Probably should have mentioned my criteria for which series got included in the video: 4-wheeled racing series with the most global viewership/popularity. Needed to keep the video from becoming hours long, so forgive me if I didn't specifically mention your favorite series, but definitely leave a comment to let everyone know about it!

Hemingway allegedly once said “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games”. Today there is only one motor sport that still fits that distinction: Isle of Man TT.
It is the only sports event that still has the danger and daredevil aspect of Grand Prix racing from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. 266 racers have been killed in the race during its 85 years. The only year without a fatality was 1982. In 2005, 11 drivers died, in the last race 2022 6 drivers and passengers (in the side car class) died.
Since 2000 F1 has had one racing death, NASCAR Cup series has 1 (DE in 2001), WRC has had two (a driver and separately a co-driver). In those series more drivers die in testing and practice than racing. Safety is an excellent thing, but reduced risk does remove some of romance and thrill. I do not want more drivers to die, but I do miss the gladiator aspect of old school racing.

Please give Rallycross a go if anyone in the comments sections haven't watched it. The races are short quick-fire rounds so there's no worry about spending hours to watch a race(well if you follow it live then the whole weekend is kinda long but feel free to skip the waiting and do something else in between rounds right?), the racing is always close packed with actions, and there's strategic mind games when it comes to joker laps. The FIA sanctioned championships are a bit awkwardly organized in recent years but the sport itself is worth a watch. and Nitro Rallycross is fully FREE on youtube(except US, as the broadcast rights are sold to tv networks)

I went to a Red Bull Global Rallycross event (I think it's since been changed to the TitansRX series now) and it was hands down the most exciting racing I've seen live. I'm hoping Nitro can keep building momentum here in the U.S., as it always seems like sponsorship has been a big issue for previous RX series as the years go by. Thanks for watching!

    • @DavidGossettMusic
      @DavidGossettMusic Рік тому +10

Agreed, as a long time fan of rallycross, it's by far my favorite format. The crazy, ridiculous car behavior of rallying, mixed with traditional circuit racing makes RX a really entertaining product. Unfortunately, later seasons of GRC and WRX fell into utter VW dominance, but Nitro RX's spec FC1X has made for a really competitive series.

      @edugj23 Рік тому +7

Clearly the most underrated motorsport IMO. Doesn't help when World RX had a massive step backwards in terms of coverage amidst the organizational and power transition (it's easier to blame going electric, but there are so many issues lying underneath with the process). I hope one day we'll see it progress from an European sport to a more global presence.

As a German who grew up watching it a lot, I would consider diversifying the category of 'Road Racing' a bit more. You could put the Supercars Championship and BTCC into the touring car bracket, IMSA and WEC are sportscar racing series and championships like the Mazda MX-5 cup qualify as one make series. Then there are the several balance of performance controlled GT racing series like the GT World Challenge for instance. This 'supercategory' of road racing is definitely the most diversified of them all so it deserves a deeper dive in my opinion. Other than that you pretty much nailed it.

Coming from Finland, F1 and rally are of course the two of my favorite forms of motorsport. Here most of the media coverage is centered around those two thanks to the success of Finnish drivers in both disciplines. And with rally it definitely helps that we have tons of silent gravel roads where young people can drive their cars (sometimes even over the speed limit) and hone their skills, which makes the sport quite accessible even if you're not wealthy.

    • @themotorsportstory

I remember watching the Grand Tour episode where they talk about Finland having the most car accidents out of any nation, despite having one of the most strict driving tests in the world. As an American who watches and searches for endless motorsports, my defense for the Finnish is I don't believe a lot of those car accidents were neccesarily... accidents. Like sure, they don't mean to crash but they certainly mean to release their inner-Marcus Gronholm and bolt through the Finnish backroads in their Peugeots and Volvos, going 130kph before ending upside down in a ditch. Those stats are skewed. Lol

