Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and went on to become one of the most influential, innovative, and successful groups in modern music, having sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. When they were recording this track, there was a black Labrador Retriever that wandered around their house and they would feed it. When it came time to name the song, they couldn’t think of an obvious choice. Lo and behold, this dog wanders in and thus “Black Dog” became its name.
And that house was Headley Grange, a shrine & temple for the Gods of rock.

i heard a different version when they were recording this song in the studio a few times a dog ran in and interfered with the recording so they called it the black dog)

This song has it all. The offbeat drumming, Jimmy's riffs, Robert's high note...haunting backdrop. It's probably top 5, if not the best song ever.
And John Paul Jones made the riff...He's my favourite Bass player of all-time...well they are all my favourite musicians of all-time :)
I watched Page and Plant perform this live in Toronto on their No Quarter tour in March 1995. They absolutely NAILED it.

I came from a family that wasn't very musical. It wasn't something I grew up with. I was 15 and a freshman in high school on the bus home from an away soccer game. I was a 9th grader on the JV team and a senior on varsity put Led Zeppelin IV on his boom box. "Black Dog" starts and I'm blown away. After the song is over, I go to boom box guy and ask him, "Dude, what was that?". He looks at me with a weird expression on his face and says, "You don't know who Led Zeppelin is?". The rest, as they say, is history. Still my favorite band to this day.
Jimmy Page's solo at the end of the song is one of the best ever.
This is the first ever song I heard played by Led Zeppelin. I was in my room that I shared with my older brother and the second I heard this is such a profound moment of sound that has ever passed through my ears at the time. I was probably 5 or 6 years old it was so awesome hearing this.
Who compares today? And not just to them to Sabbath, Purple, CSN&Y, EL&P, Wishbone .... too many to mention. A time never to be repeated. A vibration in the ether of society that has been lost forever. I long for my youth - and not just because I am old now - no for the way it felt to be alive then.
People are a little bit uptight these days. I'm glad the old heads took me under their wing in the late 70's and early 80's. A grandmother who was a flapper in the roaring 20's didn't hurt either. Those folks got down, and they didn't have modern pharmaceuticals, just booze.
Riff by John Paul Jones. Celebrate this man! Write songs and poems about this epic musician and treasure him while he still lives!
Jimmy's killer riffs and Robert's great vocals in this song ,and many others, are some of the main reasons that got me into 70s rock as a whole. Brilliant.

Most, I say most because there is plenty of modern music that is excellent yes but for a big portion of it, it is just reinvented rubbish that doesn’t come close to bands like Led Zepplin. Name me a group today that is as ground breaking and original as Led Zepplin was and really still is.

These men had their Day in the sun, 10years they rules the rock world. I was lucky enough to see them in 75, great concert, loud , but not the earth shattering I was expecting. Still together, there is no better rock band

The setting: a coffee shop in my Michigan hometown ~1971. A 12-year-old me drops a quarter in the jukebox and selects Black Dog for shock value. Old Ruth, the owner, doesn’t even blink an eye. She has probably heard it all and seen it all. But I think it’s the coolest song ever and that I am ALL THAT!

And Bonham Vs Ringo should even be up for a debate.
Beatles just had the advantage of having more pop singles than Zeppelin did and are better lyric writers. That’s that.

This is an incredible piece of music from simply put the greatest rock band ever . If you listen you can hear Bonham locking this down with his steady thundering groove in 4/4. While Page is playing around that in 9/8 in the hook. Hammer of the Gods
Have spent the last two weeks learning to play black dog. The part with the extra beat was bar far the hardest. Rock n roll!

JPJ initially had this song in 3/16. It was a walk in the park for him but the rest of the band struggled with it. He even had to tell bonham how to play it, telling him that if he played straight it would eventually fall back into time.
I grew up on songs like that, along with the rolling stones and Jimi Hendrix, the best of all times.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
