Very true! I haven't spoken about that very much in this series, but it's easy to forget how much developers likely assume that a player already possesses a certain level of video game literacy that they don't need to explain things in much detail, likely making some games a lot more difficult. Maybe that's something I'll get into more in a future video...
Well, no, that's not correct. That sentiment is not related to the portion of Hollow Knight seen in this video. On display here is a less common philosophy of game design where there are more subtle tutorials baked into the levels, with the purpose being that it's the most immersive experience. It's a design choice, and doesn't require the player to have any experience with video games.
Sorry but that's just a half truth, currently there's streamers with no platformer games background that can figure most of the basic things you can do In the game, a child can do it, an open minded adult can too (big emphasis on open minded)it's literally push the buttons on the control you hsve In your hands and see how it reflects on the screen..the problem it's expecting the médium provided you with all the answered from the start...it's like watching a movie waiting to being explained all the plot on The first 5 minutes, or just expecting movies and series to explain every single detail with words and bot images and nuances...you know...like anymore me who watched a movie at least one Time would know...
As someone who has many hundreds of hours in this game, it's such an eye-opener to watch someone struggle with navigating a world you know with the back of your hand. It's refreshing to see someone to not only don't understand the terrain but also don't understand the mechanics. There's so many mechanics that we gamers with years of experience take for granted that new gamers don't think about, like sprinting or as we can see in the playthrough, try to hit upwards or downwards, it's in the little details. Great video, we support tips for Ellie.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment, Alpha! Really appreciate it. It truly is fascinating. I don't have that many hours in Hollow Knight, but I picked up on some of what you mentioned. That's my favorite part about making this series, getting to see a new player learn and adapt to different games. I'll be continuing to give her tips! Thanks for the feedback :)
@@Wilson-108I was the head of data science and player psychology for one of the largest independent studios up until recently (what I'm doing now is similar but slightly harder to explain). This video is an absolute treasure. Players like Ellie who are willing to sit through this, learn, question, and basically, be studied, are so rare and hard to find but are so useful to developers and designers. Thank you both, I'll be forwarding this to lots of people.
It's so interesting to see stuff like that! I will note that Ellie couldn't believe that she didn't try holding it down quicker and definitely understood the concept, haha.
@ I think the simpler things are, the dumber we feel when we don’t get it on the first try 😭🥹 the best part about this video is that we’re not making fun of Ellie for not knowing!!! 🩵 I had a boyfriend once who used to call me dumb just for not getting gaming things right away, for not being quick enough etc. It’s never fun, I’ll tell you that much 😂😭
So true! For sure, I never want these videos to feel mean spirited!! I'll poke fun sometimes, but I commend Ellie for being willing to help me with these. She does a great job and I'm often impressed with what she pulls off. Sorry your boyfriend said that type of stuff to you, hopefully he's an ex-bf now!
This is exactly what happened when i ask my sister who seldom play video games to play test. She cant press two button at the same time. Must stand still before attacking.
That's very interesting, good observation! I haven't mentioned that yet, but you're absolutely right; less experienced gamers tend to stop moving before initiating an attack. Maybe that's something I'll note in future videos... Good luck on the development of your game, it looks really cool!
@@Neirdioneh, we like different things it’s fine to not have fun together but separately. I would never trade the current Hollow Knight for a noob friendly one.
Yep, gaming is like a subset skill of typing. People who aren't familiar with typing will often use a singular finger to press the keys and constantly look at the keyboard, while confident typers will use most of the hand and look much less. If each action you're doing requires a lot of brain power because it's not yet muscle memory it then becomes easy to hit the cap of simultaneous actions. Hell you can see some of this by handing a confident KB+M player a controller for the first time and telling them to play their favourite game with that instead. Having to use a thumb usually relegated to the spacebar to instead control the whole camera is a bit change, not to mention all the new keys you need to get accustomed to.
One very cool thing that a lot of players miss. Elder bug actually tells players where to go after exploring one area, he starts talking about places in the game that he's heard about. For example, upon exploring the Forgotten Crossroads a bit, he talks about Greenpath
That's awesome, I had no idea! Ellie is currently playing through another 5 hours of the game for a follow up video, I wonder if she'll pick up on that...
Props to Ellie for pushing through and doing so well! I love this series because, as Wilson says, sometimes as gamers we do take certain things for granted. It is very refreshing to see an unfamiliar take on games, so that it can possibly help future developers improve in ways we might never have thought. Love the vid, thank you Wils and Ellie!
I still remember how overwhelmingly difficult LoZ: Ocarina of Time was when it was first released, since there really hadn't been a game like it before. Learning and getting used to the controls and logic of the puzzles was a true challenge. There'd been 3D games before, but camera angles were never so important up until then, only coming up in rare one-off instances here and there.
So true! OoT was one of the first 3D games I ever played. It took me 5 years to beat it, as I would only do it when my cousin visited. I didn't feel confidently enough to play it without them. It remains one of my favorite games of all time :)
+1 for some tips to help Ellie progress. We are all cheering her on here anyway, and a few little hints to help improve are handy for anyone in a new game, regardless skill level IMO
Good to see you back, Kerbal! Really appreciate the feedback. That seems to be the general consensus, so I'll definitely try to help out when it makes sense. The next game is quite different from what we've done so far; I'm excited to see the reception...
Was not expecting such a high vocabulary for a video like this! Very good storytelling, by the way! I felt like I shared Ellie's fear and determination about fighting certain enemies.
Thank you so much, Dash! I looove leaning new words, so I try to sprinkle some into the videos, haha. I'm so happy you enjoyed the video. The next episode will feature some of Ellie's live commentary, which I'm really excited about. Let me know your thoughts if you get a chance to watch it!
My first thoughts when seeing this thumbnail: 'Hollow Knight? Really? Poor Ellie... What does this monster have in store for her next? Ghosts 'n' Goblins? Cuphead? Super Meat Boy?' 😅 For the record: Yes, I support tips for Ellie! Looking forward to listening to Ellie cussing out her torturer like a sailor!
