Kraftwerk ride high
German godfathers of electronica peddle their way into the people of Manchester's hearts
03 July 2009 - Kraftwerk wheeled out some surprises during their unique performance at the Manchester Velodrome last night (2 July), which saw the British Olympic cycling team ride round the venue whilst the band played.
The German pioneers of electronica are well known for their love of cycling so the Velodrome was a fitting venue.
However, it was a couple of minutes into the song Tour De France, that the names of the Olympic Gold-winning cycling team were announced from the stage with a thick German accent.
Each member proceeded to appear from behind the band and cycle round the purpose built track, much to the delight of the crowd.
The cyclists rode up and down in a wave-like formation, an image then mirrored by elaborate visual effects on screens behind the stage.
Most of the audience agreed this was the highlight of the show.
"I think I died and went to heaven when the cyclists came out for Tour De France. Thats the best track and action I've ever seen working together - it's my gig of the year," said one enthusiastic fan.
Another added: "It was absolutely fantastic, seeing the Olympic team cycle round the track was amazing and it gave the music so much energy."
Kraftwerk played a two hour show altogether. The first half saw them romp through the best-known songs from their back catalogue.
Trans Europe Express, Man Machine, Computer Love, The Model and Autobahn were particularly well received by the crowd.
But the treats didn't end there. For part two, the band emerged from behind a light show, dressed in luminous green outfits set against a backdrop of 3D visuals that required the audience to wear special glasses.
The lyrics of tracks including Radioactivity and Computer World were then thrown out at a Velodrome full of 3D spec wearers in futuristic style.
It made for an impressive encore and at the end of the set, as deadpan as ever, each of the current four members of the Kraftwerk line-up left the stage one by one.
"He´s not only a robot, he´s a GERMAN robot."XD This sounds so funny, especially when you´re from germany.
@Brenton Scothorn bot
@Anthony Mustafa bot
I would think German robots would be the most efficient to maximize creativity. 🤖
Germans' can birth creativity from nothing at all taking silence to create noise......
you probably dont care but does anyone know of a method to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost the password. I would appreciate any help you can give me!
I never knew Ralf-Bot had such a golden voice
my favorite line of him is "........"
And he's cute too)
Talk about German efficiency - the band don't even have to turn up to their own gigs!
slowly getting addicted to this band more and more
"Kraftwerk is a European band, with German passports- and we're touring the world."
That's a very good answer, in just a few words. I guess Mr. Huetter has that ability to put a lot of meaning in a few words, the way Kraftwerk has the ability to put a lot of emotion into synth pulses and a drum-machine beat.
Just as Prince would eventually follow with
Ralfie is not a huetter. He is a hütter
Pardon me, but I am personally aware of a number of women who are fanatical in their appreciation of Kraftwerk.
Yeah... I’ve loved them right from the beginning...
I can't help but feel very offended by it and I'm male non binary
I love Ralf's sense of humour.
I love the robot keeps turning his heard toward the interviewer, he just has this look of "What the hell are you on about?" on his face.
😂
*I'm always inspired by total silence*
and then I compose music
Yeah. If she would shut up....
Just like Beethoven

'I want to listen to ...'
Und noise
Greatest electronic band ever...No one else can top these guys.
Maybe Art of Noise, or at least they're equal, and I think Kraftwerk got some inspiration from them.
Art of noise came much later... you clearly need to study.
@@jeromelambe2449indeed
Daft Punk might come very close
Actually the robot/mannequin thing came about when a German music magazine wrote about the stage performances by Kraftwerk and said their movements were sparse like the emotions of a schaufensterpuppe/mannequin. This inspired them to write Schaufensterpuppe and then to elaborate on it with We are The Robots, The Model etc and finally it turned into an half-ironic stage concept.
When I watch their videos, I can't tell if they're humans becoming robots, or robots turning into real people.
@@bradlemmond did u find the answer? I still cant
That's hilarious. We Are The Robots was my gateway to Kraftwerk and still my favorite song by them.
Incorrect.
The title Man-Machine was written in a journal, and after viewing Metropolis at a nightclub, the group, bit by bit, overlaid this aesthetic onto a session where Ralf had already composed baseline to The Robots (untitled at that time).
@@reinforcedpenisstem Well, Kraftwerk members told me this . I think that they are a reliable source.
I'm 15, I'm fangirling all over this. I love these guys, they've ruined my little teenage life oh man :'D
Now you're 25. 10 years have passed. What can you tell us about?
@@aeciosxtnr I still have all the vinyl and listen to them on the reg. safe to stay teenage me had other things going on tho, but a highlight either way.
"Planet Rock" wasn't the first hip hop record, but it shattered the paradigm....
Thanks for the truth
*Extremely* proud to be a female Kraftwerk fan.
no one cares what gender you are
Not like other girls, are we?
@cyanghost109 i'm Proud To be a Living Creature Kraftwerk fan
I was actually surprised when she said that, because my best female friends love them too.
But yesss..... When I saw them in Düsseldorf on a concert, there where much more men.
@@dedpxl She's mentioning that because the presenter said almost all Kraftwerk fans are men. Did you pay attention?
