- In this episode of the route learning series, we take another look at the Just Trains Midland Main Line Network, and drive a journey between Nottingham on the Midland Main Line, and Matlock on the Derwent Valley Line. Our traction for the journey is an East Midlands Trains Class 156 DMU, and we follow the timetable of train 2A10, the 0617 departure from Nottingham. Stops along the way include Beeston, Attenborough, Long Eaton, Spondon, Derby, Duffield, Belper, Ambergate, Whatstandwell, Cromford, Matlock Bath, and Matlock.

Really loving these constant uploads! On behalf of everyone here, a huge thank you and keep it up!
Good to see you back, am binge watching your new videos. Loving the consistency and quality!
I've just purchased the AP Class 156 & am still familiarising myself with the unit. Your channel is always my first port of call under such circumstances. Thank you so much for your excellent tutorials.
Thanks, that's great to hear! I'm planning another Class 156 video soon. :)
To see from the start of your channel to where it is now in terms of quality is amazing bud ❤️
Thank you! I know things have changed a lot in that time - and my confidence has grown a lot. Over time I tried to find different ways of doing things, small enhancements to make the viewing experience better for everyone. 🙃
So glad you’re uploading again! Fantastic video as always.
A local route I have traveled many times IRL, great video as always 🙂👍
I think driving at 10 mph for any significant distance is actually quite interesting. It needs a lot of concentration to maintain that fine line between losing too much speed and exceeding the limit, made worse by changes in gradient that often accompany such severe speed restrictions.
Green structure before Attenborough is some sort of conveyor system. A works on the right and what looks like gravel pits on the left on Google maps.
Yep - until 2020 it was a CEMEX site, and most of the worked-out gravel pits to the south of the railway have been turned into a nature reserve - www.cemex.co.uk/su-nottinghamshire.aspx
@@countertony Thanks for that, I was wondering exactly what it was.
Spot on.

Love this!
Love these videos so much there an addiction even though I only play TSW 2 and now I can drive without HUD on most routes!
cool your doing more videos good job on them too!
Hmm, looked like I could see a pedal under the dash. I'd think that would be where the DSD would be IRL.
Another great video as always, like getting to ride around routes I may never get to see.
Am going to watch this later but wanted to say in my best Grandpa Simpson impression:
MAAAATTLOOOOCKKK!!!!
Carry on.
BTW you were spot on by the time you actually reached Whatstandwell. It’s what-STAND-well, or “wot-Stan-wool’ if you live round here! I had my wedding reception at the pub you can see over the bridge to the left of the station at Ambergate. Love the vids mate. I actually know this one maybe 50% compared to you, as opposed to 1% in your normal ‘learn’ videos
Fantastic channel. A notification I enjoy getting 👍🏻👏🏻
That green bridge thing is industrial, it’s for a quarry on the left hand side of the track to pass materials over to lorries on the road on the other side of the track.
You know what’s soon going to be the only thing missing from MML is the Matlock to Buxton. Imagine that, re-imagined and open at Monsal Head, all that beautiful scenery. I’d pay £50 for a working version of that
Great video of routes I work! The class 156 does not have vigilance only DSD which won't give you an in-cab alarm when you lift your foot so no way to realistically simulate DSD with no vigilance. Hope that answers your question.
Just out of curiosity I'm just sending you an idea I think you should do a one 185 a TransPennine Express service do any where you want to go to like for instance Middlesbrough to York or anywhere in the UK
Been debating getting this. Held off on the last sale. But I now think I have almost all the scenario DLC, so might get it next time there's a sale.
That's is the same as the Nottingham train station because I live in Nottingham and that's is spot on
The Revenue and Customs building to west of the Nottm station pretty accurate as well
No DSD I’m sure they only have DVD like most old sprinters so no need for a button press , also night headlights can be determined by driver so if you feel it’s dark enough to switch you do or light to switch to day time running
For the green chute over the track, it reminds me of other things like that which sometimes have conveyors or are just a chute for dispensing waste or material for pickup under the lower end. I'm not sure about that particular one though.
Yes, it's a grain elevator.
Just trains should update the branding on the trains from EMT to EMR
Just Trains have updated their 222 to include EMR branding.
Major Wales Designs have the branded EMR 153 as well as the 156 and 158 in the new EMR livery. He also has the 43 Revamp Pack and the VTEC/LNER/EMR hst reskins.
Armstrong Powerhouse have the 156 in the old EMT livery with EMR branding.

