Hello, I hope you enjoy watching our ride through Japan. Lots of people have asked about our route, and other questions about planning, so I've put together a mini-FAQ here: oscarboyd.substack.com/p/how-to-cycle-the-length-of-japan.
What an absolute legend! Really enjoyed watching this from start to finish mate. I gave out a cheer when you turned the corner to reveal Mount Chokai towering over Yamagata’s coastline. It felt like going home again 🍻
This is some of the best film making I've seen on UA-cam. This could be on the BBC. What a great job filming, editing and producing this. And what an amazing, amazing human journey. Thank you for sharing this on UA-cam.
Awesome video bro! Loved hearing the toads (hehe, you know me). What beautiful scenery - and the cafes/restaurants looked so freakin good. So well filmed, edited and narrated, and it's nice to hear some of my music soundtracking your amazing journey ❤
It really is a cyclists paradise! I live in the UK and I've been visiting and cycling in Japan for the last ten years where cyclists are shown respect from drivers and people in general, which makes it much safer for cyclists. The country is beautiful and the food is exquisite. Sadly, good Japanese food is generally difficult to find in the UK. Brilliant video, thank you! Yay!
Thank you for coming to Japan and made this amazing video. This show me how beautiful this my country is. Now I want to ride where I've never been, especially TOHOKU, but I must wait next Spring!
What an amazingly beautiful and truly inspirational storytelling of probably one of the most fantastic bike packing trips. This one is definitely topping my bucket list now. Congratulations to this video! I hope it'll stay on UA-cam for eternity. Arigato gozaimasu! Otsukaresama.
WOW, this one is Truly Special! As an avid cyclist, photographer and Japanophile, I absolutely appreciate the work and effort that went into it's creation, Well Done and be proud, is what I say. This will be shared with friends and rewatched, many times!
there is so, so much beauty in this planet, and i don´t think i´ve ever seen a better showcase of it, than this video here. i´ve been living in Japan for a long time now and have actually visited a few of the landmarks you showed here. the fact that you got your cameras to capture not only the landscapes, but also their beauty, peacefulness, and their grandness, speaks volumes of your abilities as a videographer. i teared up several times during this video... i can only hope to ever see more landscapes as half as beautiful as the ones you captured. that is, unless i grab my bike and start pedaling too... 🤔
The way you put the film together is perfect, it was such a good watch and i’m sure you have inspired a lot people just like me to explore japan on 2 wheels ✌️
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful ride. Watching it was a pleasure and 45 min flew by like nothing. Oh and awesome shots and editing in my opinion!
Superb....having just cycled the length of France, I feel humbled by your wonderful adventure. And, as I lived a few years in Hokkaido, it was great to revisit familiar territory. Arigato.
Absolutely amazing! The adventure itself as well of course, but most "travel" videos of this length are just someone sticking a GoPro to the handlebar and riding along without any commentary. This is proper documentary style and I can't think of a better video I've ever watched about cycling through Japan.
Amazing video! I’m so happy I just stumbled upon your channel. I was a long-time listener of Deep Dive and now I finally get more of your story-telling!
Thank you for including the map. Bike-packing videos rarely have one, but it is so interesting to see the progress while watching the video. Also, your storytelling is marvelous, like listening to an audiobook. 😃
I do some long routes, but this is amazing! I may eventually download the GPX files, but this may be a retirement type trip! You guys had some horrendous rain but good on you for gutting it out! Thanks for the splendid images!
I've been to Japan and absolutely adore it. Plus, I'm a very keen cyclist so this was beautiful to watch. Amazing video guys. Gives me an itch for more wanderlust. Very inspirational. Chapeau!
Seicomart! Absolute proof you made it to Hokkaido! 😁Can't get enough of the place, but it amazes me that you had any time at all for even brief sightseeing with the daily distance you had to cover. Well done!