Hahaha, I think the next game will be a bit easier for her (hopefully). Based on our first 2 hours of playtime today, I may be mistaken, but she seems to be getting her feet under her. That's very good to know, I appreciate the feedback! I think it'll be constructive to provide some help when it makes sense. Good to see you as always, Zorro!
@@dmytrosoboliev935 cuphead would still be extremely difficult.... Even the first run and gun level is hard for some experienced gamers... I've seen it with my own eyes.. lol
@@Wilson-108 Celeste is probably much more beginner friendly. I encourage its Assist Mode. That said, Celeste certainly hadn't been designed for beginners, either. Assist Mode had been added later, in an effort to bridge the experience/skill gap. (The options appear to be arranged in order of extremity, so I recommend using the top settings first.)
I loved this video because a lot of these first time play throughs for Hollow Knight is a very experienced streamer or gamer playing it. It kind of makes me feel like I’m really really bad at the video game, but seeing her go through the same struggles made me feel much more valid in my playing ability. Awesome video!
Thank you so much for the kind words, I'm really happy you enjoyed! I love to hear that seeing a less experienced gamer resonates with you, I hope others like you are getting something out of it too! I hope you'll join us for future videos :) we launched a new Hollow Knight episode today!
It’s often hard to notice privileges you have until they’re either stripped away, or you see someone or someplace that doesn’t have those privileges. The same can be said about skills. There’s lots of skills we have acquired across our lives to the point where we can’t even imagine what it would be like without them. That’s why it’s nice to see exactly that, since it always you to see things from a whole new perspective.
I couldn't agree more! I think that's part of what (hopefully) makes these videos interesting to watch (and interesting for me to make). I'm hoping it provides a new perspective for those of us who are already so well versed in video games. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave this comment!
Thanks so much for watching, everybody! Let me know your thoughts :) I just wanted to let you know that I’ve heard your feedback about getting Ellie’s audio into the videos. Beginning with the next entry, Ellie will be mic’ed up and her live audio will be incorporated into my narration. I’m excited to see what it will add to the series! Thanks again for watching and if you enjoyed yourself, a “like” on the video helps it spread to more people!
j think it would be fun to watch Ellie play deadcells its unlike anything she's played before to my knowledge it is a rogue like commonly known as the hardest rogue like ever. Thank you for making this awesome series.
Thank you so much for watching, Gixmos, and thank you for the suggestion! I love Dead Cells. That would be a great game for her to try, maybe we'll get to that one in the future :)
@@Wilson-108I’m sure you’ve heard this before but Outer Wilds would be amazing. It is a game that loses a lot if you don’t finish it, but would still be a fun play
I've been thinking about doing Outer Wilds! I've actually been playing through it myself, funnily enough. Thanks for throwing out that recommendation, Henry!
Terraria might be a nice game for this series The game tells the player surprisingly little, so it would be interesting to see how much Ellie can learn about the game on her own in her time playing it
This game excels at taking your hand and guiding you to the pinnacles of gamerhood. I had barely ever used a controller before this one (for games like limbo, or journey) and it got me all the way to besting P3 and doing all Steel Soul and all speedrun achievements. So good luck Ellie! Show them all :D :D
It really does! So cool to hear how much your skill grew while you played through HK. Ellie appreciates your kind comment! I hope you'll join us for more videos in the future :)
i love how you say "the only path past this boss is through it" for exactly one of the fights that you can skip to a degree xD (on the left wall above the gate is a breakable spot, you just have to hit it a couple of times and can skip him xD )
One thing I notice when watching people play Hollow Knight for the first time who aren't Metroidvania veterans is how rarely it occurs to them they can attack up or down, and almost no one attempts to pogo off spikes or enemies early on. Those were some of the first things I did in this game because I've just played so many games of this style that it seems natural, but people who don't play them often just don't realize it's a thing. Also so few players new to these style games think to look for hidden areas, which are EVERYWHERE in Hollow Knight.
That's a really great point! There were times where Ellie would attack upward, but I couldn't tell if it was an accident or not. I forgot to ask her about that. We're going to start recording a follow up episode tomorrow, so I'm curious how her play will evolve over another 5 hours...
This kind of videos is good when you hear the girlfriend's reactions. In the vids he makes, Ellie might not exist at all, and he just comment on his own gameplay.
This was my first metroidvania and I remember getting completely stuck at the bit in Greenpath where you have to break the vines to make the platforms drop, needed a friend to tell me what to do. If she got past this bit without help, then respect.
She did manage to! She tended to attack a lot to see how objects in the world would react, so I think she may have accidentally cut one of the vines and then understood what to do moving forward :)
@@Wilson-108the game hints at it somewhat subtly, as after the first stagger the wall becomes visibly cracked and dust falls. It’s not easy to see if you aren’t looking at it though, especially if you’re focused on the giant knight hitting you with a mallet.
Great video! Hollow Knight taught me so much patience and leveled up my skill in video games both similar to it and beyond. I love watching people tiptoe through their first time exploring, and I hope Ellie finishes it. :D
Thank you so much, Grizzly, I really appreciate it!! I think it taught a lot as a player, too. Ellie really enjoyed it and we're currently recording a follow up video!
Wow, thank you so much for saying this!! Comments like these truly mean so much to me :) Welcome aboard! Hope to see you around for future videos; hopefully we can keep growing that subscriber count ;)
this is so interesting! hollow knight was also my first exposure to metrodvanias so I had a lot of the same struggles Ellie had at first. it ended up being one of my top three favourite games.
So glad you enjoyed it! We're filming a follow up video right, so I'm hoping that Ellie will grow to enjoy it even more with another 5 hours under her belt :) What are your other two favorite games?
@@Wilson-108 oooh, I'm looking forward to that! my other two favourites are journey and breath of the wild (also, please pass massive kudos to Ellie for playing souls- I love HK but I could never!)
My gf and I got into Hollow Knight together when it came out; neither of us was much for those kinds of games at the time. We both got better at it simultaneously, VERY slowly. Eventually we beat the game and it was honestly one of the most fun journeys within a relationship that I've ever experienced. SUCH a rewarding game to play, I'm glad y'all had fun with it too!