I'm sure human Ralf is hidden somewhere answering the questions in real time
He has a walkie talkie inside the robot and talks from it XD
Nope, pre-recorded, sorry.
Yeah there's noway that bot is an AI
@@yesman8074 And it sounds a lot like ralf!
We in BRASIL still LOVE KRAFTWERK 👍💥🇧🇷🇩🇪🤩👏
....love them since their beginning in the sixties!
After finishing Wolfenstein II, it's good to see that not all German robots want me dead.
😆😆😆
I think that a Kraftwerk song needs to be in a Wolfenstein game
Tell her, it's KRAFTWERK not kraftwork!
Exactly!
werk and work have the same roots...
*@Emanuel Greipel*
*You must be a Werkaholic ;)*
@@emanuelgreipel9074 no not really XD
É irritante escutar a todo momento Kraftwork.
Ralf's ignorance, "talk to my robot!"
I love Kraftwerk. They spoke to me from the first time I heard them. It is no surprise that you hear their influence in most modern music.
I have always found Ralf Hutter oddly engangeing. He is the same age as one of my oldest friends - 62 who is now chubby silver haired but stills enjoys Kraftwerk. When I was around his apartment recently we both had great fun watching the "Maximun Minimum" DVD
Decades ahead of their time
Kraftwerk are the true legends of electronic music, I'm an avid Kraftwerk fan and I encorp their music when I am doing dj music sessions, one thing is for sure that these guys are the best German electronic band ever no holds barred.
Several years ago in Poland waited for the Chemical brother's to play. No backup band... Instead I heard the Man Machine played incredibly loud and fantastic....After gig bought better amp and speakers. Fact
I saw them in Brixton in 1978....to this day......beautiful.
Thank you for posting this! I've loved Kraftwerk for just over 20 years. Even meeting one of their robots would be amazing.
these guys have written music history! love from germany and peace
🎹This band is fantastic, thanks to all the different band members we have had in this band, thanks to them we would not of had bands like,Depeche Mode OMD and Petshop Boys. Thanks Chaps.😊
Numbers, at the end!
That's the most I've seen Ralf move on stage since any 1980's footage I've seen on youtube! Very exciting.
Thanks for the upload.
Trans Europe Express was ahead of it time and generally a classic in my eyes 💯💯🔥🔥
It was very ahead of it's time. It has the word "trans".
"Technik durch Vorsprung"
That's the motto of Audi.
other way around...
Your analysis couldn't really be any better than this. Congratulations, thumbs up for you dude
I love living in a world where we interview robots made after celebrities
in 70s, can anybody expect such a music which has relevance even now? they are the fathers of electronic. match their music with today's electronic band's, then you will start to respect them.
💯💯✊🏾
Different times with different values
Kraftwerk representa a minha história , a minha vida ...
Well,I'm glad it was helpful. You're welcome,it's always good to find someone who states clearly his point of view, with such a good capacity to go straight to the core of the problem. And yes,the number of thumbs up is definitely reassuring, considering that we're on UA-cam ;)
I love them madly!!!!!!!
KRAFTWERK WILL ALWAYS BE THE PIONEERS OF ELICTRONIC MUSIC!!!
I had no idea Brienne of Tarth was a journalist.
lol
+George Evans The best reply ever
Sehr gut. Vielen Danke :-)
I’m so glad I actually saw them after years! I’m old enough enough to have seen them from the start but didn’t get around to it until around 2006-7 here in LA at the Greek Theater. A place I hate! But Kraftwerk were fantastic!
As a decades long follower of all sounds electronic.... Since the late 80's they've had much more influence on the techno genres of Electronica, Industrial, recently EDM and even Global Rhythm influenced multi-genre music.
So exciting every time
Kraftwerk. Those crazy guys... Ralf Nütter, Florian Schnitzel-Hasslebun, Karl Barking and Wolfgang Flöored. Funny guys!
No, really, I like Kraftwerk. ;)
XD 😆
Y E S !
Keeping the human element in the electronic music they make to this day - is the most dark thing to do.....and the most truthful.....
"... he is not only a robot - he 's a GERMAN robot." Hilarious. =D
Greetings from Germany ;-)
By the way: I am a woman and obviously I am not normal because I simply love KRAFTWERKs music.
My dad loves Kraftwerk!
Miranda Sawyer is the only robot in action here.
Graham Chandler 😅
I Love remixing their music I've been listening to kraftwerk since the 70s
Godfathers of Electro. This band was WAAAY ahead his time and underrated because they were too progressive!!
Kraftwerk is freaking awesome they have had many innovations that were not even thought about. I really think these guys were aiming to progress music but not the type of music of today. I think they were going for a more progressive electronic sound that could quite possibly be mainstream music In the future which would be fantastic!
That last sentence was very inspiring (:
Mucho gusto!! Fumar faso
Kraftwerk are like my Grandpa’s of electronic music
I like the band !
- Somehow "Kraftwerk's" Music and "Trans Europe Express" for example gives me impressions of "Bauhaus" and "Constructivism". One of the most influential Bands ever, I agree, as said in this video.