Every now and again UA-cam recommendations works as I hoped it would and introduces me to wonderful content. Thank you for sharing your amazing adventure. I enjoyed every moment of your journey.
congratulations, man.. for the journey.. THAT IS EPIC thank you for share all the experience and very nice documented video once agai n congratulations for both of you
Thanks for the great video! Looks like an amazing adventure with great mates! I fell in love with (cycling in) Japan so much i married into the place and helped repopulate it a little bit!👩❤️👨👦👦... In my time there over the years Ive also ridden all 4 main islands in my time and experienced the ecstacy of great food, people, roads and scenery / agony of cooking sun, hammering rain and tunnels of terror! 😂👍... Your video brought great back memories 懐かしいですね! Like you at the end of the day would i do it all again? もちろん!!! Thanks again for the great video, g'day from west Australia and hope to catch you on the road in Japan one day! 😂👍🇦🇺🇯🇵🚴🚴🚴🚴
Thank you sooo much for thinking about this and doing a video about it. I've been in love with Japan for a long time, and I like to go by bicycle, but seeing this, I just wondered why I never thought about doing something similar.
As a bike rider, due to a vision problem that is just bad enough, I cant pass the eye test. You guys did okay. 62 miles a day is not too bad. As long as you plan at least one rest day every 4 to 5 days. Thanks for taking me along. Oh, and I ride a two wheeled recumbent bike.
Such an awesome video production of a great cycling journey in Japan! Absolutely great! I am a cyclist (well, sort of) myself. I am a Japanese national living in Tokyo area and have done Sapporo-Hakodate, Asahikawa-Cape Soya and some ride in Oita (which is my hometown). This video makes me want to cycle more places! Thank you for this fabulous video!
Since you said you’d do it again, some thoughts on potential detours and/or alternative routes that might make sense- * Shimanami Kaido, beautiful sea view and wonderful islands. Not sure how best to continue once you reach Honshu though. * Toyama Bay. Said to be one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Probably doable if the route cuts through Honshu near Biwako (also a nice spot), * Tokaido. Beautiful sealine, and Hakone in the middle for awesome onsen. Downside is it takes you to Yokohama and things get worse quickly beyond that. * Niseko is also Japan’s top spot for Gravel cycling so… I don’t know, just throwing it out there I guess.
I loved your footage! I planned to do something similar in 2021. But covid came so I changed my plans. But now I am determined to do it somewhere in the future. Next year I will retire and plan to do the GDMBR first. When I cycle Japan and South Korea I plan to go there and back without the use of a plane! An adventure definitely! Thank you again!👍🇳🇱
The next adventure will be the GDMBR. I will use a drone for the first time. Maybe I will document the adventure in time through UA-cam. But during the GDMBR I think I will use Polarsteps. Still 6 months to go…😜
Incredible journey you did, amazing in such mountainous country with narrow road, not so good for cycling, must be exhausting and faced some dangerous occasions. Hope you would come back again, please cycle along Okhotuk in Hokkaido Island and Pacific coast of Northern Honshu to Tokyo.
I spent 5 incredible and life shaping years in Japan, beginning 1978 till end 1982. Watching this has made me feel so home sick - brilliant and well done on such a big bike adventure
Hey, I watch a lot of bikepacking videos. A LOT. Wistfully dreaming about the day I have the bravery to take my own adventure. I need you to know this is the best one I've seen. Period. Beautiful in its simplicity and positivity. You expertly show the ins and outs of each place you travel to. I'm here at 6.9k views and that seems criminal to me. Well done.

Thanks man, and for all the tips in the Sakata area! She's the gift that keeps on giving, and an absolutely stunning bit of coastal road.
If Mr. Affable himself likes this guy, I will definitely check out his channel ❤
Was like Chris and Conner, with less complaining hahaha.... Great job guys
Take some notes on his appropiate choice of bicycletype and saddle height😅
Did I recognise the long blue bridge where Pete nearly met his end? 😂

very unforgettable experience.... a very nice adventure of a lifetime...
Looked amazing... some proper Type 2 Fun at times though!
The temple you slept in Koyasan is absolutely mind blowing. It is so damn pretty in Japan !
Great story, well filmed and superbly edited.
Cool, I have cycled most of Japan about 10 years ago =)
I recommend anyone to venture out of Japan's big cities, and into smaller cities, and towns. It's a very different experience. This is true Japan
Wow this is one of the great cycling adventure in Japan. Keep up the awesome work. 💯👍
