I go on long treks and expeditions. And I would choose a padded jacket, just because it is easier to maintain. Which is one of the most important things up in the mountains. You will get rain, you will get showfall and you will sweat a lot, once the jacket gets wet, it is useless, will take longer to dry. A down jacket fails misable in this aspect. Unless you use it only at nights when it gets colder. But then again you put on an inner thermal and well even a fleece jacket will keep you warm , put a waterproof/windproof jacket over that and you can easily take temperatures of -20 to -30. Down jackets are just fancy to look at and in my opinion completely pointless, unless you are someone who feels very cold and/or you are going to altitudes above 25,000 feet.
Living at altitude of 2200 metres.. According to my experience padded jackets are best because harsh and cold winds can easily penetrant down jackets....
that also depends how you are wearing them usually hikers that use down jackets use them as a mid layer an wear a shell jacket on top that is probably made of goretex

Exactly. Such expensive stuffs are needed for expeditions not normal treks. As a Pahari I can tell you that you don't need expensive shoes, jackets and fancy stuff for trekking. I did Valley of Flowers, Hemkund Saheb and Vasudhara Falls in a 300 rs shoe and they worked well.

Would recommend buying sustainable environmental friendly ones. We don’t have to steal bird feathers to keep ourselves warm. These days there are many down jackets made with recycles polyesters and other things that keep you warm the same way as these do. Please look into them and hope you make a better choice for yourself and the planet 🌸
Good video. It is really important to realize that you always need to bring the proper kit where you are going since there is no “one size fits all” insulation.
If the down is sourced ethically, down jackets have a lesser environmental impact than padded jackets. Because every time you wash a padded jacket, it releases microplastics which aren't natural. So it's still a draw :)

Its a simple case of buying a better product if you can afford to buy it and maintain it properly. You can go for inferior product if you want to save some money and want to be careless with maintanence. The only real downside with down is perforamamnce drop once wet but all imformed users buy a rain jacket along with a down to take care of this which is again just a matter of spending some more money. This is quite similar to wool vs polyster. Anyone who can afford to buy and take care of wool should go for wool.
Very good Information. I'm going to Kedar nath in May 2021. All these suggestions and updates will help me have good knowledge as I pick my layers too keep me warm and safe.❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍
I will bring both. I love rainproof, windproof fleece padded coat over a down coat on single digit Fahrenheit degree weather. Very often, I layer 3 down coats, XS, S and middle size. I never get sick on single digit Fahrenheit degree weather.
The question should be, which costs more, naturally Down Jackets are far better, lighter and more expensive? The really best Down Jackets are also water proof, example Canada Goose Down Jacket the Rolls Royce of Down Jackets will set you back roughly 75,000 Rupee's or US$1000.00 minimum. Enjoy.
People are better off buying padded or polyfill jacket , because it's extremely difficult for people to judge the authenticity of down jackets especially if they have no knowledge about it. They're not at all meant for trekking. They are very heavy, get wet easily and don't dry for a long time. For a trek you need something light and compact, and also needs to be fairly water repellent.
Hi. Water resistance is a plus point of a Padded Jacket as most of the jackets are coated with at least a bit of waterproofing material. Which means they can withstand slight rain, slight snow for at least half an hour, one hour. It depends on the waterproofing on the jacket.
believe there is a separate down detergent for the 'down' ones. check out... But decathlon themselves tell to just do a light wash with warm water and shd be good to go.. no need to machine wash with tennis balls, or rigorous wash, or dry cleaning, just plain, light wash..
Down jackets need a lot of care Ananya. - You cannot put them into the washing machine with other clothes. - Do not use detergent on it. A tip that we recommend is to put a tennis ball into the washing machine to maintain the fluffiness of the jacket. When inside a washing machine the feathers bunch up in a corner - which is not good. So when you put a tennis ball into the washing machine: while the jacket dries, the tennis balls will bounce around the machine, constantly hitting the jacket like you would fluff a pillow back into shape.

Down jackets need a lot of care Ananya.
- You cannot put them into the washing machine with other clothes.
