Your footage actually looks a lot better. All DJI need to do now is unlock picture settings when using phone alone and it automatically becomes a useful quick shots drone.
Do you think that is something they will do? this should be super easy for them to fix with an firmware. I wonder why they had these (kinda crappy) settings in the first place? Could it be to incentivise people to spend a bit more for better footage?
Very informative video, thank you for sharing how things can be improved instead of a video, seen quite a few, complaining about the poor video performance and nothing else.
It’s not the tool, sharp or blunt, that makes the art; but the creator’s hand, the fire within, the beating heart. Masterpieces were forged in pixels sparse, from those who saw the world anew and played their part. For in the end, it’s not the tech or screen, but the artist’s voice that shapes the unseen.
I can’t comment on the Neo drone because I don’t have one. I have a Mini 4 Pro. And until about 6 months ago I put everything into manual. However after watching an American UA-camr with some impressive cinematic skills with his Mini 4 Pro, he advocated putting the Mini 4 into auto exposure and just concentrate on getting the shot. The American UA-camr kept saying that DJI got the exposure right most of the time provided you kept your eyes on the Zebras. I used to spin virtual plates by controlling the drone in the air, the camera angle and while gradually changing the exposure all at the same time while trying not to crash. Despite all my efforts doing landscape vistas panning around outside locations my shots would look obvious when I tried to adjust exposure. I’d get similar effects like stepping the exposure ring with hard exposure changes that to me stood out like a sore thumb. I decided to give his advice a try and take manually controlling exposure out of the equation and let the drone control exposure. Got to say that I’ve been mightily impressed with letting my drone control exposure, provided I kept an eye on exposure compensation and the Zebras. As for White Balance, only an idiot would use auto WB. That causes no end of pain matching shots. You’re welcome to take a butcher’s at my work and see how I get on with auto exposure on my drone especially filming at twighlight.
Might wait for the neo 2 or 3… what no one seems to be talking about is how AI is going to affect drone/camera capabilities in the next couple of years. Some of the ‘fixes’ that now require adjusting via the controller will be done automatically as AI really enters the picture (no pun intended)
Hi Steward, thanks for the time putting in this video. Maybe you can help me on this. I have the HoverAir X1 Pro at the moment. Also just bought the Neo Motion Fly More combo with the Goggles N3. haven't tried it yet because I'm not sure if will return it. The reason I bought is because I like fly manually to capture landscapes and things like that. I thought flying with the goggles would be easier to do because everything is in front of you. Greetz Ab
Thank you so much 🎉 for being so nice sharing this information ❤ you are the best. I’m dying to get my first drone in this case the DJI neo and use it as a new feature in my packages
Thank you for providing such valuable information. As a complete beginner to drone piloting, your insights have been extremely helpful. I was hesitant to start due to the perceived learning curve, but this drone seems to make the process much more accessible. I have a specific question regarding manual exposure settings. You mentioned that manual exposure adjustment can be done either through the DJI app or the controller. I'd like to clarify: once I've set the exposure manually, can I switch to an automatic flight mode without the drone reverting to automatic exposure? Or will any change to a pre-set flight mode override my manual exposure settings? Thank you for your time and expertise. Yves
Thanks for the comment! If you are using a controller like the RC-N3 that you can buy with the Neo, you can use manual exposure with the automatic flight modes (so that's great). The only restriction at present is when using the phone's Wi-Fi control.
Thanks a lot for getting back to me so quickly. I was about to purchase the Fly More combo, which includes the RC-N3 controller and extra batteries. If I understand correctly, this means I can set the exposure manually and still use the drone's automatic flight modes. That's great news! I think I'm going to take the plunge and give drone piloting a try. It seems like a relatively affordable way to get started and see if I enjoy it. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for this video! As someone who is coming from analog film photography and just started filming and flying that was extremely helpful and easy to understand WHY you do some settings and what they effect.
You mentioned a fifty-minute FREE training on color correction in the video, but I was unable to find it on the website. Is the training still available? On a side note, thank you for making this video. I was going to hold off on getting the Neo but I might pull the trigger now because it is cheap and you have proved that acceptable social media video content is possible.