    • @Rakettivuori
      @Rakettivuori Рік тому +1

@@lorddrac_dontaskmetodance I can see myself in this. Despite not having any big accidents (once clipped a sidewalk that bounced me into a ditch at a slow speed during winter) I know that many do drive over the speed limit, especially on roads they know. Someone I know had a crash at the road her grandmother lived because she knew the road and always drove way over the limit, until a car appeared behind a crest and she had to take avoiding action. I know for certain I drive way too fast on roads leading to my own grandparents in the countryside because I know the roads quite well, and even then my dad is even faster. But then again, I also know I'm in a different situation to most, where my parents have been heavily involved with the local motorsports club for decades and those roads I said go to my grandparents have been used in the Finnish Rally Championship years ago

Thanks to being a Ferrari fan, though, I’ve recently rejoined the Indycar fanbase and I honestly look forward to watching Indycar races more than the F1 races on most weekends. Additionally, Indycar is insanely more accessible than F1 as far as attending races. I completely agree. I grew up in North Carolina, the NASCAR hotbed, but I seriously enjoy IMSA much more this year (and always have liked it). Imo NASCAR has too many kinks and quirks that turn off new fans and veterans alike, but with IMSA it feels like a gladiator match between teams and manufacturers. It feels more organic than the chopped up NASCAR races we have now. It's also easier to defend against haters than the "left turn" sport.

Every day I love sportscar racing more and more (WEC, IMSA, BTCC, V8 Supercars, SuperGT, you name it) and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite types of racing if not my favorite. an interesting motorsport thats still around is Trials.
This was essentially the origins of rally special stages, which combined with the long road rallies of the time with long routes and co-drivers/navigators to make modern rally series. Essentially trials is a sport where you either win or lose, there is no ranking, and you win by simply making it to your destination.
    Normal cars
    2 wheel drive
    normal road tyres
all on some of the most difficult offroad terrain imaginable without needing special suspension and massive wheels.
Trials is still very popular in motorcycle racing, where the rules are "dont put your feet down" while the rider clambers over ridiculous boulders and hopping from fallen trees, but car trials are still held in britain as they have done for over 100 years. its very entertaining to see the likes of the suzuki X90 and mk3 toyota mr2 "racing" with modified cars from the 1920s that are still going, all with cars like the classic beetle and triumph TR7 running with them.

My perspective as a life long NASCAR fan usually saw people who watch F1 and WRC do this a little more, but I am aware that this can apply to anybody from any fanbase - that point you mentioned about "being conditioned to a certain style of racing" outlines that well to add to that. That's at least where I think a big source of division comes from.

One guy ended up uninjured pulling his car out of a lake, another's Ford Focus had a good 2.6m drop of the side of the road, rolled about 6 times. EVERYBODY cheered. Best thing we had seen all day. Sweden. F1 and previously WRC.
I grew up next to the Swedish Rally stage, so that's where I got my taste for motorsports. Later on I grew to love F1 due to the televised spectacle and the on-track action (and the end of Group B). Honestly, it's not that other motorsports are bad, it's just that there's something inherently visceral about watching drivers pass each other at 340kmh in cars worth more than most people earn in their entire lifetimes. Watching triple my yearly salary spread out over the track from just a front wing getting damaged isn't a negative for me, it adds flavor. Watching more money than I will make during my whole career go up in smoke when Charles LeClerc touches a gas pedal is just pure fun.
I'm weird, but hey, I love the sport for all the other reasons as well.

I'm from the Czech Republic and my favorites are F1 and rallying. I also try to follow WEC a bit, and rallycross (though even less than WEC). As for the American based racing series (as well as most others), I never really felt the connection to them, since I didn't have any means of watching them in the past or even following them (before I had Internet, as these series simply aren't covered at all in my country).
I watched F1 since the mid 2000s when I was a kid, it was always sort of a dream for me (I wanted to race in F1), it went away when the standard channels stopped covering it and I no longer had a way of watching it, so I fell out for a bunch of years, though at the start of the pandemic, I started following it again. Hopefuly one day, I get to go to at least one race.
As for rallying, our country is a bit of a rallying nation, and not far from me, the traditional Barum Czech Rally Zlín is held every year, as part of the European Rally Championship (and formerly part of Intercontinental Rally Challenge), so my parents were taking me there every year for a part of my childhood, as well as to other local rallies. Same as with F1, I started having other interests, so we weren't going anymore for a bunch of years, but same as with F1, the pandemic made me find rallying again, and I absolutely fell in love. I started playing a bunch of racing games again and in 2021, got myself a wheel and started sim racing. The next year, I started collecting scale models of rally cars too! I went to Barum Rally in 2021 and 2022 and I'm going again this year! Apart from that, I recently went to an amateur rally and to another round of our national championship, and will be going to one more next month. And of course, the big one in October, finally, for the first time, WRC will visit my country and I obviously won't miss seeing those Rally1 cars and all my favorite drivers with my own eyes!