That is so awesome, thanks for sharing this! I love hearing stories from people who've been able to bond more with their partner through a game. Hope you guys are finding new games to enjoy together :)
I approve of tips like the ones you gave here and in bloodborne. Teach her to learn basically. The realization that a boss only has so many moves and that you can react "correctly" to each is imo an amazing gaming realization in general. The idea that a boss or situation can be "solved."
I'm glad to hear that, thank you for the feedback! It is! When you realize that each boss is essentially a moving puzzle, you can really view it differently. I think a 2D game helps to make that particularly evident. Thanks for checking out the videos, I hope you'll join us for more :)
Give Ellie a chance at a game that isn’t that difficult but not mindlessly easy either. For example, I’d like to see how she would deal with Super Mario Galaxy.
I appreciate the suggestion! I agree, I don't always want to throw super punishing games at her. I think we can see a lot of interesting things out of different kind of experiences. Sadly, the next game won't be Galaxy, but it will be something very different from what we've done thus far. Would love to know your thoughts if you end up checking it out! Also, mad respect for a fellow Wii U owner ;)
@ Thank you! Your channel is pretty good. I enjoy it so I will most likely be watching your next video. Also, another idea would be to make her play a multiplayer game where she gets to play with you, it could be cool. Also, nice to see that some people actually enjoy the Wii U!
@@wiiu-theunderratedconsole7569 Thank very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! That's a great idea, definitely something we may do in the future! Oh yeah, gotta love the underrated Wii U :)
Thanks so much for the kind words and recommendation, Aaron!! I *love* Tunic, that would be a really fun game for us to cover in the future. Stay tuned :)
Another goated video Wilson 👌 One thing in particular I really appreciate about this series is not only getting this fresh view to these games that so far are all absolute dear to my heart from the perspective of not only a newer gamer (Ellie) and how she progresses, but also your analysis on how so many mechanics and aspects of these games we take for granted as more experienced gamers. I also do like you giving tips in the way you have so far, not fully guiding but giving prompts to help but also let Ellie figure out what needs to be done herself in the end. It’s really interesting to watch and I hope you continue this series!
Thanks so much Heisenberg, great to see you back!! *So* appreciate that feedback. I love Ellie's gameplay and journey taking center stage, but I also want to make sure that I really dig into what I'm seeing instead of it turning into a simple regurgitation of what happened over the 5 hours. Hoping to keep threading that needle, especially as we phase in her live audio. Duly noted regarding the tips, that seems to be the general consensus! I'll most definitely be continuing the series! They're a ton of fun to make and people really seem to be digging them. We're gonna be taking a pretty big departure for the next game, so I'm curious to hear what people think about it... :)
5:58 ... I think you're the first person I've seen who calls this Gruz and not Gruz Mother. Which... makes sense, because of the formatting, but it's interesting that I've never heard it before
This is noteworthy to see that even the simplest of mechanics can catch people who don't play games off guard, it is similar to whenever my parents or grandparents attempt any videogame
@@Wilson-108 yes, in ur vid its so painful watching the combat lol. I noticed that newcomers can’t combine attacks effectively, for example, in this vid there is virtually no upslashing or down slashing, which combined the stick with the attack button. I also noticed few uses of vengeful spirit which is interedting to see, I think there are 2 extremes. Always using the new ability like vengeful spirit, or never using it at all
@@siroglethorpe311 Great observations! Definitely, combat seems to be a big struggle for newcomers. I'm publishing another Hollow Knight episode tomorrow, would love to hear your thoughts on it!
Really cool video! I’m currently playing 9 Sols, which is my very first metroidvania, and I’m loving it a lot. It’s interesting to see how 9 Sols is both similar and different to hollow knight.
Thank you so much!! I've heard a lot of comments recommending Nine Sols, it sounds like I need to check it out. Maybe we can feature it on a future episode :)
Answering your question around 14:30 - I don't think is a bad thing giving her some tips and some help during the gameplay. This avoids the feeling of being alone on this new hobbie and boosts her confidence. Even though I love videogames, I am awlful at playing them, I don't own/play on a console or PC for years, so I just watched gameplays until my boyfriends bought a PC. Its frustrating not be aple to do specifcs moviments, get lost all the time or not undertanding some mechanics. I would have just droped the games if I was doing it by myself, so my boyfriend plays with me. Loved the video! Super funny and interesting to watch
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment! I'm really happy you enjoyed :) Totally agree, I'll definitely try to provide Ellie with some tips a little more often as we create more episodes. I hope you'll let me know what you think of them!
It really is crazy how much previous experiences with games can change one's first playthrough. I don't think I reached a death count of 62 until I started trying the dream rematches of bosses like False Knight or Soul Master; meanwhile she reached that number within the first two areas of the game.
It really is! I think another huge component is how old you were when you started playing games. I was super young, so much of that "gaming instinct" and quick reflexes are just completely ingrained in me.
Love Ellie’s resilience in the face of challenge! My wife is a skilled gamer but gets frustrated and gives up much more easily. Whenever she watches me play Hollow Knight she’s bewildered by how I keep coming back to bosses after getting killed.
Thank you for the kind comment! I'm right there with you :) One thing that's really interesting about making these videos is that it causes Ellie to play longer than she would otherwise. She likely would have quit some of these games already, but she keeps pushing so we can reach the full 5 hours. I hope it'll lead to her really enjoying some games that she might have written off otherwise!
She's very interested in playing some more! We may do a follow up video in the future. Let me know if there are any other games you'd like to see us cover :)
@@Wilson-108 I would love to hear her reaction while playing and also she should check out Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisp, Gris, Neva, Cuphead... If you make some more THK playthrough videos I wouldn't be mad lol
I think the tips help a lot! I for one desperately needed a walkthrough for basically everything in dark souls 1, and while hollow knight is certainly less confusing, I feel that most tips don't deprive the player of any satisfaction, as the player still needs to perform the correct actions to succeed. Secondly, PLEASE do Celeste next. I think it's absolutely perfect for a series like this.