Thank you. The video I was looking for, not sure how I arrived at this one so late. Can you please also let me know what traditional version of DJI Fly app should I download?
Thanks for the comment. There is only one DJI Fly app but it loads differently depending on whether there is a controller switched on and connected or not.
Did you film these in 30 or 60fps by the way? Super helpful video that makes the neo a bit more tempting - if only they’d allow those changes via the phone app!
Once you’ve set the manual exposure, does the drone remember that? Or do you need to redo that every time you switch it off and on again? I know my Mini 4 Pro remembers the last settings but does the Neo?
glad i watched this, was just considering the Neo as a travel alternative to my mini 3 but since manual exposure requires a controller, it defeats some of the purpose. great that DJI is covering this segment tho, SOOOO many cheap drones out there with crap video.
Great video! Question: If you use the remote for better video quality can we still use the same vocal commands, voice recording and helix presets etc of the drone? Thanks.
Bought the stand alone, should have bought the combo, already upgraded to the controller and extra batteries which they’ve run out of for the foreseeable future. I like it but it needs some tweaking, get the impression it was rushed on sale. To be honest I should have bought one of the existing sub 250g drones even though they are more expensive. Hopefully future firmware changes will address the issues identified because sometimes the auto functions are all you want.
Thank you for sharing this information, it’s helpful for me. 👍 I’m not a pro but I do want to have a light & easy drone can record memorable videos while I travel with my family. 😊
I have an avata 2, so I can hook the Neo up to the goggles to put it in Pro video mode and change the settings. My question: Will the drone remember those settings if I then try to fly it in one of the automatic tracking modes without using the goggles?
Thank you so much. Man, you make it so the listener really has a shot LOL! But, seriously - thank you so much for sharing and in doing so also inspiring us. I have a DJI Spark and have enjoyed it - but this DJI Neo has me completely intrigued. Can not wait to order one today. Wishing you great and continued success, Brian
Great video! Could I just borrow a controller to set the sharpness to -2? Would the Neo still remember the setting after when not using the controller? I can live with automatic settings but the over sharpened image looks so bad
Despite the fact I have a DJI Mini 4K, it's very tempting to get a Neo for the sheer simplicity of use. I have so many issues with my Google Pixel 7 Pro talking to my Mini 4K and it's mind numbing. Where as a Neo looks like a toy I can just press a button and off it goes. Which is great when on a hike and you just want to set the drone off, within seconds. But not being able to edit exposures and WB in the app and (taking into account the issues I've mentioned above) having to use a full controller! DJI couldn't patch a very simple thing into the phone app?
@@DroneFilmGuide Ok, but if I only use my phone for editing, simple applications, I don't work with colors, I just cut videos and attach them to other videos, do you recommend leaving the factory settings at 0?
Great video and very informative 👍. Is there a way of locking the exposure in auto mode when using the rc-n2 buddy ?. I can do it by pressing my phone screen when using the mini 4 pro but I can't seem to do it with my Neo. Apart from assigning the FN button to AE LOCK, which isn't ideal as I normally assign that to 1 tap cruise control and 2 taps gimbal functions. Many thanks 😊
Would like DJI to add "Camera" with timed shots, say 5 Sec & 10 Sec intervals to All the NEO preset shooting modes. At present think only the "Circle" mode offers timed photos. Only offering the "Video" Camera Mode is a bit limiting
Dang, I guess I need to go out and get a controller. Highly disappointed that DJI did not include support for the controller that came with the Air 2 S.
Great video. By far the best footage I've seen so far on this drone. Sad though that you have another DJI drone so you can use the controller to adjust manual exposure. This pushes the $ up. Considering Hover X1 pro max is just announced @ 8K footage .
Thanx for this. Surprised to see shutter adjusted for lighting rather than the FPS. I’ve always steered away from this option in order to adhere to the 180 shutter rule etc. I noticed your way had no bad effect on the image so wonder if you could clarify e.g shutter 200 fps 100 or if I can just forget that rule and do as you did?
