Me2. Choosing between the canon rebel and the nikon was hard. No mic jack...but the nikon is set up better for the night astrophotographer.
I thought it was mirror less so that's a disappointment but it will take pics of the sky at night.

Great video! My daughter was debating between a Nikon D3500 and a Canon EOS Rebel SL2 for a photography class she's taking in college. They both appear to have virtually the same stats, although I've read that the 3500 is better for photos and the SL2 is better for video.

    • @photogenius
      @photogenius  5 років тому

I feel the image quality is (only) slightly better with the D3500, but they are both great cameras and if video is also of interest then the SL2 or newer SL3 wins hands down.
      thanks for watching.

The wheel changes the shutter speed until you press the "i" button then toggle to iso. Then press enter and you toggle between iso setting. I'm not sure the wheel does iso at all.
He shows how to change iso at around 11:25 in the video.

I’ve had my D3500 for a year and love it. Received two new lenses for Christmas (35mm and 18mm-140mm) and can’t wait to use them (my kit came with the 18mm - 55mm and the 70mm to 300mm when purchased). I’d agree with most of Paul’s remarks and it is a very honest review. Also, wish I lived in Australia because it’d be a fun experience to explore your class, Paul. Cheers from Iowa, USA.

The Bluetooth works but is sort of slow. The camera control part works but I'm not experienced enough to say how well.

Hold it right there mate!! :D
If you can get a D3400, like in my country, 200€ cheaper - THEN GO FOR IT!
There's no significant change between the two, unless you really want the new shape/layout of the buttons.
I won't judge you for any pick though, both will be great lenses to get you started on photography.
If you're really set on the D3500 then I'd like to suggest you to keep holding off as long as you can - Maybe until January, to see if any sales might come up :)
      Good luck!

Right now the D3500 and D5300 are being offered with similar pricing. Which would you recommend? To go with the new D3500 or move up a model and go with the D5300? Thank you for the content and insight!

If you can still get the D3400 I would grab it. The D3500 is replacement, not an upgrade.

Sorry to have misread your question. I would go for the D5300, whilst mostly these cameras are very similar, the D5300 does offer the following advantages : 39 focus points compared to 11 on the D3500, you can use the Nikon remote (a big 👍), the LCD screen is articulated (very useful) plus if you are considering using the camera for video then the D5300 offers stereo (rather than mono) audio recording plus the option to connect an external microphone.

I've since supplemented the kit lens beyond the 18-55 VR ( AFP ) with 10-20 VR ( AFP ), 35 DX Prime ( AFS ), 50FX Prime ( AFS ) and 70-300 VR FX( AFP ).

What are your thoughts on buying this as a kit that comes with the 18-55mm lens,70-300mm lens and an extra battery? It’s $130 more than the kit with just the 18-55mm. The 70-300 isn’t the VR lens though.

Photo Genius I got the kit the next day but hadn’t opened it up until today. I’m a bit disappointed. I opened it up and realized the 18-55 is the non VR version. All the kits that had the just the 18-55mm had the VR version so I was under the impression this was the same they just added the 70-300 non VR and extra battery. It’s definitely my mistake for not noticing it but I may return it and just buy the regular kit and then buy the 70-300 lens separately. I’m going to snap some shots and see how they turn out without VR first but I am pretty disappointed that I didn’t notice that.