Thank you very much for that feedback, Axiom! People seem to agree, so I'm trying to incorporate some tips in the game we're playing next. Sadly, it's not Celeste, *but* that is a fantastic suggestion. I absolutely adore that game. We will definitely do that one in the future! I really want to see how Ellie would approach a platformer. Stay tuned! :)
The fact that hollow knight is a nonlinear game makes it hard to get through on your first playthrough without a guide of sorts. Its also a breath of fresh air to see a hollow knight video that isn't from a hollow knight specific creator. Like, its fun to see when people have to explain the game because their audience hasnt seen this game that much. Knowing what i know now, i had fun looking at how she moved through the map, how she went through the game in the 'incorrect' order for her skill set. I have a lazer focused path when going through HK myself due to knowing exactly where i am in Hallownest. One of the biggest things was her attempts to get wayward compass, i know the rooms im in even without the map. The way the terminology is used, improper terms like calling Gruz Mother 'Grooz' or your Shade 'Spirit', pretty entertaining False Knight is within an experienced player's first 10 minutes of play on a new file, pretty fun
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to leave these kind words!! I can't tell you how much these types of comments mean to me :) Hope to see you around for future videos!
The part where she has to keep farming for geo and losing it all to dying reminds me of the time I was farming like crazy for an item that was 1800 geo and I lost it trying to jump over an enemy. Died before getting my soul back and lost over 1500 collected. Broke my heart
The way you described the false knight fight is exactly right. A good boss fight should feel like a lethal dance of sorts, and in Hollow Kniht there is no boss that exemplifies this better for me than Nightmare King Grimm. Easily one of the best turbo hard bosses I've ever seen. Up there with Armstrong (MGR), Isshin (Sekiro) and Yukari (Perfect Cherry Blossom). The kind of fight that kicks your ass to hell and back and makes you like it, and when it finally clicks it makes the whole fight feel awesome.
Glad that analogy resonated with you! I think a dance is the perfect description. For sure, Hollow Knight has come killer fights. Few things in video games feel more satisfying than toppling a really difficult boss. Doesn't get much better than that. Thanks for watching, I hope you dug the video!
It's fun that you mention how much a break can help you learn. It's something of a meme in the Sekiro community that sleeping is the single best strat for practicing bosses, because it happens quite frequently that someone spends hours on a boss with no success, only to beat them in like 1 or 2 tries after they've slept. Rest is not only important for focus, but for learning as well.
I didn't realize that was a part of the Skeiro zeitgeist; that's really interesting to hear. It's so fascinating what a break and rest can do, which even carries to other disciplines. When I'm trying to learn some chord or riff on the guitar, often times, the best thing I can do is just walk away and come back to it later. Fascinating stuff!
This came out of nowhere but it's a nice surprise. This is the game that opened my eyes to a part of the industry that I and many others neglected for too long. It's amazing to see a game like this captivate even those who are "new" to gaming. Congrats to Ellie for her amazing progress and I hope she can keep some enthusiasm to experience this (and other games) until their very end.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! Ellie really enjoyed this game and I think would be very interested in continuing it, which we may do for another video. Let me know if there are other games you'd like to see us cover :)
So you are passing the responsibility for Ellie suffering to others now, that's pretty unfair. Also not a easy task, I would need to pick an Indie game, that's similar to Hollow Knight and Fromsoftware Souls when it comes to expecting players to find answers by themselves but still "easy" to play. But, I actually may know the perfect game, since finding the answers by yourself is pretty much what that game is about. Tunic, I think that would be a really interesting experience for her.
Ironically, The only way past this boss is not through it, haha! It blew my mind when I watched a speed runner just break the wall with the gate in the boss room and run away.
I had no idea that was possible until I read the comments on this video, haha! I love stuff like that, such a cool easter egg. Thanks for checking out the video, Ben!
Right?? Such a cool process to see someone less experienced play and figure out how to navigate a particular game. Turns out, I take quite a bit for granted!
Glad to hear she enjoyed the game and her time with it! Seeing someone go through it for the first time has me downloading it again to play through on a fresh file 😂
She really liked it! It's her favorite game that she's played for the series thus far. I love to hear that it inspired a replay for you. Honestly, it made me want to replay it too!
i love so much this kind of video. I played Grounded with my ex-girlfriend. She didn't understood that she could move the camera with the mouse and was ending up "stuck" in a really "not usefull" camera angle. I took this so much for granted that i forgot this is something we have to learn. and most of the time, this kind of game dont have "tutorial" for this really common "video game grammar"
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, camera control seems to be the single most difficult thing for people to wrap their heads around if they don't regularly play video games. It comes to naturally to us gamers, but man does it take a lot of practice for the layperson!
Hey, thank you so much Austin! I really appreciate the kind words. I couldn't agree more; Hollow Knight is fantastic. Let me know if there are any other games you'd be interested in seeing us cover!
This isn’t the first kind of video like this I have seen but it was quite interesting to see how an inexperienced gamer would miss walls that to someone who has played many games like me would instantly think look suspicious and try to interact with.
That is really interesting! I'm noticing that more experienced gamers just have a tendency to explore and experiment more. My instincts immediately compel to hit a weird looking wall, haha. We'll see if Ellie develops that sense over time...
This comment might not mean much to you, but I wanted to let you know that I found this video about 4-5 hours ago and I've went and watched a bunch of your videos since. Your videos are so rejuvenating and actually make me interested in games again. Keep up the great content and I look forward to your growth over the next year! Thanks for making these videos!
Wow, this comment means so much to me!! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this. It's easy to get lost in the numbers and stats when making a UA-cam channel, but hearing feedback like reminds me why I enjoy sharing my love of games so much. I am so thrilled that you're enjoying the videos and I hope you'll come back to share your thoughts on future vids! Next one should be going live on Sunday :)
Grats to Ellie on beating False Knight. She's a real trooper to endure 62 deaths and keep trucking. Most new gamers would have gotten frustrated and quit. I know I got annoyed with HK and walked away for a while, and I only died maybe 4 or 5. (TBF, I was lost, which is another sentiment she could empathize with.)
I just read this comment to Ellie and she really appreciated it! She really is, her commitment is very impressive. I think we're going to film a rematch video with another 5 hours of Hollow Knight soon; I hope to see you around for that one!
