    One of the things I really love about your channel and your work, is that the focus on:
    Know your Gear,

    and how get the best out of what you have.

    It’s not the tool, sharp or blunt, that makes the art;
    but the creator’s hand, the fire within, the beating heart.
    Masterpieces were forged in pixels sparse,
    from those who saw the world anew and played their part.
    For in the end, it’s not the tech or screen,
    but the artist’s voice that shapes the unseen.

    Why keep calling it a drone for beginners. Totally isn't. It's a drone of convenience. Zero hassle

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  8 днів тому +7

      When doing a 'review', we need to be mindful of the price and DJI's target market. For example, we can't call out a $199 drone for not having 10-bit Dlog. I agree though, lots of non-beginners will be interested in this drone. The fact it's a hybrid FPV/camera drone is interesting for me. I always wanted to fly the Avata without goggles but you can't. I like this development with the Neo. Cheers!

    Watching Potato Jet's episode peaked my interest in this "cheap and cheerful" drone because it could be flown with DJI remote controls. However I wasn't impressed with the Colour Profile. But then the drone is not really aimed at people who want to meddle with the footage in post production. You blew that thought out of the water.
    You both managed to work some magic with the Natural Profile footage, which I'm guessing was 8bit, to create some really good colour grades. This elevated the results way above what could be considered throw away TicToc or boring selfies for a drone that costs roughly the same price as a toy knock-off drone.

      Thanks for the comment. Always good to see you here. We enjoy trying to get pro results from non-pro cameras. It's what we had to do back in the day when we didn't have great gear. That kind of 'adversity' for want of a better word is what made us learn our craft all those years ago.

    I'm not convinced that its solely aimed at the Newcomers... I've been flying drones for 17 years ( we called them quadcopters back then)
    To me, it's a versatile & robust drone which looks like a lot of fun and also a cheap way to get more involved with FPV.
    I currently fly Mini 3 pro and Mini 2.. the 2 I use for FPV along with the goggle that you put your phone into.
    I plan to go for the Goggle 3...lotsa money but look very good.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  8 днів тому

      Completely agree. I guess the low price and the theoretical target market of beginners could be seen as justification for only providing a 'Normal' colour profile for example but I think a lot of more advanced users will be paying attention too. If not this version but certainly whatever DJI follow it up with.

    Hi there, great tio have you back. The DJI Neo footage looks really great, so much better than the oversharpened (maybe default-) imgaes of some other videos. What exactly is your workflow to achieve these pictures?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  9 днів тому +11

      Thanks for the comment! We are going to do a video on this because we want to show what the camera is capable of. The camera is good but the one-size-fits-all way it is setup is a bit harsh. First and foremost, the exposure and white balance must be locked otherwise the shifts are really extreme especially in direct sunlight. Overcast days with flat light are fine but with contrasty harsh light you have to be in charge of the exposure. This is the main thing that differentiates our footage from others because at present, the no-controller quick shots only shoot auto exposure/WB and even with phone-only control, you can't fix the exposure. I'd like to see them either add manual exposure controls to the phone-only app or at least allow you to touch and hold the live preview like you can on an iPhone to lock exposure.
      After this we have flattened out the contrasty Normal colour profile in post and made some colour adjustments. It's the harsh Normal colour profile that makes the footage look over sharpened - it's too severe in my opinion. Of course, the goal for a $199 beginner drone is to not give too many confusing settings but at the moment, manual exposure/WB is only available when you use the remote control and the regular DJI Fly app.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  7 днів тому +2

      For sure! We've always been a big fan of Quickshots on the other drones because there is virtually no set-up time and like you say, you can actually move and it will track you on these complex moves. The nuisance has always been that Quickshots are limited to 30fps and we like to shoot 25fps. Dropping a 30fps Quickshot into a 25fps timeline looks jittery. I don't know why DJI restricts the frame rates on the other drones because they unlocked full manual exposure settings and all the colour profiles too. Anyway, for this DJI Neo, putting aside the frame rate being fixed at 30fps, if you do the Quickshots with the controller and lock in a manual exposure/WB then they are great - and not just for beginners. Cheers!

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  7 днів тому +2

      Hey! No trickery going on here - just manual exposure/WB and a minor colour grade. To our amazement, it was easy to modify the image. The 1/2" sensor is a big sensor by drone standards (many of the older but excellent DJI drones had a 1/2.3" sensor) so I think the camera is very good. But DJI have baked in a severe colour profile so things look good out the box for beginners. Makes sense but in high contrast scenarios it's a bit rough and would be nice to have some more control in the app without having to 'fix' things in post (even though it's 'just' a beginner drone).

      Thanks for the comment! The goal of this video was to show what can be done with pretty much entirely single-input manoeuvres, i.e. shots that require no skill (and can be done easily with the phone). The reason we use the controller for some of the shots is so we can use the 'proper' DJI Fly app which allows us to lock the exposure and WB. I'm hoping it will change, but at present you only have auto exposure/WB if you use the new mobile-control app.

It was a touch windy mind you. The EIS makes it smooth and jitter-free but it can't 'reposition' a drone that's getting pushed about. Regarding the courses, our Masterclass has a 60 minute module covering how to edit drone content. As for the Neo, next video will be on our workflow for getting these shots.

      Thanks for the reply, I'll check out the masterclass :) Look forward to seeing the workflow as getting usable video out of this drone is my biggest issue right now

    How tight (small) circle can be made? Can you also control height while in circle?

    • @DroneFilmGuide

      2m if I recall. I'm pretty sure that like Spotlight, you can use the manual controls on the phone to adjust height while flying a circle.

    why your footage seems better than others ? are you using ND filters ? others footage on youtube I see the sharpness is broken.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  8 днів тому +2

      Our next video will be on how to get these results but in a nutshell, (1) manual fixed exposure, (2) manual white balance, (3) some colour correction/grading to reduce the contrast in the image, (4) a degree of experience when it comes to setting up shots that work around the limitations of small sensor cameras. No NDs. This drone has EIS which requires a fast shutter speed to work. So all this footage is shot with the 'wrong' shutter speed were you to be trying to adhere to the 180 degree rule.

    There seem to be severe compression artifacts in many neo videos, is this a problem with this drone?

      It's UA-cam. We noticed it in the detailed parts of some of the shots.

    Besides the one axis gimbal and video quality, my main problem with this Neo is the sane as the Hover X1 that over been using since last year. Speed when following. Seems it’s limited to 21kph in follow mode and the Hover X1 is about 25kph. That’s ok to follow the action if you’re running but cycling or mountain biking it’s way to slow. I know this from experience with making movies with the Hover X1.
    The price of the Neo with the remote has got me interested but it failing to fast enough to be useful in the fundamental follow mode is very limiting. Hover have just announced their X1 Pro and Pro Max that to 42kph in follow with burst up to 60kph to get into position when following (plus rear obstacle sensors when tracking from the front. It’s a lot $$ though so I guess you get what you pay for.

    Great feature set.Can fly areas not available to over 249gm drones in Canada.
    But the scream of the prop,seriously? Why do we have to wait for Master Airscrew to develop props wih a more tolerable pitch.Good thing we have Master Airscrew ,but really DJI?

      Sure thing. You only get Normal colour profile which is really contrasty. We've boosted the shadows a little and made a few colour adjustments.
