Dude, I’ve watched a LOT of ranges tests of different drones over the years and this was probably the *closest* call I’ve ever seen!!! Glad to see you managed to get it back! Great video!!
@@BlairAir I watched one guy , I think in America, pushed some DJI to about 11 miles (or was it km) , resisting all warnings and finally forced to land on a flat roof of a farm. The terrain was totally flat if I remember right.
Sooooo.... WHY would you not have flown over land in the event you did not have enough charge? Far better chance of saving it on a ground landing than a water landing. Just thinking you took a bigger chance than you needed to. Glad you got it back! Now go grab a towel and wipe the sweat off your forehead, lol
Nail biting exciting!!! Could not keep my eyes of the video. And a huge sigh of relief (and a good laugh) when this loyal 'pet' landed in your hand. I am not going to reproduce your brave action though! Thanks for this great video 🙂
It wasn't the wind pushing it off course, if it was the wind, then a) There would be "high wind" warnings on the remote - b) the trees would be moving a lot if the wind was above 8m/s which the max the drone can cope with c) it would have been blown off course to the right on the way back but both times it was going left which suggests either you weren't holding the stick exactly straight (best guess) or there is something up with the calibration of the controller (or drone). This made you travel much further than you needed to on the way back.
I wondered about that myself. I've had a high wind warning myself once. The trees did look fairly still. But it's a light drone easily moved by breeze I should imagine.
I wouldn't be so quick to discount the wind...there is generally a fair amount of wind variation (and could be quite substantial) between ground level and 70m (230ft), particularly anywhere near or over water, and the Neo is a feather. I would have dropped to 15-20m once I had good radio line of sight to see if that was the problem. Nice vid! 👍
@@jpenna1976 Basically it means the drone can still operate under reliable control (inc. staying in place automatically) if the wind is blowing up to 8m/s (18mph.) It can also make some progress into the wind but it'll use a lot more battery and not be as fast. My mini 3 pro is rated for 10m/s wind, the max it can fly in sport mode is 16m/s under control so very simply if it is going into a 10m/s wind it can still go 6m/s. With the wind it is still limited by software to 16m/s but with the wind behind it, it uses way less battery. That's why they always say "out into the wind, back with the wind" - with near-the-limit wind I have recorded it using around 5x more battery to go the same distance into the wind as coming back.
I took my DJI Mavik past its max limit in the Philippines ocean. The drone said it was coming back and I agreed. If there had been a headwind on return it would've been close.
I pay you deep respect for doing a long-distance flight test with this drone. My estimate at first was 1.5 - 1.7km. But I see that he reached 1.3km and very dramatically. I fly the Mavic 2 Zoom remotely as well, but always only over land. In open terrain. It is not good to fly over water. Never. If so, then only for a limited time, necessary. It's a drone and a loss about nothing else. But I'm surprised that the drone couldn't turn and fly to the shore, it was still carried as if by the wind. But I don't see any wind. Yes, the sport mode has more power from the motors, which would take more energy from the battery, but on the other hand, the drone would be more resistant to the wind and would fly forward better. Yet in Sports mode, the drone couldn't turn as far as you needed to. Strange. I think it also helps to reduce the altitude, where the wind current and calm are different, it might also help not to fly with the front of the camera in a turn to the shore, but to try to fly sideways of the drone to the shore. Right away, even in the distance, maybe 800m apart. Better to go for the drone on foot than to drown it in the water. Dramatic video. But a good ending. Thank you for the test. I saw at the end of the video how your hand was shaking, your nerves. I'm not surprised.
The DJI Mini batteries typically last around 25 to 30 minutes of flight time under optimal conditions. However, the exact time can vary based on factors like wind conditions, temperature, and flight style. If you're asking how quickly they lose power when not in use, they generally retain their charge for several days or weeks, but it's best to store them at around 50% charge to prolong battery life. Do you have a specific model in mind?
You are so courageous! On the way back, I would have flown it over the shoreline, just off the water, but the video would have been utterly boring. I prefer your video to any James Bond movie, because yours is real.
I'm thinking a Christmas present to self. :-) I've the Mini 3 Pro which I love but this I could carry in my back pack for hiking very easily and use it without holding everyone up in my group. Cheap too!
Nice video. Kept me to the edge of my seat. The drone almost did not make it. But how come you can fly it above water with no issues? Saw many comments and videos of their neos behave badly above water but yours fly great.