Man, what an interesting video. I'd love to actually see more of Ellie playing Hollow Knight!! Curious to see her fight Hornet and discover other new areas
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! We're actually going to be filming a "rematch" video where Ellie plays 5 more hours of Hollow Knight soon (assuming it wins the poll on my channel), so stay tuned! Let me know if there are any other games you'd like to see us cover!
Many of us take for granted that we probably started with 2D games before going on to something more complicated. It makes me wonder if Ellie would have done better in the 3D games if she had gotten more experience with simpler 2D mechanics first. The welcoming, cutesy, cartoon art style doesn't hurt either. As far as giving her tips goes, I think it would be okay as long as they stay very general and are very few and far between.
I think you may on to something there! If I could start over, I think I may have changed the order in which Ellie played the games we've covered so far. I'm going to think more about the order of things in the future. Thank you for that input, Jack, that's the plan!
Ah yes, another social experiment with the souls genre. Love these. I like "What it's like to live with" series by Razbuten. Looking forward to see where this series goes. Capturing Ellies emotion through a mic would add a lot to these videos. Just a tip. Look up Razbuten's videos to get the idea. Good luck with your channel. Looks like you blew up.
So glad you dug it and I love Razbuten! A big inspiration for my channel, for sure. Starting with the next video, Ellie's audio will be included! I'm editing it currently and you're right, her reactions add a whole 'nother layer. The game is very different, so I'm excited to see what people think about it. Let me know if there are other games you'd like to see us cover. And thank you so much! The channel growth has been incredibly exciting. Hopefully we can keep it going :)
Thank you so much, Beela!! Really appreciate that :) Let me know what other games you'd like to see us cover! Hope to see you around in the comments of future videos!
HK is one of the first computer games I played, and it took me a while to figure out the Stag worked. After you pay, the door opens, and I was very confused why I couldnt enter the room I had payed for. I didnt even think I had to use my nail on the bell lmao
Stuff like that can be confusing to figure out! Ellie picked it up quickly, but it just as easily could have left her stumped for a while. It's interesting to see how small things like that just don't click for some people. I've had many moments like that, myself :)
Eyyy the saga continues! :D Good luck, Ellie! I've only played maybe an hour or two of this game. It's on my "to-do" list, I swear... I mean I almost HAVE to play more of it - I don't think I've ever heard of a platformer that's had such unanimously glowing reviews as Hollow Knight. Maybe Celeste, but this seems more popular and accessible. Plus, the art style is so cute in this game haha. Edit: I agree with your assessment RE the more aggressive style of play being more natural to pick up - I was thinking that when Ellie picked up the 2H weapons in Dark Souls or Bloodborne and they seemed more fluid with her style of combat than the sword+shield, I thought "if she was playing any games other than these, which almost go out of their way to punish over-aggressive combat styles, I think her strategies would be working out much better for her". Edit2: Regarding giving tips.. I think definitely can be a good idea - in this context the result was the desired one in that you helped sort of smooth out some of the frustrating parts of the gameplay without directing her actions a whole lot - but of course there's that limit we know all to well, of where the "smoothing out" starts to just happen for minor frustrations and/or easter eggs and this can have the undesired effect of removing the player's agency and satisfaction for overcoming challenges. But I don't know... you seem to be the sort to employ discretion, so I think for applications like this it's even preferable to saying nothing because it seems like it facilitated her in enjoying the game even more and personally I don't see any more valuable pursuit in gaming than that. Edit3: OOF the end of hour four is sooo rough, I felt that. The amount of times I've been panicking and trying to recover 100,000+ blood echoes (it was over 360k one time) in Bloodborne and then done something dumb like walked backwards off a cliff or just die to the dogs or something... literally have made myself cry at times with that frustration lol.
Eyy so glad to see you back, Luke! You should *definitely* jump into Hollow Knight when you can find the time, it's a fantastic game and I bet you'd dig it. Funnily enough, I bounced off of it when I first tried it, but totally game around a couple months later. Yup, totally! I was thinking the exact same thing. And honestly, that tends to be my play style often times, as well. The next game also rewards a more aggressive play style, generally, so I'm hoping she'll manage well with that. I appreciate the feedback! I definitely think there are moments where it will make more sense than others to provide some guidance. I want her to get the most out of the 5 hours without losing the joy of discovery, and without the videos losing the predicate of truly studying how a game and player communicate. So rough! And I actually encouraged her to check out the new ability before returning to the surface immediately after defeating the boss, which is what she wanted to do (I didn't remember that she'd be put in harm's way). That was a big lesson for me to keep my mouth shut 95% of the time, haha. Thanks for watching and leaving such a great comment!
17:12 "The only Way past this boss, was through it", well, yes and no, I used to speedrun this game from time to time, as it is my all time favorite game. Not sure if u are aware, but after the first cycle the wood on the left side breaks. Meaning after 1st cycle u can break the left wall, escape the fight and come back later when you are stronger :D
17:13 "the only way past this boss was through it." isn't technically true, but it's pretty rare. I don't know if somebody else has commented this already, but there's actually a neat way to skip fighting the False Knight! Part way through the fight you can make him break down that left gate for you to escape through if he's too tough. Loved the video!
I have received some other comments speaking to that easter egg, I had no clue! Such a cool little addition, I'll have to try it out for myself if I ever replay the game. Thank you so much, Scott! I hope you'll join us for future videos :)
1:50 Interesting...I'd also hold down the button longer to jump higher, but I usually don't play plattformers. So either I still play enough to have that embedded in my instincts, or it might stem from my C64 days?
Maybe you stored it for all that time and it's like riding a bike! To be fair, Ellie felt silly afterwards and didn't know why it took her as long as it did to try that, haha
@@Wilson-108 Fun development: Long press on the "reload" key in Satisfactory made me feel silly as well, yesterday. Story: I tried everything to change the ammo type for the rebar gun: shift-, ctrl-, left-, right-, middle- clicking and -dragging between rebar gun, ammo display, inventory and hand slot and nothing worked. For hours and days I was settling with putting all unwanted ammo types on the ground and re-equipping the rebar gun with only the wanted ammo type in the inventory. And then grabbing the other ammo again. And I swore to myself, that one day, when the most grave need to change ammo would arise, that then, I would google it! And it arrived! And I googled it! And it was glorious! It was revealed to me, by the merciful power of the interwebs, among an angel's choir and a lot of golden light beams, that I~ had to effing long press the reload key and then choose the ammo type on the radial menu incarnate. . . . Well, to my defense: I wasn't using the reload key at all. You can also reload by just pressing LMB, which didn't trigger the ammo menu on long press, of course, because it's also the fire key. Which is convenient for a gun with a mag size of 1. How in tartarus was I supposed to know?! The fact that an article like this exists, whose sole purpose it is to tell you about long press for ammo change surely absolves me? Right? And also: I hate radial menus! Because the only consoles I touch are far older than that..
