I m a local guy from the valley of flowers . I m a guide with more than 1000 tourists every year . This valley has the most incredible medicinal values one could ever imagine of. You need to understand the values of the flowers and the beauty of this place ..
As i have been working here since 2012 so i have been with so many peoples who expect this as mughal garden which has big-bright flowers which is a myth . I want to clear that their is no gardner here, this is totally untouched natural place . Which is coverd by snow for more than 6 months and then after may till October the valley is open for tourists..... Thanks and please visit the valley of flowers and know its importance and enjoy the beauty.....

I am not a fit person but I trekked all days without a mule.... I think what's more important is that one needs to be strong mentally and it's very much doable..... But yeah being fit is also important and I am working on it.

Loved walking around these streets and really enjoyed VOF and Hemkund sahib.. thanks for all the video lessons @swati. It really helped.. I even took my entire backpack and climbed till joshimath from pulna. That was crazy.. 10km trek with 12 kgs backpack. To all my trekkers I want to suggest one thing if you are not fit then you are not for this race. As Swati said this is a difficult Trek , I would completely agree to this because the trail is completely filled with rocks everywhere. You guys need a very good pair of shoes. Not necessarily expensive ones but you can go with less expensive one like price ranges between 3000 to 5000 INR. Hit the gym hard. Do cardio, cycling, running, weight lifting and resistance exercise. Like a month or 2 before you start your trek, make ur body ready. Ensure ur BMI is in accord to the standard but not obese or malnourished. Eat nutritional food, drink water in fractions.. keep up this habit. Overeating will not really help you to trek and you will regret. Stay fit and keep trekking.. one last thing to add.. after you climb 15000 feet all alone and come back walking, you'll be the most satisfied person as I am without any regrets. Looking forward for more trekking in my life. Cheers! For pictures, follow me on Instagram @jasper.minal

I trekked up the VOF and Hemkund Sahib last week (Aug 2-3, 2018). I felt VOF is slightly difficult because the terrain and path are different compared to Hemkund Sahib path. The VOF path is mostly laid out with large stones which are kind of roundish and the path itself is narrow. Certain places the incline is pretty steep. On the otherhand HS trek is very well laid out with wide paths, slabbed kind of stones to walk on. So, although HS trek is higher, it was a bit easier for me. Also the fact that trekking to VOF the previous day (before the HS trek) greatly prepped the muscle groups involved in climbing up. I feel practicing stair climbing with back pack is essential . Jogging helps to an extent to help build stamina, but it's a different set of muscles that help you to climb steep slopes. Cheers

I did VoF and Hemkund Saheb. Being a devoted runner helped me but I tell you it is not easy if you don't prepare well before. The altitude, oxygen limitation all plays together. But that is the real fun. When you are into the valley, you know you have axhiy something really valuable and memorable. Must do things in life.

I completed the trek last week.I have a normal BMI and prepared for the trek for almost a month . Still it was kind of a challenge being my first Himalayan trek, but glad that I did it without any issue. What you spoke is very relevant. People often get confused with the term "easy /moderate " trek. I would suggest people to sincerely prepare before going on this trek. VoF trek is tough on knees and ankle while descending since the path is narrow and rock laid. But if prepared well , every experience is worth cherishing.

I visited valley of flowers on 31st July.. it was Tough, rain makes it even more difficult. Next day trekked to hemkund sahib which was probably the toughest experience I had, it was steep.. Too steep.. But after completing this trek, the feeling was inexplicable.. Yes, you need to be physically fit, and immensely mentally strong.. Just don't take it lightly and go for a stroll in the park.. But it was magical..when you reach VoF or hemkund sahib, you will have a feeling, okay this is some achievement!

I think people mostly get misled by two things, this trek being categorized under easy to moderate and secondly the name valley of flowers itself doesn't sound intemidating at all.
I was with the 8th July batch this year and due to bad weather we trekked Hemkund before VoF so the valley seemed a cakewalk compared to Hemkund. 😊
This video summaries the crux of the trek quite well 😊
And thanks to the indiahikes team tor featuring one of my pics in the video 😊😊

Just came back from VoF trek with Renok Advenutures (and regret that every second!). I saw another group lead by India Hikes and they looked like everything we desire in a trekking experience. VoF is a difficult trek (although it is classified as easy). Get a good pair of shoes with firm grip and 100% waterproof. For VoF, the path is very uneven and you need to balance yourself carefully whilst walking. Coming down, you might experience pain in your big toe due to the nature of the terrain - so make sure you get a good pair of shoes.
Be mentally prepared for steep climb for Hemkund Sahib. It is a tough walk due to the steep nature of the climb, unless you hire mules to carry you up.
Last but not the least, please avoid Renok Adventures, they screwed my trekking experience with their amateurish handling.

Hi Anupam, you'll find that in terms of organising the trek, Valley of Flowers is a lot easier. In fact, you don't need an organisation like Indiahikes to do the trek. Just go for the trek by yourself. But prepare for the big ascents, much more than you might have seen on the Brahmatal trail.

We are getting some kind of "Luxury" only because of Hemkund sahib. Lots of pilgrims comes there every year including old age people. for their help(ofcourse they can spend lots of money) there are many arrangements like horses, helicopter services, path side shops etc. toilets too. but in the way to VOF trekking, its only for travellers like us. there were no shops, no horses, no toilets, even we can't fill our water bottles from the streams. means we are by our own. so VOF is always peaceful and silent.

There's nowhere to spend the night between Pulna and Ghangharia - you must cover it in one go. But mules are readily available throughout the trail - you can get on one at almost any point in the trail.
There's no mules or ponies on the VoF trail. There are pitthus that'll carry your bag - but given it's a one day trek, your bag should only have food, water and rain gear. They're of 0 use if they're with a pitthu somewhere - so wouldn't recommend that as an option. There is a "palki" service - where you're basically carried on 4 people's shoulders. But (a) you have to hire their services at Ghangharia itself, can't do it on the trail somewhere and (b) they go only till the start of the valley, not all the way. They also return fairly soon from what I saw (I returned to the valley from the khak trail at 2pm, and didn't see a single palki, much to my pleasure)
You won't need a sleeping bag - there are hotels in Ghangharia that'll supply you with as many blankets and quilts as you may want. You aren't allowed to stay in the valley of flowers overnight - there's no camping option on this trip. I did see shops _selling_ jackets and shoes in Ghangharia - but I don't know if they rent it out or not.
There's a fairly big city called Srinagar around 4 hours from Rishikesh. You could spend the night there and reach Joshimath the next day after another 4 hour journey (& do the 1-hr journey to Govindghat the next day). Alternately you could stay at Rudraprayag, that would be 5ish hours from Rishikesh and a similar distance to Govindghat. Rudraprayag doesn't have as many accommodation options as Srinagar, but you'll find homestays and such.
That said, if you're not comfortable travelling longer than 5 hours in a car, I'm not sure you'll be comfortable trekking this trail. Walking 3kms in the plains is a really different ball game from trekking these trails, especially in their current condition (much of the trail is currently damaged, due to cloud bursts). My friends struggled a *lot* - and they're under 30, fairly normal BMIs and walked 5km/day in preparation for the trek. What I learnt is proper cardio, that raises your heartbeat by quite a bit, is important - just walking what you _think_ is "briskly" isn't enough. You also must be mentally prepared for the physical exertions - it isn't an "easy" trek by any stretch of the imagination (at least with current trail conditions)

Pay heed to her.. carry a 10ltr of bagpack. A pole is necessary. It's tough. But totally worth it. And yeah there is horse shit everywhere. Get ready for that. It was an awesome trek 5 days without cellphone.