Great video Peter, I always wanted to know where the lines went to from Derby on the midland main line
Derby has services to crewe, Sheffield, Nottingham, Newark Castle and London st Pancras through emr services
I've always pronounced Whatstandwell with the emphasis on "stand", but I'm from Nottinghamshire, not Derbyshire.
The green thing i s a covered conveyor belt looks like it anyways
with emr all matlock trains i know off start and end at newark castle
The route now goes from Newark Castle to Matlock via Nottingham and Derby
Well, it did until the timetable change by EMR. The Newark Castle train now goes to Crewe, and the Matlock train now only goes to Nottingham. It right buggered up my commute.
@@shaggydoguk oh right I didn’t know that last time I was at Nottingham was in August last year I didn’t even know they had change the routes around. Does the Lincoln train still go to Leicester.
@@joshkitching5199 As far as I know it still does. The 18.17 one still stops at Carlton which is my second train home now since the timetable change.
@@joshkitching5199 That train has been extended to Grimsby, still starts from Leicester I believe.
I was on 156404 today 😂
Hi, would you be able to do the Three Bridges to East Grinstead stretch of railway at some point?
See if you can do Newark Castle to crewe
spondon station use to be my local station now nottingham is my local station
I was thinking of getting one of the train simulator which one would you reccomend for the one which includes gwr class 800 and cross country voyager and do the lines cost extra for uk lines and do you have to create the routes or are they already created
TS2017 comes with a Cardiff to Bristol route, however you only get a class 175, 70, and HST. All routes that are not freeware cost money. There is an option to build your own route, but you’ll find that the majority of routes that you drive on will be pre-built by an official route builder.
Did you use custom texture packs like reshade or RW enhancer?
Hi Peter. Thank you for another engaging video. One thing I have never quite understood is why on many of the UK’s rail routes there are frequent increases and reductions in line speed limits within a relatively short distance. For example, there is one route (I can’t remember which one) where the line speed increases from 75mph to 90mph, but then within 300 yards or so it’s down to 60mph. Clearly therefore no point in accelerating. It’s a mystery to me and no doubt many others. Keep up the excellent work.
Speed limits on Britain's railways are all to do with the condition of the track. If track condition is great and in a straight line then it can get 125mph limits, although to get that it has to be in great condition and straight as an arrow for a considerable distance. If there are curves and or the track is in a lesser condition state the speed limits will be adjusted lower as appropriate. And in this country because we have so many hills and valleys the lines tend to have lots of curves in them, hence a lot of speed limits are lower than 125. Also temporary speed limits can be imposed if the condition of a piece of track deteriorates because of water ingress etc. These temporary restrictions will be lifted once remedial action is taken to rectify them. Speed limits are all about safety. Safety is prime.
@@alancharles1681 Hi. I understand why speed limits depend on track curvature, condition etc, but it’s beyond me why they can increase or decrease over relatively short distances. If a train is travelling at a line speed of, say, 50mph and then enters a stretch with a 90mph limit with a reduction after that to 60mph only a few hundred yards later, what is the point of signing the 90mph limit? The driver can’t possibly achieve 90mph.
@@carldove1383 In many countries railways mainly run from A to B without many intermediate junctions with other routes. Britain is a small country with a high density of railways that form an interconnected network, with many junctions. This was even more the case before the system was pruned back heavily in the 1960s. The situation you describe would typically exist where a route that involves a secondary line joins a main line for a short distance and then branches off onto another secondary line. The high speed limit in the intermediate section would be attained by other services that use only the main line even though, as you pointed out, the secondary service has no chance of reaching the same high speed. It's much more expensive to maintain a line to, say, 100 mph standard than, say, 50 mph standard so if that high speed middle section was not needed for some other high speed purpose it simply wouldn't be maintained to the higher standard. The section between Ambergate and Matlock used to be part of the Midland Railway's picturesque main line between Derby and Manchester but has now been reduced considerably in importance. People wanting to travel between Derby and Manchester now have to go via Sheffield and the (also picturesque) Hope Valley line.
A question about the DLC for this route. The core TS 2021 game and all the DLC I own was bought via Steam. That includes the two Midland Main Line packs (Leicester to Nottingham and Derby, and Derby to Sheffield) by Just Trains. I'd like to buy the Derwent Valley extension and the Erewash Valley extension but they are not available on Steam. You can only buy them direct from JT but it says on their site that they are only compatible with Midland Main Line packs bought direct and not with the Steam versions. Why would that be? Have I made a mistake buying from Steam?
what does that sign say at the entrence to Lee Wood Tunnel
@PTGRail: I have a suggestion for a new video: 1U52 the 0523 Northern service from Barrow-in-Furness to Manchester Airport (pre 331 days) if you can put this suggestion onto one of your new route learning vids that would be great (if you can’t I totally understand) keep up the good work.
Love the 156! I wonder... GEML line coming soon?
Ive checked your wonders about the DSD and quite frankly it isn't simulated on ANY of the liveries, perhaps AP might make a patch soon, but for now, realism is not at its finest!
Also where can I grab this route? Looks like something in East Anglia or somewhere further south/north?
Many Thanks! and stay safe!
Just Trains Midlands stuff.
@@xinotron662 Thanks! I`ll be looking into it!
I believe that 156s, at least when originally built, did not have a DVD fitted - simply a foot pedal that has to be depressed at all times. Therefore, I don't see any point in simulating it as there are no warnings to respond to. It would be like simulating the dead man's handle in the Class 483.
How do you see the station and platform from far away for if you don’t have the bottom map on? Also could you maybe do a South Yorkshire route like Sheffield to Leeds with a northern class 158 or old 144 pacer as I sometimes take this route and would like to understand it better. Also how do you know when the next speed change is without map?
It's all about route knowledge and learning the route. Real train drivers don't have the HUD/map, and so I've created these videos to try and teach others how to also drive without the HUD/map. :)
The Route between Sheffield and Leeds via Barnsley does not exist in Train Simulator Classic. The Class 144 Pacer does not exist in the game. The Hope Valley Line is currently in the works by Just Trains.
👍👍👍
you seem to be making more videos on ts21, do you enjoy it more?
For now I enjoy TS more - primarily due to a vastly wider choice of routes and trains to choose from. If I only made TSW videos I’d quickly run out of content to make. I also prefer the driving experience in TS using third party content; it feels more realistic somehow.
@@PTGRail i agree with that, plus i cant run tsw2 very well lol
When are you coming back pal??
;)
@@PTGRail hope you come back soon bro. Be nice to see you again. It's been over a year since your last content. Love your route learning videos. Really good guy
the DSD can be activated by pressing ctrl-d and reset by pressing e
Apparently the DSD in the 156 is more like a deadman's pedal, which is why it hasn't been simulated here. CTRL + D is the usual command with AP products, but it doesn't work on the 156.
@@PTGRail aaah never thought of that!
