  • What does it take to race 1,100 miles in one day? Kyle Larson recently announced his plans to compete in both IndyCar’s Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 in 2024 (for Arrow McLaren and Hendrick Motorsports respectively), so I wanted to answer that question. Of the 4 drivers who have attempted the feat (Tony Stewart, John Andretti, Robby Gordon, and Kurt Busch), Tony Stewart’s 2001 attempt still holds the record for best finish. In this video, we explore all of the physical and mental challenges of driving a race car in both of these historic races, and what Kyle Larson will be up against if he wants to best Stewart’s finishes.

Shoot, I've done nearly 1,300 at one time! OK, it took more than one full day to do it (roughly 30 hours) but we were stuck in a miles-long traffic jam on I-95 in South Carolina in a downpour due to an overturned semi. And I never could sleep in a car. By the time we got moving again, around midnight, , it was too late to find a hotel for the night. We pulled off at a rest stop for a while but again I couldn't sleep, and now the sun was coming up. We decided to just push on until one or the other of us decided that I was too tired to drive safely. So . . . We left home just west of Philadelphia at about 7 am on Friday and pulled in to the AirBNB where we were staying, about 20 miles from Sarasota at about 1 pm on Saturday. We unloaded the car and I thought it was nap time. I slept until dinner about 7 pm and went back to bed, where I slept for another 12 hours!