A fun shooter game she could play is plants vs zombies garden war fare 2 it gives the option to play with bots so there’s no pressure and u can tweak the difficulty as u please!
Thanks very much for the recommendation! That series has always looked fun, but I've only ever played vanilla PvZ. Maybe we can get to this one in a future video!
I think giving Ellie tips is cool, just don't over do it cause backseaters can ruin a game imo. It's a lot more rewarding to figure it out on your own, but playing hollow knight as probably your first platformer/metroidvania is rough without knowing basics from simpler platformers like mario so general tips to catch her up on those universal mechanics like holding the jump button = higher jump is good or when she just really needs help. Great video, going to watch the others soon!
Thank so much for the feedback! Definitely, I think too many tips would really take away from what makes these videos cool, so I'll work to thread the needle as best I can. I definitely don't want to start back seating, haha. So glad you dug it! Let me know if you have thoughts on the others. Hope to see you around for future videos :)
As a self-labeled "fake gamer girl" this was so validating to watch. I had almost the exact same struggles when I started Hollow Knight, and usually spend 40-60 attempts on each boss. (Shoutout to Lost Kin for being easy, that's my only sub-20.) I've also experienced the utter despair of losing all my geo.... Once I dropped 5k.
The time it takes to farm Geo is definitely one of the more stressful parts of this game for new players. Even someone such as myself who has beat the game many times, if I lose my geo, so much as once, god forbid twice; I feel like I've been set back tremendously. It takes about 70,000 geo if you want to buy everything in the game. And the highest geo dropping farmable mob only gives 80, with boosts. So to get enough geo to purchase it all, without mindlessly farming, requires you to be vigilant. Kill everything you see throughout your playthrough and lose nothing.
Wow, I had no idea that was the cost to buy everything! That's a ton of Geo. Losing currency in big quantities has to be one of the worst feelings in gaming.
@@Wilson-108 yes, at first it is. It's mainly the combat, and parry system that is hard at first, but once you get that down, it is so satisfying. I'm STILL on the end boss..she has three phases, and I can get to the last phase..been on her for awhile, but it is such a fun game to play. Definitely better combat then Hollow Knight. I think you'd like it
For real, it's confusing! We're going to make another Hollow Knight video soon, so I'm curious to see how Ellie handles a more wide open world as she continues further into the game...
I love how prevalent the idea of Estus is, I have actually never played the explicit Dark Souls games, I've tried one once didn't like the feel but I love the genre and adjacent games. Even I call a healing mechanic thats always available but has limited uses and recharged somehow "Estus"
That really is interesting, isn't it? It truly remarkable just how much Dark Souls has penetrated the gaming zeitgeist since it released, from the terminology we invoke, to other games implementing similar mechanics. Thanks for watching the video, Daniel!
As someone who had practically no navigational experience during my first play through (I was pretty young and my only platformer experiences thus far were mega man 1-6) hollow knight was absolutely brutal for me, I think ellie had a much better time than I did until i started watching tutorials. I love how a player's background effects their experiences with different games, as far as combat I found the early game as well as grim, and bosses around the same difficulty to be very manageable. I think this is due to me beating mega man 2 previously though. Currently replaying hollow knight, and after playing many more games throughout the years, I'm having a much better time navagating even with little to no memory of the map :D ain't that something
Well I'm sure Ellie will appreciate seeing this comment! Me too, it's so interesting, isn't it? I'm sure Mega Man was incredibly formative. There's so much valuable insight to take away from those games. Glad to hear you're digging back into the game! Seeing Ellie play has made me want to play through it again, haha. Thanks for checking out the video, Atlus! Hope you'll join us for more in the future :)
Fun fact! When I started Hollow Knight, I was SURE that The False Knight was the HARDEST BOSS IN THE GAME because I couldn't beat him for the life of me. I very quickly learned that I was VERY wrong. (Nightmare King Grimm was easiest and Cruz Mother was hardest.)
Haha, can't get a much better compliment than that! Thanks for taking the time to comment on the videos, Bruno. Hope you'll let me know your thoughts on the next one :)
Another great video! When will the streak end?! At the end of this series it would be neat to hear Ellie's top ranked games and genres that she has experienced. As always, looking forward to the next upload. If we don't get another upload before Christmas, well, Merry Christmas to you Wilson and Ellie!
Thank you so much my dude!! That's a great idea, I definitely want to have a running list of Ellie's rankings. Oh you bet, next episode should be live on Sunday! (I lost my job a couple of weeks ago, so I've got a lot of free time to pump out the videos, haha). Merry Christmas to you as well, my friend!
I remember the first time I played hollow knight😂 those platforms gave me such problems. It was my brother who had to tell me that pressing on the jump button longer made us jump higher! ....he also quickly gave me a remote to play with and might I add not playing on the keyboard was a game changer
It sounds like you and Ellie had some similar experiences! I'm a die hard controller user, so I would also much prefer to be using one of those, haha. Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed the video!
I like when you give Ellie tips! Just for the viewers’ sake, by no means out of personal interest or anything
I fully agree-“with tips” would make me want to play!😊
Hmmm, the channel name sounds suspicious...
😂
Hmmm okay thank you for the feedback, "Ellie"...
And so it shall be done!
Yeah, something seems familiar...
This is a great illustration of how much modern games rely on players having experience with years of playing similar games.
Very true! I haven't spoken about that very much in this series, but it's easy to forget how much developers likely assume that a player already possesses a certain level of video game literacy that they don't need to explain things in much detail, likely making some games a lot more difficult. Maybe that's something I'll get into more in a future video...
