This is a man who knows his shit. I wish my MT-07 had adjustable suspension. It feels like riding a bouncy rock like that MT-10 looked before he adjusted it. I've already adjusted the preload on the rear (5/9) and put thicker oil in the forks (10w to 15w) and removed 5mm of air but that's all I can do without spending a lot of money. By the time I've spent all the money upgrading the suspension I could have just bought an MT-09 or MT-10.
@@catalystreactionsbw Thanks for the tip. I assume adjustable caps won't do the trick alone and I'll have to actually shorten the spacer first? If so that can be a job for the next owner because I can't be bothered to take the forks apart again xD
@@6Twisted Adjustable caps could make the situation worse if you are using the OEM spacers at stock length. Measure your static sag now. It should be 20-25mm. If it isn't then cut the spacers 12mm, install and measure again.

What a vast amount of knowledge, riveting watching Dave. I've adjusted my Hayabusa by the recommendations in the manual too after watching your video's Dave, and please to say that the setting really needed adjusting, the front for instance were not even at the same clicks. I've done 3 clicks out. As its a new bike for me I didn't know how it performed before I done the adjustments. The rear however, there very limited space to get in and make shock adjustments, but will try again soon. After the Corona virus clamp down, (were not allowed to make unnecessary journeys in the UK) I'm looking forward to riding my bike again. You got me real hooked Dave thanks for your attention to detail. Regards Dave D
Thanks for taking the time to invest in yourself and your bike to enjoy the result of much better handling! Yes, the shock area is tight for preload but I have no doubt you will get that changed as well. A tip of the hat to you sir!
Dave I just watched a video on how to set rebound on your bike and I was cringing the whole time it was very bad and made me thankful that you do the work you do giving the correct information is very important thanks for all you do and Happy New Year.
Somehow I got a puncture in the bladder in the rear shock on my yz125, which released most of the nitrogen into the suspension fluid. Talk about pogo! I decided to just go ahead and rebuild the front and rear suspension and I've gotta say it taught me so much about how important proper suspension setup is. I just started from factory settings and worked from there, but honestly I think the single most important part was setting the race sag, I didn't realize how much that would help especially if you plan on adjusting the suspension, you've gotta have a proper base setting to work off
Thanks for diving into the work after the bladder failure. The results are certainly worth the work and now via a little fine tuning via your eyes in monitoring how much travel is used in the forks and shock, your bike will truly becomes YOURS!
Hi Dave , that's the wonderful video on how does preload and rebound works. I have a Kawasaki Z900 and how does it's forks setting works on it. It has one side of preload and rebound adjusters and the other side nothing. Recently I found that the bike looses it's control on suspension easily feel it during cornering.
I have never witnessed a true Guru ever in my life until now. Something like this should be boring as hell but but far from it lmao it carzy I need come see this guy with my bike.
Just some free advice, get your static sag dial in correctly from and rear that will solve 90% of your handling. Then fine tune compression and rebound one at time.
This is very handy for me, having just boughta Street Triple R 765, I find my suspension is quite similar to his in stiffness, I think I will look into adjusting it, although my suspension is different so will need to delve a bit further into what changes what... Thanks for the informative videos Dave.
Look at the shock travel on the shock shaft and use a cable on the right fork leg. That will tell you how soft/stiff they are. From there once sag is set, you adjust compression to get more or less travel and rebound based on oil viscosity when hot. In the channel search rebound and search compression for the correct videos. Enjoy the learning.
Awsome explanations and results there.*doublethumbsup* You even see on video that the biles will be a lot smoother aft erthat treatment. The BMW impressed me a lot . On the one hand that the rider is still alive without any rebound and on the other hand that you can adjust even that in the panel.....
Wish I would have known how experienced and knowledgeable you are at setting up sportbikes for riders. Believe I saw you twice last year at Buttonwillow at Cali track days, remember seeing that hat you're wearing. I've always been very nervous to have someone setup my suspension. I ride a 2015 S1000RR w/ DDC, (A) group rider about mid level, not the slowest but not the fastest. Never had a bikes suspension setup for me before so really curious how it would feel.
Whew may 8th my 1st track day at PIR. C group - seemed a wise idea. I'm using my 2005 Suzuki Gsx-R 750 No clue on the suspension adjustments. At this point I just hope for good weather 🙏😆
Set sag at 30-35mm front and rear. Set compression at 50% of the total range and figure out what cold pressures you should start with. Put a cable tie on the right fork tube to assess travel used and spend a bit of time in the garage working on ergonomics. Once you have done all that, continue your focus on the weather :)

