  • Sculpfun has brought out a new line of lasers with the S30 series that now include limit switches and an upgraded control board that features automatic air control. We are testing out the 5-watt version in this video, and we'll test out how it does on engraving, cutting, and create a few projects.
    Thanks to Geekbuying.com for providing the laser for this review. Find out more about it at the link below.

    I got one of these as my first about a month or so ago. I’ve had somewhat a good trial run, but your video is a game changer. I was missing half my manual and couldn’t figure out what half the stuff was for. I had my laser way too far away from my material literally burning my wood. Used the spacer thing and it’s great now. Haha. Thank you!

    Really cool to see that the X axis was switched for something way more sturdier than the one in the Sculpfun S9. The whopping 3k/mm speed is amazing.

    Your the first person to answer my question before I asked. I don't like a lot of the performance videos because everyone is using maximum power and I have read you shouldn't go above 70 or 80 percent power.
    So thank you for the video.

    They're shipping these with rubber hoses now- no more kinks. I was lucky enough to get one with the rubber hoses. I've got the 10 watt pro version with the 900x900 expansion- just got it fully working last night and did an hour long test burn. Gotta say I am majorly impressed by these things!

      That’s good to hear that they changed the air line. Always nice when companies take feedback to improve their products.

    I’m aiming for the 10w..thinking for 20w but it’s too expensive..do you think it’s worth it?

    how is this on sanded basswood planks?

    Mine arrived on Saturday, it's pretty good compared to my previous Ortur LM2. It's more Powerful than the Ortur 15w module😂.
    Verry sturdy build, not so nice is the Cablemanagement.

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  Рік тому

      I agree that the cable management is lacking in many of the diode lasers out there recently. I can’t imagine that adding some cable chain would add that much to the cost of the laser.

    Looks like a pretty nice little laser. Not a fan of having the thumb screws in the back though. Not sure what they were thinking there. 🤔 Good video Steve.

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  Рік тому

      Yeah, it's a bit awkward, and even more so if you have a tight enclosure, on the other hand, at least the screws in the back are not pinching in on a dovetail joint that will eventually wear out like some other designs. Overall for a $300 laser, it's a nice way to get started in the hobby.

    how good is this for acrylic cutting 3mm or what would be the max size. thanks

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  Рік тому +1

      On darker opaque acrylics like solid black it will work okay on thinner material. But on clear, translucent and lighter colors, the diode lasers will go right through them.

    Thinking about getting this model. How does it handle engraving leather? Love the vids.

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  Рік тому

      I have not tried leather with this model but it should work okay. I’ve used the 10w diodes on various leather with good results so you might want to jump up to that model as it would give you more flexibility in power for various materials. Either one should have plenty of detail for engravings.

    Thanks this was very helpful. I am very keen to get started but on a budget so this model seems to fit the bill. I'm just wondering if it's possible to upgrade the laser to a 10w or 20w at a later date or would you have to buy a whole new machine? Thanks, Jay.

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  Рік тому +1

      You should be able to jump up to the 10w, although you might need to ensure it comes with the larger power supply. The 20w might have a beefier frame to handle the extra weight of the module. I have the S30 Pro Max 20w module in the queue for review, so I can speak more about it shortly.

      @@Vintauri That's great, thanks you've gained a new subscriber. I'll make sure to do more research before hand. Either way this 5w model seems a perfect starter option.

    Good video, do you ever run the air assist when engraving?

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  Рік тому +2

      It depends on the set up of the laser. If I have some control over the airflow, I prefer to run low air assist on engravings to help keep debris from the lens, but too much air can also create a less crisp burn on engravings.

    Awesome video! Is it also possible to engrave on stainless steel using this laser?

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  11 місяців тому

      It will be slow but you can mark it but it's not a real engrave. It will discolor the metal to a dark brown almost black color with enough heat.

    I have a S9 and I want to add a second 5w due to the quality o the engravings.. Will the s30 5w produce the same great dark engravings?! because the air nozzle is different from the s9

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  4 місяці тому

      It should produce similar dark engravings, but you'll need to play with the speeds and line interval to get the desired result.

    ok...I am 10 hours into this machine and still cannot get it to work. I have watched so many videos and all of them have the cord coming from the main base where the on/off switch is with 3 white connectors coming from it. One for the air pump and two more for the X&Y connections. My main cord coming from that base ONLY HAS the air pump connector. There is nothing else coming from the base for the X&Y connectors. I have the other ones plugged into the Limit Switches. I am beginning to think that it is not me and I have the wrong set up with mine. Do you know if they have upgraded this feature and excluded the step of having those coming from main box and they are already connected inside the box? Looks like the ones that are supposed to hook up to it go to the Limit switches. Can you confirm or deny this. Lastly, I cannot get the laser to go to the home space or engrave yet. Soooooooooo frustrated. Thanks for the video...Kelli

      Unfortunately I can't say if they changed the design as I've not had the opportunity to see any newer Sculpfun machines. All the Sculpfun lasers I've assembled with limit switches had the connectors for x and y switches and had labels on them for that. It may be that some of the short wires for your board were missed in the factory assembly. If the machine will not move when powered on then I'd be looking at the wires for the stepper motors to be sure they are solidly connected. With the lack of wires for your limit switches I fear there may be other wires not plugged into the control board inside the box with the power switch. Unfortunately without being able to take a close look, this is my best guess.

    Why would one use less than 100% power? Isn't just increasing the speed a better option?

    • @Vintauri
      @Vintauri  Рік тому

      Generally that would be the first preference but you do run the risk of overheating your laser faster when running it at 100% power. So some will sacrifice speed for longevity. I personally go for the fastest speed and the highest power that suits the job I’m doing.
