@@lightbringer24 Makes sense that it was a prototype Assuming that it couldnt do anything - probably even if it was fixed - and because of the Abilities Samus probably sold off to the federation, they could advance the Emmis and give them some of these abilities
10:48 idk, bosses never gave me this feeling of dread, for me it was super fun learning every attack (especially parry attacks). It felt like "may be i lost all my equipment and I'm weak, but i am still samus aran" and it rather filled me with determination.
With how many metroid games there are available to play just on nintendo switch online+expansion pass i definitely suggest you look into it. Dread is definitely not an exactly great starting point since its one of the hardest in the series, but zero mission is a decent start. There is also metroid samus returns but idk how tolerant you are for constant stops and playing on 3ds. But yeah we are in a second golden age. The prime remaster is also on switch. Still waiting for echos to be remastered or ported as thats my personal favorite
If you wanna get into the series I’d recommend trying Prime remastered or zero mission as your first game! Of course if dread is the one you’re most interested in don’t let this stop you :) Dread is definitely playable as your first game, its just that a lot of things from other games are paid off in dread, and the story will feel more complete with the other games!
Great video, loved the 30 seconds recap of Dread with the animations. I thought you would talk a bit more about the EMMI parries and the feeling it creates on players. Sure, you're powerless against the EMMI before you have the omega cannon, but if you get caught, there is always a chance to survive, actually you have 2 chances to escape, so even when you get caught you're still at the edge of your seat trying to break free with a very precise timing, which can lead to very cool escape moments. Also the gameplay on Dread is so smooth, it's great how the game can make you feel insanely powerful but also very helpless in some situations. Man I love Metroid!
For me metroid fusion almost caused me more dread. In fusion I was always dreadful of when the S-ax might show up. I think the dread in metroid dread is stronger, but it only happens when you're in the emmi zone. With fusion it lasts through the whole game
Yeah I know what you mean, when you’re playing fusion for the first time you have no idea when you’re going to run into s-ax again and it’s so nerve-wracking
5:48 Quick note, these extra story art pieces aren't actually Speedrun rewards. They're 100% completion rewards for each area, with all 8 having one and a bonus 9th for getting all of them. The speed clear rewards are just the game themed art pieces.
Nice analysis! Another neat way the game design helps instill dread is that unlike most games where Samus starts at her ship on the surface, this one puts her at the lowest part of the map with no easy way to get back.
One of the scariest things in the background story of this game is on the way to raven beack on hanuba 3 bird ships are docked in a docking station thing in the background. On the way back through hanuba to get to your ship the 3 bird ships aren't there anymore with no sign of damage around thier previous location. If one of those black goo birds pilot the ships out the planet and survive the explosion it puts the entire galaxy at risk. This is a theory by another UA-camr whose name I've forgotten but you should Google the metroid dread ship theory. It could make metroid 6 just as dread enducing your welcome buddy!
The issue with the E.M.M.I's is that they genuinely are not scary, they are just faceless annoying and repetitive insta-kill level hazards. The SA-X in Fusion was scary because you knew exactly what a fully powered up Samus was capable of, and it's that history that made it way more terrifying.
I think personally the Emmi are scary in how they cause tense scenarios in the Emmi zones. It's not necessarily horrifying, especially on later playthroughs, but it's exhilarating to just barely escape danger. Like some of my favourite examples are entering the zone and the Emmi is just THERE, in the vent and it instantly gives chase
Man I love Metroid, and you nailed it. I would have loved to have seen a bit more focus on the sound design, it did feel a bit brushed over and I feel like it’s arguably one of the most important parts of the design
I personally believe 01P means prototype. But regardless, this was a VERY interesting video that more or less summed up why Dread is my favourite Metroid. It feels downright horrifying the first time you play through no cheap jumpscares or anything a traditional horror game would do. It makes you feel uncomfortable and anxious with a constant lingering uneasy feeling.
I think a boss before fighting raven beak should have been a master EMMI that is stronger and doesn't stick to EMMI zones. The feeling of the creature following you out of the safe zone would have been terrifying and it will relentless chase you throughout the rest of the game.
The thing I find interesting is how quickly all that "dread" turned to annoyance for me. As soon as they taught me the parry and that I'd be running to a specific room to download a temporary beam that could kill these EMMIs all fear or terror dropped away and was replaced by irritation. It took a few playthroughs to let go of that negative feeling and just treat it like a video game so it wrapped around to being fun in the end (I do enjoy outrunning the EMMIs or kiting them in circles to get access to doors and I really like the timing game to blast off their face shield followed by a really tense attempt to sneak in a fully charge blast while the recoil) Like I feel still feel dread and unease when I have to wait for or run from the SA-X in Fusion, being able to inflict damage but never defeat it feels way different than being unable to deal any damage and just getting a win button later Any Dread I should've felt was drained away really fast, I approached Raven Beak with intrigue more than anything, followed by a huge amount of annoyance because his fight is reliant on the "Grabs" that all the bosses have. It quickly devolves from an actual battle between two warriors and just a Race to the Quick time event. None of the damage you do between phases actually matters (in fact if you choose not to engage any of the parries and grabs you can just run out of missiles without breaking his shield) so it felt like I was cheated out of everything Raven Beak built up.
The P in E.M.M.I -01P could stand for "practice" since its essentially a tutorial and you gain nothing from it after it's defeated
Is was confirmed to be prototype
Nah bro it’s for pancakes
U shure it dosent stand for perfect
That makes sense!

On a story level th SA-X is definitely scarier.

Emmi-01p just gives pants. But Ravenbeak took it.😂
Yeah, it’s supposed to give you a new pair of pants because you probably just soiled your current pair
Imagine Samus wearing jeans the whole game, that would have been amazing!

Five 2D Metroid games? You clearly don't know what you're talking about
There are 7 in total, but 2 are remakes so I didn’t count those. Only the originals.