I've already adjusted the preload on the rear (5/9) and put thicker oil in the forks (10w to 15w) and removed 5mm of air but that's all I can do without spending a lot of money. By the time I've spent all the money upgrading the suspension I could have just bought an MT-09 or MT-10.
Looks like you didn't measure static sag on the forks. 15w fork oil is corrcet, but you need to shorten the preload spacer by 12mm.
If they like the setup they dont return, you kidding me, how rude is thet, at lets say thank you very much David.
I haven't meet anyone with knowledge like this. Ive been following David, and just watching and listening has improved my riding zx1400r Kawasaki to level unimaginable level,, corners hittings, say sign show 35km im hitting at 75km smooth and sweet, eveyone has different riding levels, follow David, and you will see in shorter time to find best riding style for you. Track days are the best
Could watch this all day!!
Best video about suspension ever!
Just need to watch is 5 times to see what to make on my mt10.
If You ever come to Italy or Austria, ill be there to set my bike too.
Dave Williams, editor, replying here. We have many articles, videos, and podcasts on the MT-10 at the website. You'll learn exactly what to do with yours. Here's a link to one of many. davemosstuning.com/2018-fz-10-mt-10-test-ride/
I'll have the choc top with nuts please..
Merry Xmas Dave and Dave have a great festive seasons boys
I really need this guy to set up my bike! Great job sir!
Thank you! Email me dave@davemosstuning.com
Supercalafragileisticexpealadicious! Properly tuned or set up suspension is truly everything! and ICE CREAM! ;)
@@catalystreactionsbw Thanks Dave, keep making them brilliant video's. They're very informative my friend. 🤘
Another top video @DaveMoss, it would have been great to see the last guys reaction after the initial set up.
Noted!
Amazing to watch someone so good in action. Very impressive Dave 👍
Thank you. Did it inspire you to get some tools out and have a go?
The ice cream truck makes the scene even better. 😂
Love your videos man, as a bike mechanic your videos are the best stuff on youtube for me ;D
Dave I just watched a video on how to set rebound on your bike and I was cringing the whole time it was very bad and made me thankful that you do the work you do giving the correct information is very important thanks for all you do and Happy New Year.
Thanks for the feedback. Always good to hear that our videos offer a very high quality product.
What a guy. Give out this great advice and fixes all there bikes as well for free. A big thumbs up from me and subscribing 💯👍
Hahah... you are a rare person. You understad the bike way better then his rider. I would like to see someone like you doing this on cars.
What an amazing video. He certainly knows his stuff. 👍🏻👍🏻
Then fine tune compression and rebound one at time.
brilliant dave ill be takeing more time on brakes and the bike set up video and shocks ill be checking great stuff steve mac uk sheffield
@@catalystreactionsbw thanks very much for the detailed reply, shame I am in the UK or I'd just pay you to set it up perfectly for me.
Thank you for give us your experience. 😊😊😊
Awsome explanations and results there.*doublethumbsup* You even see on video that the biles will be a lot smoother aft erthat treatment. The BMW impressed me a lot . On the one hand that the rider is still alive without any rebound and on the other hand that you can adjust even that in the panel.....
Merry Christmas Dave from Philippines... Very nice video...
👍👍👍 Thanks for providing access to your skills and knowledge, appreciate it
very educational video, now I start understanding motorbikes is.
You're a heck of a suspension pro. Wow !
Thank You Dave Moss I playing with my MT 10 you helped me out!
I'm using my 2005 Suzuki Gsx-R 750
No clue on the suspension adjustments.
Suspension setup is the next hurdle in my motorcycle education. Where is DMT located? Ever come to Salt Lake City?
The level of knowledge that a proper suspension setup requires is staggering. Subscribed!

@@catalystreactionsbw Do you ever come to Utah Motorsports Campus (formerly Miller Motorsports Park)?
@@nspinicelli Went there for years helping riders at track and race events. Numbers have dwindled so much that it was a total loss going there by quite a lot of $$. Shame, used to live in Park City and love that track!
@@catalystreactionsbw Oh no! I just moved back, the last event I was at was 2013. Numbers have dwindled since then? Any idea why? Utah is SUCH a great place to ride.
You are incredible. Thank you for those videos, now i will try to do my own set up on my z1000sx (2019).
When someone is helping you and explaining every thing that they are doing you need to be listening and maintaining eye contact while they are speaking to you. Guy just walking away on his phone is just really disrespectful.
I love the Suburban Delinquent shirt at 14:45 on the dude sitting in the background!
Awesome video mr moss
Moss just knows his job way too well lol and idea what a 130 pound rider on a 2005 zx10r good shock starting point.