On the outbound leg there seemed to be an onshore breeze, on the return leg there was a stronger offshore breeze. Either way dropping lower on the return would have exposed the little Neo to less wind. The trees would have been a handy wind barrier to exploit.
ooph! I was sweating for you here in Scotland. I've had a similar situation here on one of our islands. After sending my Mini 3 Pro out over the ferries a little bit too far (you get carried away) I RTH ed it but it said (Like yours) critically low battery landing in location! I managed to cancel that and got it over the land but still over dense , high ferns. I managed to reach out far enough to catch it. And people look at some drone videos and think "how relaxing": if only they knew the truth! Lol! Glad you got yours back safe my friend. 🙂
Question: which mode saves battery life and is faster in an emergency when the drone is low on battery- let the Return to Home mode automatically return to home or overtake and manually fly the drone back? I honestly dont trust my phone is open spaces wifi is so unreliable
I wonder what mode is most efficient? Perhaps its not sport? I always wondered if the automatic return to home feature was the most efficient, is it smart enough to figure the wind speed and the resistance and track the best course. It's probably not that advanced. great video!!
At around 07:35 decreasing altitude and heading back towards shore is what I would advise. Decrease altitude to get out of the higher winds and also the home point had drifted off shore.
Nice stressful video! About the Normal mode while the remote is in Sport. If you've the remote in Sport before booting up the drone, it'll still start in Normal mode. You've got to set back remote to normal and then sport and the drone will switch. Quite annoying tbh!

That was WAY to close for comfort. You really pushed it right to the edge, 😮, thanks for risking it! And that footage is so pretty that i may need to get one of these.
next time lower your altitude, man. As soon as the drone started the forced landing, it became able to go closer to the shore. 70 meters high with such a tiny drone is way too dangerous because of the winds. however, congrats for your luck, I'm happy you didn't loose your lil' bird :)
That was entertaining man…! Was seriously wondering if that was a gonner… damn ! Thanks dude … quick one when it was trying to land were you still controlling to come back to home and u managed to move it over the rocks at the end or was that the DJI landing automation that took it there ?? Thanks
That’s nice! It’ll be really good if DJI or a good aftermarket company can make a battery adapter for 18650 batteries. Can you imagine what 5500mah at 20w/h can add to this range test?!
Thanks for the video. That was some hair-raising drama! I wonder if solid-state batteries will translate to drones - it would 10x the distance, even on 135g drones like this one
Something odd going on with the direction, that was not wind, it almost looked like it was on some sort of cruise mode and not flying in the direction you pointed it. I honestly did not think you were gonna make it back. Think this thing might have some bugs need ironing out. Some other guy said that once he got low battery warning he had 10 seconds before the drone decided to land right where it was at that moment.😮
Consider learning to fly FPV long range if you haven’t already, it’s a whole different thrill. There is a lot to learn but totally worth it. Enjoy your new drone.
Brilliant man!! Awesome video, scary but great fun, better than any thriller movie, perfect timing, thank you for sharing that. Just got my Neo but I ain't doing that!! 😂✌🤟🤘
same here i’m going to get in few days but not going to do this crazy test, but hates of to this man due to him people like us can really know the real test. 🫡
Great video man ! But please, restart the vid with sport mode lmao we absolutely need to see this result, not in normal mode, you need to re put the controller in sport mode if you have started the drone initially with sport mode
wonder how bad this damages the battery to kept it flying at 0.. i would mark that one and test it over time to see if the longevity of it is effected by the low discharge
I have faith there will be very useful software updates for this drone perhaps allowing better battery time and hopefully better tracking. Regardless for $200 it seems to be a great deal for those that don’t need the best and advanced video going on. And you can bet next year there will be a DJI NEO 2 with better batteries and perhaps other nice features for the camera. I have the Mavic Mini with the FlyMore package. Still flies great. Love DJI products.
Surprised how you could fly that far, in the city I found that I lost signal like even under 20 meters distance! 😅 But love the Neo and seeing some cool stuff on UA-cam this little beast.
@@flaviorenato3415 It's such a delicate balance between motor thrust, weight and battery capacity. This thing is basically a micro whoop, so I think you'd waste the extra battery power trying to make up for the added weight. Could be wrong.
Personally have not flown a drone and am considering buying of of these in the near future. Do you think bringing it back down to say 40m height rather than 70m would have helped? Seemed to me you were stuck in stronger winds pushing it out into the water more, wouldn't lowering it help get out of the stronger winds?
@@torontorc4637 You maybe right. As said I have never flown one but from watching the video it did seem the higher it went the more of a struggle it was to keep it from drifting.
Just curious because I've never flown one before, but are you able to go out of RTH mode, put it in manual mode and simply steered to land on the nearest shore and walked over to retrieve it? If so, that's what I would have done to prevent losing it in the water. Also, are there any options for making it "floatable" without affecting flight or weight too much?
Haha I too had a couple of very close calls recently, with my Mini2 that was fighting wind over a lake, and my Neo that kept losing lock with the RC, inexplicably (middle of nowhere, no interference!)
Felt like i was watching a suspense thriller movie 😂

agreed. this is the most crazy to the limit close call.... thx for the video.
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
next time lower your altitude, man. As soon as the drone started the forced landing, it became able to go closer to the shore. 70 meters high with such a tiny drone is way too dangerous because of the winds. however, congrats for your luck, I'm happy you didn't loose your lil' bird :)
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Show!!! Velocidade do vento?
