Guess what your video did to me. I paused your video for 5 mins and made myself two cauliflower (that was the only stuffing at home) sandwiches generously loaded with butter and tabasco sauce. And then enjoyed watching the rest of video while I gorged on my sandwiches. Thanks John, great dinner idea! :))

Honestly, in Japan I learned the art of "Less is more". There are fewer ingredients put between the bread-it's basic bread...but each ingredient speaks so beautifully by itself-you don't want to over-complicate it with sauces and extra toppings.
So the fruit and cream sandwich (oh my word): The kiwi, strawberry, mango...were all EXAMPLES of how that food should taste. No under-ripe strawberries...no browned lettuce. Each element is perfect in and of itself. If you doubt me, go to Japan and see what I mean-you'll thank me.

    • @Silentgrace11
      @Silentgrace11 6 років тому +66

Keep in mind, the sandwiches shown in this video are all from a lot of more specialty shops. Specialty shops might have a wider variety of options, but honestly the main reason they're more expensive is the novelty of it and the fact that they're often placed in train stations, where other food options may not be available (especially stations for bullet trains. Think about it like how airports and amusement parks will have overpriced food because your options are limited to whatever's on the premises). They make for really nice videos like these, by all means, and I have no doubt that they are better quality; however, they aren't necessarily always worth it.
On the other hand, I usually went to a convenience store for any of my sandwich needs ;) It's probably changed a bit since it's been a few years, but an egg, tuna or fruit sandwich was usually 100 to 120 yen, a pork cutlet sandwich might be more like 200 yen, while special sandwiches would be upward towards 300-400 yen (ie: while I was there Gudetama was still a big thing, so a pork cutlet sandwich with a soft boiled egg on top with Gudetama on the wrapper was available for 350 yen). Plus, while they may not be as fresh as the specialty shop sandwiches (which were probably made within a few hours of being sold), they're still pretty fresh because of certain laws regarding food sales in Japan. It made for a pretty filling lunch!

Maybe the prices have gone up since I was there, but it was definitely a rarity if I ever spent more than 150 yen on my lunch on a given day ^^" I'd usually get a sandwich or onigiri, and they were typically around the prices I listed above.

In America, the convenience store sandwich is something to be feared! More likely to make you sick than think was delicious. In Japan, the sandwich as reached culinary heights. You might think "Oh it's just a sandwich, I'll make one at home" but you can't. You just can't replicate these sandwiches at home. Something about the soft Japanese milk bread and the flavor of Japanese Mayo with its rice vinegar creates a unique tanginess. Even something as simple as a ham and cheese has a whole new dimension. I wish i could run out and get one right now!

Carrie Li I think they have to make them bland. Two reasons.
      A) The nicer and Spicer ingredients are expensive.
      B) They are scared they might get sued for food allergies.
      .......
And most "exotic" dishes are dumbed down for American pellets anyways. I know.. I went to a Filipino restaurant once and was disappointed. I'm a half blood Filipina myself. My mom's cooking is way better.

Let me fix that for you..
First, find someone who strains their voice to obtain that cheesy "movie voice" that is so commonly considered to be cheap (because it's not the persons natural voice and they refuse to stick to their own vocal range)
Second, find some free music, slap it on the video, even if it doesn't fit. After all, these are sandwiches, copyright free classical is 'perfect' for it.
Third, Don't spell Kiwi Properly, call it a KiKi instead.
Fourth, Show the sandwiches from only one real angle. They're just sandwiches.
Fifth, and last, write some horribly cringy scripting, which tries to play off the cheesy, forced movie voice of the guy you convinced to narrate. He doesn't realize how cringy he sounds, anyway, so it's a match made in heaven.
Bonus Sixth.. Don't worry about people calling you out for the cliche and cheap writing, narration, and music, because fanboys will instantly attack anyone who criticizes you.

I live in the UK and as grateful as I am for the country I live in, usually the shop bought sandwiches leave a lot to be desired. So many flavours, so fresh and well presented. I really feel like just having a delicious sandwich for dinner tonight now after watching this.

Who knew Japan had sandwiches?! I didn't! They look really good,if I traveled there, it would probably the first thing I try there. I'm Italian and not used to Asian food so it would be a good starter for me,since I don't like 🍣 . But these look great! 😳 I admire Japanese culture, everything is so clean, and products are very precise and detailed.

Everytime I used to go to Tokyo for work I always loved tasting different foods. Some of the sandwiches were really odd combinations but were tasteful just the same.
Another must for any traveler is eating an entire meal from a vending meal. In the US it normally is stale, bland, or poor quality food items. Not so in Japan. You can get beer, saki, wine or hot tea to drink. Then almost anything else you want. All from a vending machine. I got a grilled ham an cheese sandwich that was actually grilled inside the machine.
On one trip my host and I found a restaurant that was entirely vending machines. The odd and interesting thing was there were no employees working there. You bought your items, got a pair of chopsticks and sat down and ate. The place was very clean and even a western style pizza was really good. I tried a lot if different foods that afternoon.