I just wish the series had more fans to inspire more races and discourse-if you’re a motorsports fan, watch Indycar in May/June. You likely won’t be disappointed. As far as other series, The summation of F1 was pretty good, but the part I feel was left out is the dramatic aspect of manufacturer vs. manufacturer, country vs. country, team vs. team, and driver vs. driver. From an American’s POV, it just FEELS European-not a bad thing, but foreign and full of elitist sentiment. NASCAR hasn’t been the same in a while… less marketable drivers, weird schedule, cars aren’t even stock, bad rule changes, stages, and a joke of a points system. Road racing (IMSA fan) is fantastic, but could use more exposure even in the world of motorsports. As for rally… maybe I’ll give it a try.

Italy here. WRC used to be super exciting, especially Group B, Group A, and 1999 to 2006. The best eras. And we had great champions (Gigi Galli, Biasion anyone??)and races here in Italy, but now it's really a poor series, sadly, mainly for budget reasons, nobody can afford some Rally1 cars (so the regulation does not allow them in tha main championship), so now we have rallies full of... well, the monster Fabia r5
ally2. Quite boring honestly. At least we have Rally Legend which is a MONSTROUS exciting rally event. Then , I really love GT3, but we miss manifacturer here, compared to some yars ago ( with Nissan GTR, Bentley, etcetera). But, the best motorsport to see in Italy now, to me, it's TIME ATTACK and trackdays (follow Davide Cironi). Pure passion, lot of incredible tuning, and most of all a really genuine atmosphere, both in the racetrack, tha paddocks, and in the spectator park, where you can look to great cars, talk friendly to people, and eat great food in some occasions.
To me. my country has some sparks ( alfa Giulia, Abarth 500 ( NOT ELECTRIC), and Ferrari of course), but has lost its soul in the istant classics small cars like Uno Turbo, Coupè 20 valves Turbo, Punto Abarth, Punto GT generation, Alfa 147 GTA, LANCIA DELTA EVO, and so on....

Local dirt racing is probably my favorite type. Sprint cars, dirt late models, dirt modified, midgets, super modified everything. It’s really accessible to both watch and participate in. Consistently great racing in your hometown (if you live in the US.) there’s truly innovative engineering, absolutely ludicrous hp to weight ratios. F1 level hp to weight ratios, with straight up goofy levels of down and sideforce. There’s some next level skill, cars are hard to control, dirt makes them harder to control, the track can change throughout the race as drivers create grooves, and to top it all off there can be plenty of lead changes. And some of these cars are so cheap that it’s not out of the picture for you and your buds to just start racing.

What's sad about a lot of these series is they can be really hard to watch in North America. It's improving with the whole "Post the race on UA-cam a week later" thing but before the last couple of years? Your main, options usually were:
    1. Pay a bunch extra for a big package of TV channels, only to care about 2 of them. If you have TV at all.
    2. Pay for an expensive subscription service to watch a season, only to find out the service is dreadful in some way, on top of the fact that you probably have to spend more on another big subscription, to watch a second series.
    3. Highlights. A quick summary for those who missed half a race? Fine, I guess. But when you have hours of content you could've watched and got a 2 and a half minute recap, it gets painful after a while.
Again, glad things are picking up, but for a long while it got pretty terrible... RIP Speed Channel.