That was entertaining man…! Was seriously wondering if that was a gonner… damn ! Thanks dude … quick one when it was trying to land were you still controlling to come back to home and u managed to move it over the rocks at the end or was that the DJI landing automation that took it there ?? Thanks
I was still able to control it but it was automatically landing. It doesn't get any closer than that
That’s nice! It’ll be really good if DJI or a good aftermarket company can make a battery adapter for 18650 batteries.
Can you imagine what 5500mah at 20w/h can add to this range test?!
Someone might make a mod
Cool & afflict NEO range test... lol!
Getting a follower!
Cheers from Brazil!
Thanks, I appreciate that👍🏾
Thanks for the video. That was some hair-raising drama! I wonder if solid-state batteries will translate to drones - it would 10x the distance, even on 135g drones like this one
That would be great if it would! Thanks for watching 👍🏾
I was at the edge of my seat rooting for your drone to make it back! haha
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Wow... Dustin Dunhill should see this.. breath taking range tester
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Can't even script that level of intensity. I'm expecting this drone in the mail any day now, doubt I would do what you just did though.
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Wow…😮 that was stressful… Something is up with that drifting though because it didn’t look like there was much wind. Thanks for sharing!
I think so, it wasn't windy at all
Wow! Good job returning it safely!
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
DJI NEO é espetacular, amo esse pequeno monstro
Yeah it's pretty awesome
Wow.. amazing views... the water looks crystal clear too. Would be great for scuba diving.
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Something odd going on with the direction, that was not wind, it almost looked like it was on some sort of cruise mode and not flying in the direction you pointed it.
I honestly did not think you were gonna make it back.
Think this thing might have some bugs need ironing out.
Some other guy said that once he got low battery warning he had 10 seconds before the drone decided to land right where it was at that moment.😮
Yeah that was pretty weird, something was definitely up. Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Consider learning to fly FPV long range if you haven’t already, it’s a whole different thrill. There is a lot to learn but totally worth it. Enjoy your new drone.
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Brilliant man!! Awesome video, scary but great fun, better than any thriller movie, perfect timing, thank you for sharing that. Just got my Neo but I ain't doing that!! 😂✌🤟🤘
same here i’m going to get in few days but not going to do this crazy test, but hates of to this man due to him people like us can really know the real test. 🫡
Thanks for watching, much appreciated 👍🏾
Wow! Great video amazing I feel nervous as well when I watched until end I am thinking landing on the water 😂😂😂 really amazing video ❤
I got really lucky 🤣. Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Bro I was laughing since 9% till landing! 😂 Great vid!
Thanks for checking it out
Thanks for taking a risk and sharing and spreading knowledge.
Great video man ! But please, restart the vid with sport mode lmao we absolutely need to see this result, not in normal mode, you need to re put the controller in sport mode if you have started the drone initially with sport mode
Yeah, stay tuned. Thanks for watching 👍🏾
wonder how bad this damages the battery to kept it flying at 0.. i would mark that one and test it over time to see if the longevity of it is effected by the low discharge
I think it might be ok, the fact that it said it critical and was landing. We'll see, but I used that battery the next day and I was fine
Finally I'm glad you have it in your hand......
Yeah I got lucky. Thanks for watching
It's a great drone with lots of features at a good price. Neo 2 will be awesome. Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Surprised how you could fly that far, in the city I found that I lost signal like even under 20 meters distance! 😅 But love the Neo and seeing some cool stuff on UA-cam this little beast.
Thanks for checking it out, much appreciated 👍🏾
Thanks for the laughs this morning!
Wow,one of craziest range test i have ever seen.
Thanks for watching
Was rooting for ya there mate
Thanks for watching 👍🏾
Starting of the video made my heart pound man......
Yeah it was pretty intense 😕
I want to see who will come up with the idea of putting two batteries in parallel, 50 grams more but I think it would be worth it!
I hope someone makes the plus battery for it. An extra 5-8 mins of flight time would be a great addition.
@@flaviorenato3415 It's such a delicate balance between motor thrust, weight and battery capacity. This thing is basically a micro whoop, so I think you'd waste the extra battery power trying to make up for the added weight. Could be wrong.
Oh man! When it was drifting towards the trees, I was getting worried! haha I thought the wind would take it away from you.
Thanks for checking out the video 👍🏾
wow a very thrilling flight nice vid buddy
Thanks for watching
Personally have not flown a drone and am considering buying of of these in the near future. Do you think bringing it back down to say 40m height rather than 70m would have helped? Seemed to me you were stuck in stronger winds pushing it out into the water more, wouldn't lowering it help get out of the stronger winds?
I don't think it was that much more windy up higher. The hight is what saved it from the water, more time to land
That's what we signed up for in this hobby🤣