Thanks for the comment! Normally you have pretty limited options when it comes to increasing the frame rate. In the case of the Neo, the only 4K frame rate is 30fps anyway. Normally shutter speed is the lever pulled to manage exposure, not frame rate. Aperture is fixed on this drone and ISO is kept at 100 so shutter speed is really your only option. We are strict advocates of the 180 degree rule for shutter speed but it doesn't apply for the Neo. Like you saw, we were shooting with shutter speeds like 1/800, not the 1/60 required for 30fps. An ND filter would be required to make 1/60 possible but things get tricky when we consider the Neo uses electronic image stabilisation which requires a fast shutter speed with no motion blur to work by digitally realigning the frames. Given how jittery this drone is and how heavily it leans on the EIS, I think it's unlikely ND filters will be that useful for the Neo so in a nutshell, cranking the shutter at as required will be the way of manually managing exposure. But like you say, it doesn't look bad at all. Only connoisseurs of motion blur would notice!
My question is you use a controller and set the WB to 5500k and the ISO 100 and sharpness and things like that to manual, then you next time use it with the phone will the settings remain or will change back to auto?
Hehe, thanks for this, annoying that you cannot control these settings in the phone app! And by the way, you go to all our favourite places in and around G-Town. Cheers!
My Question Stewart, once you have changed settings using the remote control, will the settings stay later on if using the NEO just alone without a controller????
I haven't seen any discussion about the 1080p video quality. It's not professional quality, but the Neo isn't a professional drone. 1080p is good for social media. Is the 1080p output any good? Are there any advantages to shooting in 1080p? Do you get better stabilization? Unfortunately, we aren't going to get our Neos until October, so I can't do any of my own testing yet.
Thanks for the information. As others have said, its a shame (rip off) DJI have restricted the functions on this little drone in order to push you buy the much more expensive Combo version.
How about the rule for the fps? If you shot 4K 30 fps the shutter has to be double right? Do we need to wait for ND filters or we can still shoot with different fps?
The only 4K frame rate is 30fps so that's not a variable. NDs will be tricky for this drone because the EIS requires a fast shutter to eliminate motion blur, thereby allowing the algorithm to digitally realign the frames of the video. Given how jittery this 135g drone is, smooth footage is entirely dependent on EIS. NDs with a 1/60th shutter could work but only if the motion of the drone is very smooth. Otherwise the EIS produces mushy footage.
My biggest takeaway from this episode, if I was to buy this drone, would be to reduce the sharpening and follow your advice on reducing the contrast to make the image less crunchy. We really must remember that this light weight, cheap drone is marketed towards people who really don’t want to spend close to or even north of £500. DJI are pitching a simple out of the box drone that takes off and lands in your hand and can produce footage that can go straight onto social media with practically no editing experience. The Neo is the perfect gateway drug. However with a little prior knowledge, it can be a wolf in sheep’s clothing by turning off sharpening and reducing the contrast curve to allow a bit of editing flair and creativity. Non of this is the fault of the drone but more its major selling point. It’s simple to use and priced incredibly well compared to toy drones at or around the same price point. The real question is, why should you have to register such a lightweight tiny drone in the first place, when something this small can be swatted away with the back of a hand? The genie is well and truly out of the bottle now.
Well i got it indeed as a potential hors d'oeuvre in this hobby. I was interested in drones but after some trials with a tello i didn't want to risk much money. For me it seems to be perfect beginner drone. I mainly indeed fly it manualy so far, the auto modes are however really convenient!
Is Exposure Lock a good idea? Also, how about shooting in 1080p...I personally don't know anyone with a 4K monitor. My phone defaults to 360p in UA-cam. And to everyone having a mental breakdown about this drone... Just buy an Inspire 3....
Amazing! They really really need to bring all the setting adjustment to the just mobile app flights. I want the drone for the odd establishing shot when I don't have space for my Mini 4 pro and controller.
totally agree... I'm not interested in using my controller with this drone like my others. I purchased the Neo as a "quick draw" drone, but i do need to lock the exposure from the Phone App. This is really needed in a future update.
