I got a D3500 two weeks ago for Christmas, and it is my first DSLR. I am as excited as I am clueless! I stumbled upon your videos and have decided work my way through them rather than clicking on random tutorials suggested in the sidebar.
Have gotten back into photography after many years away, much has changed, but I am really pleased to find your tutorials, even more so as I purchased a used D5100, your video here helped me out a bunch, cheers for that
I bought a D3500 and I'm amazed at all it can do. I now find it is considered an entry level camera. Call me uninformed, but it begs the question what more can a professional level camera do? BTW, your videos are excellent. Thank you.
I’m often struck with awe at how much technology these DSLR’s contain in such a small package. I have recently acquired a slightly used Nikon D5500 and am especially blown away by the in camera Retouch feature. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Paul. Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
First *polishes his ePenis* 1) You taught me that, and how to 'show info' on pictures while viewing them on the camera (Press up ^.^ Then you can see stuff like iso, focal length and histogram (I believe its called)). 2) I think mine has been off since the beginning - Mainly due to low light shooting. I might have to fiddle more with it :D 3) Mark Godin taught me that, and to use simple stuff like tinfoil and/or tissue paper to manipulate the on camera flash 😋 4) I learned that, from you, via the Canon video 😁 I'm surprised how powerful the cameras are by themselves, albeit I'll still use CameraBag for edits. 5) I should do it more in house, but I mainly do it when I find a subject (usually a flower) and I'm taking a bunch of shots. If I dislike the exposure I fiddle a bit with it there, but I nearly always have to retouch it while editing it anyway ^.^ Great video btw - I like how the tips changed from the Canon video and how the tips can apply to both manufacturers (and probably others ^.^) Lovely stuff Paul!
Thank you. Your videos are just awesome, with my D90 hibernating for over 10 years and the advent of iPhone pics, I left my D90 at home most of the time. Have picked it up now for kids rugby games and am loving learning from your channel. Thank you heaps.

I have just bought a Nikon D5200 and I am a relatively new user in digital SLR photography although I used to use Film SLR's in the past owning a Canon A1 so a lot of the camera functions are the same. So thanks for your tips on using a Nikon DSLR . I'm slowly getting used to all the settings etc.

So the exposure compensation button is just another way of tinkering with the shutter speed and aperture at the same time... But just pushed into one button...?... Why not just change the shutter speed or apeture ourselves and watch the meter go up or down in 1/3 stop incriments??
A fair point, but changing aperture and shutter yourself would mean using the manual mode, now whilst I'm a big fan of shooting manual, a lot of people are not ready for full manual and choose to use the priority modes - exposure compensation gives them some extra flexibility.
@@photogenius does using the exposure compensation button actually Over ride the exposure meter in manual mode when you tell it... "Hey, I wanna change the exposure via this button in this amount of increments" or does the camera keep it at 0 when using that button?
Hi Paul this is Suman.I have Nikon D850 want to know whether focussing can be done through Back button focus in live view mode instead touching and tapping to take a pic.Pl suggest. Thanks
Great videos, I'm watching to get tips and knowledge before I start a college course. I have a 3500D, just wondered if you might know... Is there a way to add a mic if I where to shoot a video? I haven't found anything online other than jack > mini USB cables but I'm not sure if they would work on this model?
I bought the feelworld monitor that mounts on the camera. Should i use the monitor or camera for the shutter speed? I am new. What do you think about the freeworld?
My D3500 does not have optical vr in the shooting menu. Does that mean the optical vr is only to be on the lens. Can it be built into the camera. Thanks
Hello Paul, very much new to photography, I have been using a bridge camera and just purchased a Nikon D7500, cannot find if I can switch from classic to graphic display. Can this be done on the d7500 model. Cheers
Hi Sir, i am confused between the D7200 (49k) and D7500 (65k).The D500 is out of budget. I am into wildlife photography especially big cats. Will the new features in D7500 like the new processor, metering modes, 180k pixel sensor, 50 raw bursts, 8fps and better iso performance enough for the extra 15k ? or, is it just more on paper. Will it practicality make difference comparing with the D7200 because it has 4mp more which helps in cropping? I will pair it with the 200-500mm. I don't mind the single sd slot in D7500, i am not a professional photographer. Thanks in advance.
@@photogenius thanks, i might get the D7500 then. Currently i use the D3400 with the 70-300mm VR kitlens and i get good shots with it too but during evening it becomes a bit noisy with moving subjects due to a bit high shutter speed.
Just to clarify, the digital noise is a result of using a high ISO. When shooting at night try using a slower / longer shutter speed and a tripod - you can then use a lower ISO and get a much cleaner looking image. Hope that helps.
@@photogenius Yeah thats the problem, i can't use a tripod or monopod since i will be on a open jeep and there will be 5 other people with me. All i can do is handheld and that too sometimes in awkward positions and moving vehicles. I need a higher shutter speed in those cases and thats what i click most. In case of humans and landscape there's no problem. I can handheld the Nikon 200-500mm at 1/25s but in case of tigers or leopards i use a minimum of 1/400s because of their sudden movements and i want the pics sharp. But i don't click birds a lot so i am thinking the D7200 might be good enough for bigcats and it still has comparable ISO performance till ISO1600 and the extra 4mp helps in cropping. But after ISO3200 it falls behind the D7500. I am thinking of getting the D7200 and another lens like the Tamron 70-210mm f/4 or, Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 or, more likely a few spare batteries as their is always electrical cut offs in these remote areas.
Yep, the "animated" aperture display only features on the entry level cameras in the Nikon range as it is aimed at beginners. Not a feature of the D850 because it is a more pro style camera.

Thanks for the video I have a Nikon d90 but I have difficulties in the settings to give me the good pictures I need most the pic I take either looks blurry or not with vibrant color, is it that the camera is old? pls help!
Ignatius Atenikang: To make your photos more vibrant set the "picture control" in the shooting-menu to "Vivid". If your photos are blurred this is usually caused by "camera shake"......use a fast shutter-speed or a tripod to fix this problem (and turn VR on if your lens has this option).
Hi Ignatius Atenikang Blurry pictures (as Philip says) are probably due to camera shake as a result of using a shutter speed that is too slow.
