For years I've been trundling out the harbor watching the mullet topping the surface and never given it a go myself - but this year you've convinced me! Thanks for the great video!
Hi Tom, popped in to the shop last Monday, just wanted to say many thanks for patience and service, thoroughly enjoyed meeting and talking fishing, will let you know how it goes with the bar and dongle, many thanks again 👍
Wonderfully informative. The mullet in my creek are increasing in numbers now, so I shall ramp up proceedings. Some great tips there, and a few new bits to get my hands on, I shall definitely 'Mullet' over!! 👀
Great Video Tom, keep showing the tackle mate, it is great to see what is on the market, also thanks for tuition very handing to know, I stayed at the Riverside apartments in Christchurch last year, wish i had known that then will be good for when we return there.
Thanks, mate. Although the wife doesn't like me "showing the tackle" publicly. 🤣 Next time your down, definitely give mullet spinning a go. It's far too much fun!
Been watching and learning via your UA-cam videos.... great fun and so informative. I came to the shop last wk .... awesome place and what helpful and friendly staff you have. I have Always fly fished for bass, mullet and mackeral locally to you. Give me a shout if you ever fancy a few hrs fly fishing for them. I am trying this Yr with some fine tweaks, I can get those gilthead on the fly as well. How about a fly versus bait challenge in poole harbour.?
Thanks, mate. Glad you've been enjoying the vids. The gilts on the fly sounds really interesting! I'd love to know how you get on with that! The fly vs bait challenge also sounds a lot of fun! We should look into doing this!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Here in the Florida panhandle I grew up fishing mullet setting gil nets then throwing cast nets never by rod or reel. Any mullet every hooked were rare or foul hooked. I wonder if these rigs setup would work here in the gulf.
Do you know what type of mullet you get? We use this method for a species we call thin lipped mullet (Chelon ramada). I'm sure if you get the same species, you catch on this method. It's loads of fun.
@@FishyTom Striped mullet some called it a grey mullet, roughly the same sizes as the ones y'all are catching. We use them for everything really, live bait, cut bait, crab trap bait, ones with size we fillet and eat.
I always find it odd we don't value mullet in the UK the same way. We only really fish for them for sport, and most people don't even do that. We never use them as bait, despite everywhere I've travelled to using them regularly as bait. You'll have to let me know how you get on spinning for them.
I'm glad I stocked up on isome worms before the rush now 😂 that little bait tub looks like it might be perfect solution for us fishing with prawns whilst wading... Always too lazy to trudge back to get a freshy...🤔
Thanks Tom for the informative video, looking forward to some new Mullet videos soon. Will the shop be making up some spinner sets for sale again this year? If so I’ll reserve one please!
Nice I’ll be trying the new set up, I used the previous video setup a couple of days ago and had a bass first cast 😂 I did use live common lug tho and not rag worm.
Well that's a result, even if not the intended target. Interesting to hear you used lug. I've not tried that. Did the worm hold together ok after a few casts?
@@FishyTom the worm lasted a few casts I was changing them quite often. When a bass had hit it poor mr lugworm was a bit worse for wear. However ended up with a few schoolies this way. I will be trying ragworm next as I have never caught a mullet.
Another little mod to think about is using a titanium wire instead of fluoro, I’ve tried a low breaking strain (about 6lb I think) that I use for perch fishing. Small diameter but more rigid than fluoro so fewer tangles
I tried this last year, it worked brilliantly in theory, but I had the wire damage the mouth of a fish. I appreciate this could have been a one off, but it was enough to put me off.
Hi Tom, great instructional video. I only found your videos in January this year but have subscribed and watch as many as I can. Could you please tell me whether the hooks that you use for mullet spinner are barbed or not, I am new to this so it would help to know. Thank you
@@FishyTom Fair enough, any tips then on coping with the line twist please? At present I do 10 casts with a Mepps and then change to a SG Pencil type lure for two casts and retrieve the line through my finger and thumb under pressure to try and straighten out the line before going back to the Mepps, but, typically worry I am missing fish when managing the line🤯
Well, this is a strange one. I will say no, because the hundreds of hours I've put into mullet spinning over the years I've not caught a single thick. However, I am reliably informed, and by good anglers, that they do catch thicks on the spinner in certain parts of the UK.
Another very insightful video Tom, just a quick question re the SG2 is it the ultra light game rod and could it also be used for some light mackrel spinning from rocks or the beach if conditions permitted
Yes. It's rated 3-15g, so suitable for anything that involves chucking lures in that bracket really. I've used it for chub and perch fishing on the river. I've yet to chuck light jigs for mackerel, but I bet it would be a joy.
Hi Tom, possibly a stupid question coming your way, do you require to have any sort of of rod or fishing permit to fish that location ? Cheers & great videos as always.
Hi mate. That's not a stupid question at all! If you want to fish in Christchurch Harbour you will need either a day permit, a yearly harbour ticket or an RDAA membership. The day permit is available through the Go Catch Fish app.
Tom: bit of an upgrade to the spinner set up this year Me:Looks down at all the spinners I tied last week in antisapation 👀 Looking forward to getting down there though 🎣
Hi thanks for the video, which size wormer hooks im confused😣 on your link it says no4 is size 10 but you said size 6 wormer hook, which do I order ? Many thanks
I use an Alberto knot. I use this for all my lure fishing, it's never let me down. It's quick and easy to tie (after a bit of practice of course) and is nice and small.
Definitely not! Mullet don't have particularly small mouths. Mist importantly with any fishing though, is to match the hook size to the bait you're using. Size 10 or 12 hooks are no good for ragworm. They'd be fine for fishing with bread.
@@FishyTom I'm using a size 6 with bread and I can't catch a damn thing in a river full of them. I'm using a 5,6 daiwa custom with just a hook and bread and not a thing is happening and I was told cause my hook is too big. What do u think.
I lived for six months at a place called Port Carlisle. It has an old harbour and creeks. I spent 6 months attempting to catch Mullet. They errr there! I felt that as a course fishing person I’d have no problems. No chance!!!!!!!! I couldn’t catch any of them!!!!!!!! I tried spinning. No success at all either

You must try it! I insist! And then you can come to the same Mullet Addicts Support group as me.

🤣🤣 brilliant.
I look forward to your mullet video mate...
Great video Tom, order placed! A short video of how you use that baiting needle would be very useful.
That sounds like something I can do tomorrow whilst I'm out fishing for the mullet... (I can then claim it's a "work" trip!) 🤣

hi tom as you sell reels and i assume rods, why are they not on your website.
Great descriptive video Tom thank you !
Thanks matey. Do you spin for the mullet?
thanks very informative and makes you want to go out and try. what size of the stonfo needle do you advise?
Sorry for late reply! Playing catch up on a few comments I've missed!
I use the redpoint needles in either 15cm or 20cm.
Great video and some interesting tweaks. Do you add a swivel up the line please? Because Mepps cause me no end of line twist issues 🤦♂
I don't mate. Sadly swivels do very little in real life!
