An entire video on the difference between a game's narrative and its gameplay and the possibly unintended side-effects of that.
Without using the words "ludonarrative dissonance".
    Bravo.

I'd rate the video a solid 8 out of 10 just by the writing and execution! I really appreciate the time taking into sitting sources, and I found it phenomenal you where able to bounce back between anti-capitalist meanings when needed, and right back into your criticism of the game!
I would suggest next time compering games that do these themes correctly, if any are to be thought of, heck you could pull a Jacob Geller and bring up shows and film! Non the less wonderful video!

Damn that's a nuanced take. (Loving the look btw) Seeing how you highlighted Hardspace's issues, it makes me think of Papers Please. Like, every decision to guard your job prolongs your game, but there's several really good decisions that cut the game short to make a statement about what a nation with strict borders might value over a more humane cause. I never got deep enough into Hardspace to see where it went, and I just assumed the empty-huskness would've remained to let you think about what the gameplay and framing alone alludes to. So thanks for taking us home to the ending, that's crazy about the lack of systemic changes in its biggest moments.

Really good points! I played Hardpsace when it was in early access, when there was only the first few beats of story. It was actually decent, and felt a bit like an audio book that I got to occasionally listen to while I worked. Seeing how it got implemented in the full game, though... I'm disappointed. IMO, they either should've tried to stick with the audiobook format throughout (maybe moved the people to a different company that you got to watch) and take the hit on the effectiveness of their commentary, or make things way more immersive. I really liked your idea of having the PC be Kaito - on top of what you mentioned, it would give them the chance to make their points clear through an inner monologue from Kaito, or maybe a journal.
The only thing I really disagree with is your criticism of the after game. It's after the story mode, and as such I don't really think it bears much weight. Completely removing most levels of challenge would leave the people who came for the gameplay instead of the commentary feeling disappointed that they got no reward (except for the scary red number going away, which is AWFUL - in my time playing early access, clawing my way out of debt felt like at least semi-legitimate progress, taking it away after is like removing the points system from old NES games) and the game becoming objectively easier. The game definitely needed more content for after the game, but I don't think removing the challenge of a time limit is the answer.
Still, really solid video! Love your content, Connor.

So it's kind of like the Truffaut Effect. Like how you can't actually make an anti-war movie. Because a film by its very definition must be a compelling visual image, which means the war must be depicted in a compelling manner.

  • @Mechaphiliac

So I think you're not giving enough consideration to the one point in the story where you do interact with it, Industrial Action. You don't ever have to do it. You can just keep your head down and keep working and nothing will ever happen to you. Whether by design or by accident, the game has centered the player as the catalyst for the movement.

I wish they just... didnt do the story like most of us Early Access players rallyed for.
We just wanted more ships not some story that is just not done well, Most of the Early access had no new ships which is the NAME sake of the game.

heavily disagree. people tend to play video games to escape reality, not to be reminded of how awful it is, so pushing the political message more would make most folks want to play it less. Hardspace, in my opinion, is a perfect balance, it has it's political undertones and story on the side, while keeping the core gameplay in tact. y'know, the part you probably bought the game for. remove the story entirely and it's still a fun space game where you tear ships apart.
it's been shown many times before, games with bad story but solid gameplay (Battlefield, Chivalry) tend to survive a lot better than games with good story but bad gameplay (pretty much any walking sim). as much as I love story games (Oneshot is my absolute number one favorite of all time, and i usually really dislike RPG puzzle games) the gameplay should really come first, so I don't believe sacrificing gameplay for the story, as you seem to be suggesting, is a very good idea...

My personal favourite example of anti-capitalism in gaming is Cruelty Squad. The game is a disgusting biopunk mess of broken textures, some of the most vile sounds the human ear can handle and more. Similar to Hardspace, death has to be paid for, but death is also nonexistent within the world. People pay to live, but dying removes your ability to die, severing your divine light. There is not end to the megacorp hellspace that exists within the world.
Words cannot describe the game, go play Cruelty Squad.

  • @GoldenH

Have to disagree with you, lets take the idea of playing kai. Reality is a mess because we don't have agency unless we make it. The game giving us a forced choice is no choice at all. Having an NPC make a choice lets the story show the consequences they want to teach about. In a game already full of heavy handed moralizing, giving the player a choice and then punishing them for that choice only dissociates that player from it.

A time stamp for when spoiler warning ends would be nice. I still haven't finished the game but would like to at some point.
And now, a bit of rambling:
I wonder if like to dislike ration that return youtube dislikes shows me is accurate for this video... On an unrelated note, I like how Abigail Thorn always playfully jokes about her transgender situation, even if the video in question is not really connected to the topic.
And a little bit closer to subject: it does look jarring when you switch to camera, especially since I'm used to hearing your voice from behind the screen from the payday 2 days. It's also curious that you don't bother girlvoicing in your videos. I wonder if you do this because you don't feel the need to, or is it because you feel it would alienate even more of your audience. But, as I say for myself, it would be a shame to trade your usual voice with all of its range to just one voice.
