Thanks for watching the video mate. First time for me doing cycling overseas trip and I’m really glad I got to do it with my wife. Makes us want to do another cycling trip next year ☺️
@joshkwan oh is it? Wow... Yeah, I've seen another video on the Shimanami Kaido trip from Trash Taste (an anime podcast channel), it covered the "most direct route". And even then, with 70 ish km and supposed half day trip (at least that's what they did), I dare say it's TOO short 😂
Japan is one f our favourite travel destinations and this video just made it even more attractive. Can’t wait to do this route when we are there next time. Kudos to Jess and Sota for smashing their rides ❤
Thank you so much! It’s a really fun route, so beautiful and also not too difficult, especially if you get an ebike. There is a Giant store too which has higher quality road bikes which you might prefer.
Haha yea I should have brought a jacket on the first day. I was very cold hahaha. When it was sunny it was alright, but there’s was a few times where it wasn’t. Accomodation was perfect and I highly recommend.
Awesome! Despite living here in Japan for more than a decade I ironically haven't tried this route yet. A bit far from a Tokyoite like me despite being also a cyclist, definitely gonna check this route next year when I visit the area. Your guides were the first thing I checked when I visited Sydney for work (rented a road bike), so It's pretty nice to see you visiting Japan too. While Tokyo is mostly an urban jungle, you can actually reach the nice rural areas for cycling pretty easily due to the availability of trains here. I just get a bike bag (called Rinko here), then hop onto a trip to the nearby quiet mountain roads available here, they can be pretty scenic as well, though a lot of climbing XD. Then take the train back home afterwards, kinda similar to how you guys did a quick rural ride by taking a car ride outside the city on your previous vid.
Yea I fully understand, I think it’s almost 3 or 4 hours from Tokyo to get to Onomichi. So maybe have to do it as a multi day trip to make it worthwhile. Thanks for the tips on riding around Tokyo, if I go back to Japan on a cycling focused trip I’d love to check out rural areas around Tokyo.
@@joshkwan No problem! Definitely a bit far from here XD, I might do the similar strategy like you did where you started from Kyoto which is a place I visit a number of times a year. The public transport via trains definitely is the key at least for being a cyclist in the city haha, tons of variation possible too depending on how far you'd wanna go via train as your starting point.
Yes, I highly recommend. I reckon if you have extra time make it a 3 or 4 day trip and visit all the islands in their entirety! We missed alot of the side quests.
You missed a hidden gem. Yumeshima Kaido is a relatively new cycling path right next to Shimanami Kaido. You can take a short ferry ride from Habu Port on Innoshima, and start riding from any of the island.
Great video and my trips booked for May so looking forward to the second part and planning it well! I'll be bringing a 3.5 year old along, did you by any chance see cyclists with children's attachments on their bikes? Thanks for consistently great content mate!
Hey mate, I’ll answer this here directly since it’s actually something I don’t address in my second video. There are e-bikes you can hire with a child seat. I think these are from Red Bicycle from my memory. Just make sure you can hire them one way, and not have to return them same day. Thanks for watching the videos mate! Appreciate it
@@joshkwan amazing thank you! I’ll have a look into that, I just didn’t want to rock up with a 3 year old and have no options to get her across the bridges haha
@@arnoldpoon4660 Also check out Better Bicycles. I think Red Bicycles is a trailer, whereas Better Bicycles offer a rear seat. All the best with your trip, I hope I can finish editing part 2 tonight, and have it ready for upload tomorrow :)
Highly recommend this trip! You always have the option as well to do the direct route and split it 35km each day. Gives plenty of time for other activities and makes the ride a bit easier :) The ride feels quite safe, even when riding on the road the cars were respectful and passed with plenty of room.
I finally featured on a cycling video, what an honour!
Hopefully the first of many 😜
Thanks for coming along, it was lots of fun. I ended up using lots of your footage too, so thank you!
I hope you turned on the motor on day 2!
@@veryboringname. spoiler: I did 😂 (and I regretted not using it on Day 1)
@@SotaMaehara Phew! I would have died on Kirosan without a motor. Maybe one day I will be like Josh!
Mad respect for riding all day without the electric motor!!
I was so surprised to see you riding a bike in Japan, my home country. I'm glad you enjoyed Japan I also love Shimanami Kaido.
I’m really happy I made the time to do this trip. It was a highlight of my holiday!
What a journey. One of the best rides in the world
For sure, thanks for the e-bike tip haha
Your vibe is excellent. I’m doing this in July, cannot wait.
Shot mate, looking forward to part 2
Thanks mate, appreciate you checking out the vids
I'm going to Japan in April and this ride is on my to do list. Great to see a sneak peek
Awesome! Glad I could give you a preview. Have a great trip in April
As a cyclist that would love to visit Japan, I'm really gonna consider doing this...great content as always bro.

Thanks Chris! Appreciate you checking out the video.
I can highly recommend this cycling route if you ever find yourself in that part of Japan :)
Looks amazing mate
Thanks so much!
Josh fantastic clip. Really enjoyed it and I had no idea this all existed. Thanks

This trip (especially this longer version) is definitely going to my bucket list 👌
hopefully with my own minivelo bike at that ❤
There’s plenty of opportunity to make the route even longer, or check out some side activities. I would highly recommend doing it as a multi day trip!

I think you would love it. As you can see we took about 5-6 hours to do 70km. It’s very leisurely and plenty of stops for food and viewpoints.
beautiful! i was rly excited for you guys. my dream is to also bike here with my husband one day. can't wait for part 2 🤘🏻✨

Thanks very much mate
It is well worth the trip down to Onomichi
Love your representation for the cycling community mate!
Thank you, and thanks for watching :)
What a great ride! I did it in early Dec and had a light jacket and was freeeezing! The accommodation looked great... shoutout to Eugene too!

Bravo! Japan made an avid cyclist out of this Aussie too.
It’s a beautiful country, and also feels very safe to ride around.
Oh you traveled Japan. It’s also my dream destination. Great video and storytelling!
It really is beautiful, I hope you can visit one day.
Great video Josh 😊
Thank you
Excellent :-). My wife and I are heading over there in April next year. Can you provide us a link on how to hire the Specialized Vados?
This is the service I used: wakka.site/

Thanks for the suggestion! I will have to go back there and do this route
Last year I rode through the alps bikepacking from the outskirts of Tokyo to Osaka. Most amazing thing I’ve ever done!
Japan is a very nice country to ride in. The car are respectful, the food is delicious and the views are stunning!
I must try Osaka to Tokyo one day.

Now that's what I call a great day out 👌🍻. Those Vados are great, are they 45 km/h speed restricted like here in NZ?
Haha I believe they’re actually 30km/hr speed restricted. At least that’s what they are in Australia as well.
45km/hr is nuts! (But would be fun)
What's your stills camera and gear setup for cycling/travelling? Waterproof sling?
Fujifilm x100f
I’m using the sling bag from Pedal Mafia and Sympl. Not a massive bag, but big enough to hold a power bank, my wallet and my phone.

Please let me know what's the nane of the accommodation?
What did you think of the e-bikes?
Love it. E-bikes make getting around so much easier, especially if you want to have a chill ride without getting all sweaty.