@@thewiltshirewomble it's so small, I like the idea of just keeping it in my bag permanently and controlling with the phone. So many times I've not got my bigger drone because I can't fit everything in my bag and I thought dam wish I could get an aerial shot, or even a high inside shot of a big space. But yeah it definitely needs all the settings and stuff in the phone app
Now then. Brilliant video and I even made a video of mine on my channel. Subscribed from your previous video. Excellently described. 👌 BIG QUESTION.. if I make changes with the controller (I have the fly more pack) will they then stay when I film without the controller or does it reset if I pick a quick shot mode? REALLY hope the Pro settings come to the mobile app soon!!
Now do a video of showing us all how this drone and transmitter fit in your pocket - all I see is an updated mini mavic X1 goes in my mrs handbag when we go out lol
Hey Stewart! I haven't gotten mine yet, purchased to learn manual/acro without beating up my Avata 2 too much. It has so little mass, it doesn't kamakaze itself too badly. I did see where you can lock exposure, when using a controller and the fly app, by long pressing on the display while in Auto. I won't be able to test until the MONTH long delay on US Neo sales is up. 😢
Appreciate the comment as always! The long press approach to lock exposure would be really handy on the phone app too. Like a smartphone camera app basically. We tried and tried but we couldn't get the new mobile app to do it. Hopefully by the time yours arrives we'll have some firmware updates!
@@DroneFilmGuide Yessir! I'm not sure what FW you were specifically running, but I wouldn't doubt your word on the experience- I did see a guy locking it onscreen with Neo, can't recall if it was on RC-N2 / RC-N3 and Apple/IOS or Android, but odds are on IOS based on popularity. Then again, it could have been an RC-2! I would hunt the video down and link it, but it's pointless..Some revision + hardware combo had it, so it's no doubt in the pipeline. I can't get over how broad DJI made compatibility with their ecosystem, right out the door. It would be a Logical conclusion that other compatibility matrix's from Avata/Avata 2 etc. are likely coming as well! note:. from DJI Support Hi there. DJI Neo camera supports Auto mode and PRO mode, which are only available when the drone is linked with a remote controller. The camera parameters set in the remote controller will not be applied when the drone is controlled by phone Wi-Fi.
OMG, so basically it's a crap without the controller. maening they forcing people to buy controller anyway... maybe Hover X1 pro max is a way to go. Thanks for sharing.
Neo + Controller is easily a $350 investment. If you NEED that setup...get the Mini 4K. That said, DJI have fixed these issues in the past. I'll bet a donut they update the firmware before October 6 U.S. release.

Very good tips but I feel it really defeats the purpose by having controller to get best video...the intention is just to get short clips without carrying a lot of things..
Not being able to disable auto exposure or WB when using a smartphone really kills the Neo for me. Its whole USP is its small size and ability to be controlled by smartphone, so DJI not allowing you to manually control exposure and WB with an actual phone is just a terrible move on their part.
Still no way of getting decent footage without using the controller...... which means you just go buy a normal dji mini and defeats the object of this drone

So I assume that these settings only hold until you have to swap the battery, correct?
Great drone great fun. You Don’t need al that so called Cinematic. Just have fun and don’t try to be the next Steven Spielberg
After this news, namely that manual exposure and shutter speed control is not available from the app, the desire to buy the drone is gone.
Otherwise the EIS produces mushy footage.
thank you
hi, this place (1:30) where you made the video is amazing! I love this turbines... Where is? You need an authorization to enter there?
GReat video. One Q: can you change those settings with the RC + DJI app and then use the drone without phone or RC? or reverts to auto
No, it reverts to auto I'm afraid.
@@DroneFilmGuide bummer!
I dont know why, but you get a lot better image when flying with the Goggles 3. You can also fly 4:3 4K, which is not possible otherwise
If we change the sharpness settings to -2, will it be the same setting if we control neo using just the phone? Thanks
No, I'm afraid not.
@@DroneFilmGuide Thank you, this is really helpful. 🙂
A long-press exposure lock on the phone app would be great. Just like a smart phone camera app.
@@lukefoxwelltotally agree buddy….. same !
