I work just up the road from WD models, chesterfield. I've been there for just shy of a year now and I had no idea it existed till I stumbled upon your video by chance.. I want to thank you both for making me aware of this model shop! I'm planning to make a visit on the soonest Wednesday I can!
I found your video while doing some research into the history of railways in chesterfield. Turns out just up the road from the model shop, past the roundabout along west bars, you come to a weather spoons, originally the Portland Hotel.. It was once a railway hotel, with the old station called Chesterfield Market place right next door ( where the road and post office building now exist) Was built by the Lancashire, Derbyshire and Great Northern Railway.. Didn't last too long as far as railways go but I highly recommend doing some reading cause again.. no clue it existed XD
Again thank you both for the content you make, I really have enjoyed how genuine and down to earth you both are with regards to this wonderful hobby! Please do keep it up for as long as you both would like to ^^

Hi thanks for taking the time to comment. It's always interesting to discover information about the old railways in an area. I'm a bit of a history buff so I can lose hours just reading and researching things such as you mentioned. I will take a look, enjoy your visit to the shop I am sure you will not be disappointed. All the best Rick

Great to see more from these shops. I do hear plenty of folks talk about their locals, but the big names do get overly discussed. I, as stated, have no locals, but any time I go to a shop, even just to look around, I always buy something meaningful as a way to say thank you!

Hi Anthony, it's as much about supporting the high street as anything. So many of our town centres are deserted and are even being repurposed with shops being turned into offices or housing. Many of the model shops are located away from town centres with free parking and lower business rent. Thanks for watching Rick

    Hello again Rick and Pauline,
Another great video from you both, glad to hear that your going to be doing a couple more model railway shop visits soon.
And thanks for sharing the bonus footage too, especially at my local model shop WD MODELS, i really enjoyed that part.
I've spoken to the team in the shop recently and they all said that your lovely couple and are doing a grand job at promoting local model railway shops around the country and told me that it was a pleasure to meet you both.
So that's good feedback for you both then 😊
Anyway keep up the good work.

      Your welcome.
And I've spoken to Paul (the chap who does the model railway layout advice) a few times myself and he's helped me a lot with ideas and help for my layout which I am still building.
You never know which ever day you both decide to pop in again, we may bump into eachother?
Now that would be nice 😊
Anyway as usual thanks again for the reply back, keep up the good work.

great video. Yes it sure is nice to have a local model shop. But another reason to why the shops are closing is that the landlords today want the shops to pay much more than this business used to. The landlords very often are owned by pensionfunds and banks who want their dividend. This is why you will find only the big name stores in the cities. But as long as the shops are around we should support them.

Hi Henrik, that's very true and something which is a big problem where we are. Funnily enough both of the shops featured are not in the town centres. This is also true of Arcadia models and the next two shop videos we are to film. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hi, great video about reality, what make me laugh is when sellers on eBay claim the item is new when it clearly isn’t, I wish there were more model shops down south, Church Street models in Basingstoke is a superb shop run by a guy with in-depth knowledge of model railways and real railways, one of the best examples of a great retailer in my opinion and this shop is more than 50 miles away from where I live, Cheltenham model Centre is also a great store, I remember going there about 30 plus years ago for the first time, it totally blew me away because it had everything I wanted at the time including a full length Hornby APT set on display which was an amazing sight to see, there was also older triangle models in huge display cases and Scalextric cars galore as far as the eye could see including the very vintage models as well, it made shops like Boswells, Whyeths, Staton Kings and Howes model shop look very ordinary to me, I still shop at Cheltenham to this day as my local shops don’t float my boat unfortunately, I will hopefully venture up north this summer to checkout your great model railway shops, thanks for sharing.

I think you should try to get to Marcway models in Sheffield. It has it's own track design and doesn't feature much elsewhere. Another Sheffield shop is Sheffield Transport Models, both tend to get forgotten compared to Rails of Sheffield.
A great selling point for shops is paint and the plastic, metal and wood parts you can't get your head around the sizes on the internet. Paint costs more for postage than the product itself.

I agree with your comments in this video. However, here in Cornwall, model shops are rarer than hens teeth, so I use the larger online retailers because I trust the seller, the delivery is quick, etc. When comparing the service, they give to a 2 hour drive, hunting for a parking space, avoiding the holiday traffic swarming into Cornwall buying online is just easier. I'm sorry I am now part of the death of model shops. PS. my 31-year retail career was also ended by the rapid growth of Internet sales.

I think we all like these nostalgic shops, and the stock they have must be a fortune.
You can spend a few thousands of pounds and hardly anything has moved on the shelfs.
And as everyone knows, sitting stock is a finial lost, as it takes space, it's hard to bring in new stuff, as the old one still sitting there, the producers making more expensive stuff, there is the building itself, heating, your work hours, paper work, make a living off it, take all that in account, you must be a real idealist to make a living of that.
And you could say, well dump the old stock at bargain prises, this you can't do either, because then you actually are putting money of your own in to it.
And than a costumer comes in and ask for something you don't have in stock, you must have steel nerves not to straggle him😅
Not to forget the big competition, take Hattons for instance (take that example as it doesn't exist anymore), they had the financial power, the huge stock, to offer things, a lot of the small shops can't offer.
It's what I call the supermarket/shopping center effect, when they appeared at the beginning of the 20th century, it was the beginning of the end of the high street shops.
As a matter of fact that's the reason why city centers are so dead now.
Because everybody prefers and goes to the place that is convenient in all aspects, parking space, time spend and spend as less money as we can for the same quality goods.
Take all this in consideration, you only can express a deep respect for the shopkeepers.
So you only applause getting two train collectors in who film you enterprise, ad show the atmosphere is, as a lot of us have forgotten.
So please go to these shops and spend something, the only way we can still enjoy this experience.
    Cheers,
    Danny