He's not just a robot, he's a German robot.
I love how my favorite bands are actually robots; Kraftwerk and Daft Punk
hehehe I love how the Ralf bot still has no legs x]
Ja, it's simple. Thanks to you and wingokraftwerk ,
The song at the end is "Numbers"
Is there some young people that want to make a band similar to kraftwerk?
Thank you for your kind words, plus without your comment and my notification via mail I would'nt have found out about the many thumbs up my remarks recieved here, which is somewhat reassuring.
You also hear their influence in Rammstein.
The best hit ever in the world electronics miuzic ! 1 milion like!
+What's the last piece of music that really inspired you?
-I'm always inspired by total silence....................and noice.
einfach nur Geil
I love Kraftwerk.
🤖🎹🔢
It's the German pimpin of technology....would you expect anything less!!!!! KEEP DA FUNK ALIVE!!!!!! KLING KLANG MUSIK NON STOP!!!!!
Nope, Evert Taube - Kinesiska Muren, was the first ever hip hop recorded.
This and Dave Mustains interview with a Japanese puppet are cool.
'Planet Rock' is not the first ever hip hop record.
Thought he'd say 'this interview ends now'. xD
best band in the world im hunting for every album from autobahn, radioactivity, Trans - Europe - Express, the man.machine ( best album ever ) computer world and tour de France
greatest ever
Mucho gusto mucho gusto
I invented Robot on 1970 year, seeing Mazingajet, Atom animation.
This time was 10 age
mucho gusto
i am wondering when Ralf have sex, does he go personally or does he sent his robot?
+the pAp And would the lady notice if he did?
I bet he goes "Man machine, machine machine, machine machine, machiiiinnneeeeeeeee"
Yes. He does. And it's really annoying.
Uhh...I've heard...
He can't do this, we have to make the Soundcheck :)
@@Gyrbae I'm sure right after this "She's a model and she's looking good
I'd like to take her home, that's understood
She plays hard to get, she smiles from time to time
It only takes a camera to change her mind"....
Still better music than Calvin Harris
Who the fuck is 'Calvin Harris'?
I've never heard of her either!
That's my physical education teacher's name, what the hell?
It's funny that Kraftwerk are the true godfathers of all music electronic. None of these DJs of today actually do anything live, except try to look like they're doing something; And all while their pre-produced .wav file plays on a laptop over the venue loudspeakers. They're no robots; THESE are the robots!
So does Kraftwerk lmao
Daft Punk, these are your gods.
@twingokraftwerk
Being a native English speaker, I think that you are right. They were starting from a clean sheet of paper.
he's not only a robot... he's a GERMAN robot XD
@gmilf71 Generally, he says KraftwerkI never heard him say "Craftwork"
Although I'm not very good at English, for me it is relatively easy to catch what Hütter says.
@tn800 Hi there, I guess, with "Zero-Situation" he refers to something, he said in an interview with Rock & Folk Magazine back in 1976: "The living culture of Central Europe was cut in the '30s, and all the intellectuals went to the U.S. or to France, or they were eliminated. We take back that culture of the '30s at the point where it was left, and this on a spiritual level..."
I am searching videos from KFT and i found your website, even i tried to use soulseek for your fault!! i want to see the 73 performance, i cant find it anywhere!
His answers are very Zen
I think Ralf actually _became_ a Buddhist in the 60s :)
THE ROBOTS ARE CUTE
Yeah, in German, as you may know, it'd be nearer "Krafft-vairk" (as in "air") but I don't think the band would ever expect Brits to pronunce it like that. The Germans pronounce Jaguar (as in the cars) "Yag-yoo-ar".
one Two
Miranda Sawyer is pretty good at breaking it all down and sorting things, and she's been behind many scenes for over twenty years, excellent journalism, she doesn't need to brag about it is all. Believe it or not not everyone wants to be Piers Morgan.
Strange but interesting interview
@tudgefunnel there were a bit more people who contributed to progress of modern music. You heard about Concrete Music movement? They were using oscillators and samples in 50s as well. But wait, electric guitar wasn't first electric instrument too, before that existed already few electric instruments. One good example is Theremin invented in 20s in USSR.
same here. these guys ruined my life since i was 3. :'D
now i'm totally obsessed with robots.^^ well done, kraftwerk!! xD
Planet Rock was not the first hip hop record ,the first hip-hop record was Rappers Delight by the Sugar Hill Gang
Many grand statements.
Is Kraftwerk (werk = Verk) no Kraft"work"..W in Deutsche is V
werk and work have the same roots...
Planet Rock did not 'sample' Trans Europe Express - it was played on keyboard maybe by Arthur Baker?.
Love Bill Bailey's tribute
Found this interesting with one minor flaw. Gary numan wasnt influenced by kraftwerk. He said himself he was more influenced by uktravox with Jon Foxx and others if the post punk era.
They look more like Fatwerk now. Sheer awesomeness from the early days of the music revolution (no not that 60's hippie crap, the real one from the 70's/80's techno/punk/new wave movement). The influences from those days are still all over the radio right now.