@@lukefoxwell Seriously? You can't take a photo with the Neo? That's a deal breaker for me.
Now then. Brilliant video and I even made a video of mine on my channel.
Subscribed from your previous video. Excellently described. 👌
BIG QUESTION.. if I make changes with the controller (I have the fly more pack) will they then stay when I film without the controller or does it reset if I pick a quick shot mode?
REALLY hope the Pro settings come to the mobile app soon!!
Hey! It resets I'm afraid. I'm sure DJI will build-out that side of the app soon enough.
How is this drone better than the mini 4k?
Great tips Stewart
I hope DJI can include these changes to the phone control
Hopefully they'll let us do it on.the phone, I'll take a look and see if Hoverair will do it
Now do a video of showing us all how this drone and transmitter fit in your pocket - all I see is an updated mini mavic
X1 goes in my mrs handbag when we go out lol
(Goggles Integra Motion 2, FPV Controller 2, etc. People complaining about video quality, specs etc. On a sub $200usd drone. Really? I'm learning full manual FPV and it rips! Quite agile, in fact. Care Refresh is $22 I can't buy LUNCH for that money!
-Looking forward to more of you "running up hills with a Drone!" - 135 grams shouldn't weigh you down too much!
@@BlairAir Wow, quoting old videos - high five to that!
@@DroneFilmGuide I have a long memory... be careful what you say! 🧐
Good job! 👏🏼
Appreciate it! Good to see you here.

Hi there. DJI Neo camera supports Auto mode and PRO mode, which are only available when the drone is linked with a remote controller. The camera parameters set in the remote controller will not be applied when the drone is controlled by phone Wi-Fi.
Thanks for the confirmation!
@@DroneFilmGuide The bundle version in the USA does not include the RCN3. 😞
OMG, so basically it's a crap without the controller. maening they forcing people to buy controller anyway... maybe Hover X1 pro max is a way to go. Thanks for sharing.
@@iamcheck.thisout correct 👍 and rcn3 in 🇺🇸 bundle version is not included (yes in Europe )
So what's the minimum controller that meets the requirement? I don't what to have to go buy another controller.
You are a pro, thanks
4k 30fps is a great camera... Most of what makes modern cameras so good is their software... Perfect example.. APPLE.
Neo + Controller is easily a $350 investment.
If you NEED that setup...get the Mini 4K.
That said, DJI have fixed these issues in the past.
I'll bet a donut they update the firmware before October 6 U.S. release.
Sino tengo el control puedo solo hacerlo poniéndole un filtro nd?
Maybe they will add them settings in newer app version as carrying a controller as well just too bulky.
When setting the camera sharpness with the controller. Will it hold those settings when you use it without the controller?

meaning you need to buy controller to have that setting ...🙄🙄
@@iamcheck.thisoutI bought the controller, should have invested in the combo😬🥲
Every complaining review fixed. lol You guys have always brought the goods when it comes to quality drone footage. Thanks!
Yeah but at what cost to your pocket ? Editing software laptop etc these are meant to be a point and shot then upload drone not hours in editing
@@grumpygrandpa3640 davinci resolve is free and able to run on my wooden machine
Very good tips but I feel it really defeats the purpose by having controller to get best video...the intention is just to get short clips without carrying a lot of things..
Not being able to disable auto exposure or WB when using a smartphone really kills the Neo for me. Its whole USP is its small size and ability to be controlled by smartphone, so DJI not allowing you to manually control exposure and WB with an actual phone is just a terrible move on their part.
can u change sharpness for palm and mobile modes?
Nope.
Magnificent
I thought it's not available for a while
Best Video title ever! 😂
this is cool
Still no way of getting decent footage without using the controller...... which means you just go buy a normal dji mini and defeats the object of this drone
Since yesterday an update is out for the smartphone app, which now allows to manually control the drone!
You've been able to do that from day one. I showed it in my first video a month or so back.
Or do you mean manually adjust the camera settings?
Why can't I set the FPS to 25? It only gives 60, 50 or 30. 😛Also no RAW/DNG mode for photos.
