After the death of Robert the Bruce, Douglas put a piece of his heart in a necklace and wore it every time he was in battle. As a way to honor Robert as he will always a part of the struggle.
he actually took the whole heart of The Bruce down to the Holy Land and wore it into battle around his neck. he was to take it to Jerusalem for internment on holy ground per Roberts request. he died in battle before he could complete the mission and according to legend he threw the heart at his enemies before he was struck down.
@Steveelder5306 The good Sir James never made to the holy land. He died at the battle of Teba in Spain, against the moors. You are correct about the Bruce's heart. King Robert asked James to take his heart to the holy land. The Bruce wished to go on crusade but never made it.
The Bruce's heart was taken by Douglas in a special silver casket (around his neck) to Spain, where he and his companions died in battle with it (at Teba). Then it was retrieved and taken back to Scotland and buried in Melrose Abbey. Not quite the Holy Land, but the Heart fought infidels, I suppose.
A forgotten Scottish hero, amazing man, up there with Bruce and Wallace, he was a great friend to Bruce, sadly forgotten now, although not is Spain where he died, they have a annual parade in Teba near Malaga, it brings a tear to my Scottish eyes
I am his kin, I have always wanted to visit. Currently working in Norway, it would be special to me if I could visit Teba. I dont want recognised I just want to see the battlefield.
@@alteredbeast7145you’re not his kin. You’re American, nae doubt. You lot need to stop this. You’re not related to any Scottish hero in any tangible way. The people who live on this island fucking hate when you say you are. Stop it. You’re American.
Absolutely, we need a show on hbo about William Wallace, James Douglas, and Robert the Bruce in the same tone and style as outlaw king, telling the story of William Wallace, Wallace’s death and how that sparked a second rebellion lead by Robert the bruce and James “The Black” Douglas , it would tell all three of there stories and it could take place between the years 1297-1330. From the first battle sparked by William Wallace and it could end with Douglas throwing Robert’s heart into the battlefield and charging to his death, iv always wanted a show like that, and it would be historically accurate as much as possible of course
The black Douglas was a great warrior he died in Spain after scotland had won its freedom he was fighting the moors because they were terrorizing the spanish Christians he died with robert the Bruce's heart in a locket around his neck
Black Douglas was genuinely one of the most notorious and feared knights of his time, i think this depiction of him does him an injustice as he was feared not only in scotland and by the English, but across the whole of the british Isles and across the channel for his barbarism and cunning. He was known far and wide for being a great Knight and a truly fearsome and merciless opponent to anyone who dared oppose him
He had the good fortune to be peer with Thomas Randolph. Who captured Edinburgh with a handful of men. Randolph later served as Regent. Alas, that was the last time Scotland had balls.
@@alteredbeast7145Scotland has always had balls. The problem is the historical lack of brains-leadership most of the time. The Bruce had that advantage, but few others before or after him did. Fighting the English especially “smart”, was something few did after him.
I had no idea that this was the actor who played Kick-Ass until about 2 years after 'Outlaw King' was released. He was immense in this role, so much so, that i thought it was some unknown Scottish actor. That scene at Loudoun Hill where he's battering the English Man at Arms shouting "What's my fuckin' name??" , just goading the guy to say his name as the last thing he ever says on this Earth is incredibly powerful.
Just before my 4th great grandmother left Scotland when she was just a girl, her grandfather told her "Do not forget lass that you are descended from Douglas the red and Douglas the black". It's always been in our family lore, and I have been able to trace the genealogy back now to confirm it. Of course many millions of people are also descended from the Black Douglas! I love learning about my ancestors.
Bothwell Castle in Scotland has 2 boulders at the entance of a long footpath to the Castle, Imprinted are the names Moray on the left and Black Douglas on the right . My Gran and Papa Graham moved to Bothwell from Uddingston years ago.
Commoners wouldnt dare say things on those days too. Its just that the power of the state is so terrifyingly high today that it would take a huge sacrifice to get even basic rights back. But most westerners are too nuetered to say anything.

The Hollywood sword, spear and axe fighting killed this movie. They should have showed more how brute and menacing medieval weapons were. Yes, a little realism is wanted, but I feel the only scenes that were actually might be close to realism of medieval battles were the use of maces. It was no joke, those things were swung wildly and it can knock anyone out.
We knew Wallace’s story, we finally learned of Robert the Bruce, now I want a Douglas story
