No matter what though, Kim will always be the first American World Champion, and I think that it was her win that opened the door for Americans to be considered as international contenders. Kim was the first American to ever be looked at as a real threat to the Europeans in gymnastics (while Mary Lou did a ton for the sport herself, she never actually beat the best in competition), and that's something she can always hang her hat on. I think Kim's legacy will absolutely stand the test of time.
Right. There was no chance the European judges were going to hand this kid an Olympic gold medal. There was just too much controversy. I'm not saying that she was robbed of a medal, but she was competing against a stacked deck. She's a true champion though in American gymnastics and deserves a ton of respect in my opinion.
I think many people would tell you that she wasn't the favorite- despite her success at 1991 & 1992 Worlds. A handful of other gymnasts- Gutsu, Miller, Milosovici, Lysekno- were regarded as more qualified all-around gymnasts. There was an undercurrent of international backlash against Zmeskal that intensified after her 1991 Worlds win. Was she the favorite w/ the U.S. media & U.S. public? Yes. But internationally, no. You can sort-of compare Kim's situation w/ that of Jordyn Wieber in London.
You do realize that if the night of team finals had been the all-around night she would’ve won right? She beat everyone that night. And also Gutsu didn’t even qualify for the all-around ...
@@golife7475 Without Gutsu's fall she is ahead of Kim by a wide margin in team optionals. I think it is something like 0.87. Granted that is a what if but all these Kim hypotheticals are what ifs too.
I think that is a good summary and Wieber in London is a great parallel. Right down to even losing the Olympic Trials to the next budding US star- Miller and Douglas, right before the Games, for both.
I love how they pretend like they’re allowed to eat “lunch”

It kills me that Kim didn't do better at the Olympics. She was the favorite.
I never saw this either, brought tears to my eyes when they place the medal around her neck and her Mom's reaction! Thanks for sharing!
Should have saw her reaction at 1992 Olympics. She seemed different from the mother we saw. Almost evil.
What a horrible and depressing place that ranch is
@danasuperstar Her fall on the compulsory beam routing started her on a downward spiral from there. If only she had hit that routine..just think
2:20-2:23 As a mom I lost it watching Clarice lose it! Lol
oh wow! I never saw this.. I miss watching Kim compete!
Kim, Kerri and Hilary Grivich

Kim Zmesklal, world champion.
@violet46 (meant to type routine not routing lol)
How could you drop your kid off at that "ranch" and think that's ok?
Her parents are creepy af