@@Wilson-108 great topic, and great channel 👍
Well, no, that's not correct. That sentiment is not related to the portion of Hollow Knight seen in this video. On display here is a less common philosophy of game design where there are more subtle tutorials baked into the levels, with the purpose being that it's the most immersive experience. It's a design choice, and doesn't require the player to have any experience with video games.
I did not need experience to figure out that holding the jump button extends the jump when I was four playing Mario for the first time on the NES...
This video reminded me of how I was as a beginner, something I've forgotten after playing for so long
It reminded me of my first playthrough. I died so many times to the roly pollies as well
I like your channel name :)
I'm not prone to being lost, I'm just navigationally challenged
Well said, I'm going to start describing myself that way :)
Damn…I never realized that you’d get stuck on something so simple (the jumping at the beginning) purely out of lack of experience.
I was stuck on the jumping for so long lol
Happens to the best of us :)
I am a simple man. I See Hollow Knight, i click
That's my kinda guy :)
Let me know if there are other games you'd like to see us cover!
@@Wilson-108Would Love to see Nine sols at some Point. Also a really hard 2D Game, but other then Hollow Knight, it is more linear :)
A few people have suggested that one! I've actually been curious to play it myself, so I'll keep on eye on that one :)
I shouldn't criticize your sister, should I? I would be much worse if I never took up games in childhood.
@@justaboywithoutabrain3010 Everyone plays different, We just have fun together :)
Thank you so much, Noble!! Appreciate the feedback, as always my dude :)
Many more to come!
Something about the description and the cadence somehow feels like a fun nature documentary
That's so funny, you're the third person to mentioned that in the last few days! I like that comparison :)
Cuphead? Super Meat Boy?' 😅
For the record: Yes, I support tips for Ellie!
Cuphead would be few times easier, than GnG or Super Meatboy. Especially with an easy mode fights
@@dmytrosoboliev935 cuphead would still be extremely difficult.... Even the first run and gun level is hard for some experienced gamers... I've seen it with my own eyes.. lol
Ooh, Meatboy would be a good one...
Let me know your thoughts :)
I just wanted to let you know that I’ve heard your feedback about getting Ellie’s audio into the videos.
Terraria might be a nice game for this series
The game tells the player surprisingly little, so it would be interesting to see how much Ellie can learn about the game on her own in her time playing it
about you giving ellie tips, I'm totally on board with you helping her get out of a situation she's stuck for a while!
10-4, I agree, thanks for the feedback!
Walking into the boss was killing me! Glad you gave that tip lol.
Haha, she definitely got it down once she the patented Wilson108 tip!
i love how you say "the only path past this boss is through it" for exactly one of the fights that you can skip to a degree xD (on the left wall above the gate is a breakable spot, you just have to hit it a couple of times and can skip him xD )
LOL right? A couple people have pointed that out to me, I had no idea! You learn something new everyday, I suppose :')
I agree! Her audio will be in all of the videos moving forward. The next one should go live on Sunday, let me know your thoughts if you watch it!

17:15 Through it is not the only way. You can break the wall on left side of the arena and just walk past the false knight.
That's wild, I had no idea! Good to know for next time :)
@@Wilson-108the game hints at it somewhat subtly, as after the first stagger the wall becomes visibly cracked and dust falls. It’s not easy to see if you aren’t looking at it though, especially if you’re focused on the giant knight hitting you with a mallet.
Love that subtlety, that's a super cool detail
Great video! Hollow Knight taught me so much patience and leveled up my skill in video games both similar to it and beyond. I love watching people tiptoe through their first time exploring, and I hope Ellie finishes it. :D
Thank you so much, Grizzly, I really appreciate it!! I think it taught a lot as a player, too. Ellie really enjoyed it and we're currently recording a follow up video!
How are you not famous these videos are so high quality u earned urself a sub

*You* sir are the GOAT. The platinum trophy, if you will...
this is so interesting! hollow knight was also my first exposure to metrodvanias so I had a lot of the same struggles Ellie had at first. it ended up being one of my top three favourite games.
Ooh very nice, two great choices. I absolutely will, I don't blame you!!

Do Tunic next! I'd love to see a beginner's experience with Tunic, and your commentary style is quite good.
Thanks so much for the kind words and recommendation, Aaron!! I *love* Tunic, that would be a really fun game for us to cover in the future. Stay tuned :)
Another goated video Wilson 👌
One thing in particular I really appreciate about this series is not only getting this fresh view to these games that so far are all absolute dear to my heart from the perspective of not only a newer gamer (Ellie) and how she progresses, but also your analysis on how so many mechanics and aspects of these games we take for granted as more experienced gamers.
Saw Hollow Knight and Subscribed instantly. Btw thats a nice idea you have. More power to you.
Thank you so much, Abubakar!! Welcome aboard :)
Let me know if there are any other games you'd like to see us cover!

... I think you're the first person I've seen who calls this Gruz and not Gruz Mother. Which... makes sense, because of the formatting, but it's interesting that I've never heard it before
Interesting, that's funny! I like to stand out, haha
this gives me wildlife documentary vibes LMAO
Oh my god that's hilarious. I hadn't thought of that but I see the parallels LOL
"Lands in Dirtmouth"
"City of Tears OST plays"
Come oooooooooooooon xDD
Haha, I was gonna play the Dirtmouth track but she left so quickly that I figured I'd just use a longer track that didn't feel so somber!
This is noteworthy to see that even the simplest of mechanics can catch people who don't play games off guard, it is similar to whenever my parents or grandparents attempt any videogame
It really is like another language. So interesting to see someone learn it before your eyes!
@ awesome sauce
Really cool video! I’m currently playing 9 Sols, which is my very first metroidvania, and I’m loving it a lot. It’s interesting to see how 9 Sols is both similar and different to hollow knight.
Thank you so much!! I've heard a lot of comments recommending Nine Sols, it sounds like I need to check it out. Maybe we can feature it on a future episode :)
I’ve played Hollow Knight and just started Nine Sols and I’m still struggling 🥲
Sounds like it's a real challenge! I'm gonna have to get it :)
I'm really happy you enjoyed :)
Totally agree, I'll definitely try to provide Ellie with some tips a little more often as we create more episodes.
