this.
Yes, John Cleave was perched on the wall by the Platt, as you say chatting. Sarah :)
Must be exciting, interesting, & occasionally irritating to have yr village be a movie star in its own right, eh? Such a lovely place! If yr not fit pre-holiday, u'll be well on yr way before returning home.
Indeed, it must be a bit intrusive at times! The Doc Martin film crew were very patient and accommodating though whenever we have seen filming. Sarah :)
We were here on the 12th of June 2021 ...❤❤❤❤ Thank you for the inspiration xx
What a fascinating tour of Port Isaac. Some of it I knew well but so much, especially in the high back-streets was unfamiliar. I'll bet very few tourists see this area.
Watching this last night, I suddenly realised that today (20th April 2021) marks exactly five years to the day when I was last in Port Isaac. That too was a sunny day but much warmer than it appears to have been during your visit. I can recall that is was such a relaxed time and of course we had no idea what lay in store for us in the coming years. I sometimes fear that I'll never see Cornwall again but I can only hope. In the meantime your videos help to fill the gap.
Have you ever done, or plan to do a virtual walk of Boscastle? I'd love to see that, especially if you make it up the the coastguard lookout.
As ever, thank you so much Sarah and Andrew.
Hi and thank you for your lovely comment! Yes, we certainly explored Port Isaac, made so much easier by the low number of people around, not sure it would be possible to film with the usual volume of visitors!
We visited Boscastle yesterday to film a vlog style walk and were hoping to film a virtual one too but alas, the wind has picked up and was too strong and we had to abandon. The town was still quiet and looked beautiful in the sunshine, a multitude of colours in the water too! Hoping to release in a few weeks.
Sarah :)
Missed the banter between you and Andrew and where was the cocker spaniel who we love. Great video of parts of Port Isaac we hardly ever see. Hope dog is okay.
Thank you both soo much for doing
this walk around Port Isaac. What a quaint
little place it looks. I wondered if you would get lost
Andrew. But you seemed to know just where you were
going. I have heard of the place but never been. It’s
a long way from Cambridge.
Just loved it.
A beautiful place! usually very busy. This was filmed during lockdown when we were allowed to travel for exercise but not to stay over so hardly a soul around! Sarah :)
Good news Sarah and Andy im coming to Cornwall leaving Saturday the 5th coming back to Hampshire on the 12th.I'm doing a bit of wrecking and smuggling.I keep a eye out for you two.can't wait plus going back to my favert pub Jamaica inn I thought I let you know. Many thanks keep up the brilliant videos.
Loving the virtual walks many thanks! 🙏😊🇳🇿
Our pleasure! Sarah :)
Love it there
lovely to see you out and about again, love these little port villages, we dont have them here in OZ love u 0x0x0x0x0x0x0
Tucked away in a little cove, compact and quaint! We didn't explore the newer part where that are lots of renovations to metal and plate glass homes - not so prettty! Sarah :)
Magic! At 2:42 this really is ‘Picture Postcard Perfect’. At 10:23, it’s good (but sad) to see the flag at half-mast. 🐨🇦🇺
A picture perfect village! Sarah :)
3 years since I was in Cornwall, maybe time to go back :o)
Loved the walk around Port Isaac. I don't know why you wouldn't stop and talk to the pretty, blond ondine who was following you through the back streets and byways. She clearly wanted to make your acquaintance. Even though we can't be sure her intentions were honourable, a brief dalliance could not have been all bad.
I admire your perseverance on what must have been a tiring walk. Thanks
I love your videos, especially the cooking ones! Any chance you could do one showing how to make a proper English breakfast fry up?
Thank you! Great suggestion but unlikely to appear on our channel in the next few months now that the weather is better and we are able to film our usual content! Sarah :)
@@CornishWalkingTrails Well, if you find yourself facing dreary days of poor weather and are hungry, you know what to do! 😉
great here in the winter
Lovely video and walk can you tell me where did you park please as I would like to do the walk when we come on holiday x🥰
Im going there in May 2022 for 10 days and im staying at the Slipaway its going to be awesome.
That little walkway between the houses where you come out by Honey Cottage, that's what we northerners call a 'ginnel' (hard G as in golf.) Do you have the same name or something different, but not alley as there's no Sally? 🤣
This little passage way is thought to be the narrowest thoroughfare on record being only 18 inches wide. Currently called Squeezee belly alley, a relatively new name from the 1950s, previously known as Temple Bar because the owner of the house had a metal bar blocking public access! so a variety of names but not a collective one that I know of!
@@CornishWalkingTrails Ginnels are narrow passages under houses and so have a covering. If they are open passages then they're just alleys. If this one is so narrow you'd best not feed Andrew any more fish and chips, pasties or cream teas. 😂
@@CornishWalkingTrails Also nice that they named a passage after that famous actress in 'Allo, 'Allo who played the bed-ridden mother - Rose Hill. 😂
Wow hat sich das Verhändert.
I wonder when this footage was shot
Wir kennen den Ort aus der TV-Serie "Doc Martin" - selbst waren wir dort leider noch nicht. Andere Orte in Cornwall sind uns gut bekannt und haben einen ähnlichen Charakter. LG Konrad.
one thing i dont like about this area is the cellular reception sorta sucks . Otherwise it's lovely. Although my fav small seaside village is Glendurgan or Durgan village.
Likewise along a lot of the Cornish Coast, our signal is patchy! Sarah :)
Lovely, just needs some light background music to it.🏖
I feel that natures own 'music' is enough and perhaps you could queue up a playlist on another tab - your favourite music and some beautiful images, what could be better! Sarah :)
How did Jewson manage that delivery ?
Definitely not a straight forward delivery! Good spot!! Sarah :)
im coming there in May and staying at the Slipaway so I would like you both to join me for dinner and drinks if you like and its on me!! let me know Im going to be there from the 9th to the 15th of May 2022
What a great invitation, not sure of our plans for May at the moment! Sarah :)
Flag at half mast?
Were you wearing Doc. Martens? Only 9 weeks before we get down to paradise.
When I watched this, pre-vid was a Dr. Martens ad for their latest short boot.
Ps I mean south west
Dg. Martin würde nichts mehr finden.