I'm right there with you :)
One thing that's really interesting about making these videos is that it causes Ellie to play longer than she would otherwise. She likely would have quit some of these games already, but she keeps pushing so we can reach the full 5 hours. I hope it'll lead to her really enjoying some games that she might have written off otherwise!
she seemed to have trouble with flying enemies because she never upslashed
Yup, wasn't until part 2 that she started to incorporate that!
I'm interested if she decided to continue playing. THK is one of my favourite games!
*Great* recommendations, I bet we can get to some of these in the future! Stay tuned :)
I had my girlfriend who basically never plays video games try this last month and she no lifed it for a week.
That's awesome! It's such a cool game, very easy to get sucked into, haha
8:40 THANK YOU FOR JUSTIFYING MY 12 HOUR WALK AROUND THE CITY OF TEARS
Haha, you're not alone!!
The way the terminology is used, improper terms like calling Gruz Mother 'Grooz' or your Shade 'Spirit', pretty entertaining
False Knight is within an experienced player's first 10 minutes of play on a new file, pretty fun
This is exactly how it felt watching my friend's little brother play the game
Haha, hopefully they enjoyed it!
Cant believe you only have 3k subs, this is high quality, great job!
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to leave these kind words!! I can't tell you how much these types of comments mean to me :)
Hope to see you around for future videos!
The part where she has to keep farming for geo and losing it all to dying reminds me of the time I was farming like crazy for an item that was 1800 geo and I lost it trying to jump over an enemy. Died before getting my soul back and lost over 1500 collected. Broke my heart
Oh nooo that is terrible. At least it makes for a memorable moment! Few things are more painful than losing everything you've been farming
Someone else actually actually suggested Tunic today, as well! I think that's a great recommendation, I think we'll likely do that one in the future.
12:17 The first moment that the game changes for every Hollow Knight player.
Ohhh yeah, total game changer!
>Enters Dirtmouth
>City of Tears music starts playing
I am confusion
Haha, I almost played the Dirtmouth track but it was so short and somber that it didn't really work for the video!
It's so fascinating seeing someone learn what to you seems like "the obvious". Really shows how we take certain skills for granted.
The first time I was in kings pass it took me 10 minutes to realise how he jumping mechanics work
You're not alone! It's a great section to get used to the mechanics :)
i love so much this kind of video.
In a way, Soulsborne games are also 2D, since they don't have much verticality. Especially in combat.
That's an interesting way to view them, I hadn't thought of that!
@@Wilson-108 Sekiro changed that. It took me some time to get used to it.
@@AkiRa22084 Ahh I see, I still need to play Sekiro!
Cool video/channel man, subscribed 👍 also I love Hollow Knight, such a wonderful game that kind of just exists over on its own. So glad I played it
Hey, thank you so much Austin!
Beware!
Not exploring each room throughly
May be your doom
That is saint advice!
Fascinating how she doesn't destroy everything in sight
Yeah, she did it a fair bit, but I was just constantly destroying everything haha
From the title alone I thought this was a comparison between your girlfriend and Hollow Knight and a pros and cons list of the two 🤣
Lol, maybe I should make that video next!
Sometimes I think that I’m not great at the game but then I remember that I can finish what Ellie did in five hours in about 10 minutes
Haha, gotta start somewhere!
Man I love your analysis videos, I especially loved Ellie’s performance in bloodborne!!
Thank you so much, Beela!! Really appreciate that :)
Let me know what other games you'd like to see us cover! Hope to see you around in the comments of future videos!
I just can’t with you calling gruz mother gruz 😭
Haha, I've got a lot to learn!
Good luck, Ellie!
I did not know that, such a cool hidden detail! That seems like something almost tailer made for speedrunners, which is awesome to see :)
It was revealed to me, by the merciful power of the interwebs, among an angel's choir and a lot of golden light beams, that
I~
had to effing long press the reload key and then choose the ammo type on the radial menu incarnate.
.
.
My thoughts on giving Ellie tips, is to ask her! When she wants a tip or not give her the agency to make that decision 🙌
That's a really good idea, Danny, thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to try to implement that going forward :)
Hope to see you around for future videos :)
i loved this video - i suggest playing Another Crab's Treasure!!
Ooh that would be a really good one, thank you for the recommendation!
I'm very happy to hear that, thanks for watching, Amanda! Oh man, 5k must have been *brutal*
Fun fact: It's actually possible to break the left wall during the fight against False Knight and skip him.
I'd never realized that before seeing the comments to this video! That's really cool, I'll have to try that sometime.
Ellie is becoming a beast!
I'm looking forward to the next video in the series! I wonder what the game is gonna be🤔
For real, she's improved so much!
Taking a hard swerve for the next game, I'm excited to see what people think...
Next experiment: Nine Sols
That game looks so cool! I'm actually hoping to play that game myself. Was it as hard as people say it is?
@@Wilson-108
yeah, it's pretty brutal. Especially early on, when you don't have as many abilities, hp, and general game knowledge
Sounds very intriguing...
I think you'd like it
@@ChrisKliewer Very cool, thanks for sharing your thoughts! I'm gonna have to play it at some point.
I've beaten this game several times. Still get lost constantly. Still need to look at the map often. The struggle is real.
For real, it's confusing! We're going to make another Hollow Knight video soon, so I'm curious to see how Ellie handles a more wide open world as she continues further into the game...
now let her try any radiance
Ooh boy, that looks like quite the challenge based on my Google search, haha
I love how you describe the phenomenon of "locking in" as she discovers it for herself.
Ohhh yeah, nothing beats that feeling, especially when it ends in victory :)
@Wilson-108 It's just really funny and I guess wholesome to hear "lock tf in!" explained in normal words too.
Haha, it seems super hard at first! It's crazy how much easier something begins to feel once you get the practice in.
the only problem with this video is that it ends so quickly
Dang man, sorry to hear that. Wishing you the best of luck.
Feel free to reach out if you need help with anything!
Much appreciate man, will do!