As a NASCAR fan who grew up watching in the Gen 4 era, a lot of NASCAR fans hate stage racing and never really liked the playoff format. The points system from 2004 - 2013 was really good, the original points system was generic but the biggest issue happened in 2003 when Ryan Newman won 8 races yet lost the championship to Matt Kenseth who only won 1 race, but was more consistent, and fans at the time didn't like it. I do feel with the pre 2004 points system, wins weren't valued enough. Other than those two things, NASCAR is awesome, to get the full experience you definitely need to go to a race, to experience the power of these cars. Finally, I may be biased, but the Gen 4 NASCAR was the greatest imo, they looked fast, were fast, and sounded amazing, the combo of X-pipes and Boom Tubes is just amazing

nascar, f1, & indycar are the ones i watch the most & give the most attention to. that being said, i've begun to pay attention to aussie supercars & wec a hell of a lot more. imsa is in a category of its own between those parties.
when it comes to the best racing, it's incredibly difficult to compare. nascar, indy, imsa, wec, supercars, all have decent (on avg.) on-track products at the least. f1 lags behind but makes up for it in spectacle & technicality, although it has produced some incredible races in the 10 seasons i've watched dating back to 2014.
*i do want to preface this by saying i believe f1 is a racing series first & that the engineering and drama play supporting roles, albeit strong ones
motorsport is something that i devote myself towards, as a us citizen i don't pay attention to stick-and-ball on a weekly basis other than the nfl but even then racing takes priority. it's just the passion i have for it. it's my life and one day i want to participate in these events as a driver, i don't know where i'd be today without the sport.

I'm simply a motorsports enthusiast. So I watch a bit of everything you've mentioned in this video (except maybe BTCC, because I never think to look for it). However, one form of racing that I think you overlooked is professional drag racing.
Although it only gets about 1/4 of the viewership as NASCAR does, NHRA Drag Racing has a long, storied history, and easily the quickest, fastest land vehicles on the planet. The races are much, much shorter (literally just 1000ft, or 1/4 mile, depending on the class), but the top professional classes feature vehicles that make over 11,000 HP EACH, and can reach nearly 340 mph in just 1000 feet of asphalt. Even the Pro Stock class features 2,000 HP cars that can take 1/4 mile in less than 6.5 seconds.
Professional drag racing is the motorsport that started my love for fast, loud, and competitive. My earliest memory is of me being 3 years old at a drag strip. I know this video was meant to highlight the "major" racing series', but American drag racing pulls the same viewer numbers as IMSA, and there are drag racing associations in other countries like the UK and Australia too.

I feel like one of the detractors from NASCAR in the past 20 years has been the manufactured drama. I used to love watching it as a kid, but there is no denying that there is an inherent lack of purity in the racing. It seems that there is often a push to have "Game 7" moments in every race to try to cater to casual fans and draw stick and ball sports fans in. Overtime, the Playoffs, Stage racing, etc... have done more to push fans away rather than draw new die hard fans.
Indycar definitely puts on a tremendous event with a lot of organic excitement and is easily my favorite form of racing, but that doesn't mean it is without its flaws. There needs to be 20-22 races on the calendar to keep fan engagement up. There also needs to be a bigger push for more ovals, which is a goal of the series, however, it always seems to be tough to draw fans to attend ovals outside of the Indy 500. Another limiting factor is the fact that there is little return on investment for manufactures, shown by the fact that only Honda and Chevy are involved. This, plus the cost associated has made it difficult for car counts to grow over 24 entries until the past couple years.
Sportscars, particularly IMSA, are in my opinion the best form of professional motorsport in North America. There is no denying that you get incredibly close racing that is organic and pure, as well as a diverse variety of cars, engines, drivers, etc... It is also the most fan friendly as far as allowing fan engagement in the garage area. If I was to take someone to a race for the first time, I would make it a point to show them IMSA.

I’m a fan of engineering, but I’m mostly interested in what engineering can do to make the vehicle better for the driver. Since the late 80s, a great deal of the allowable engineering has been to augment or improve the drivers inputs, which opened new areas of development since the limitations of the driver were no longer binding. The decision to allow a wide array of driver aids, and the inability of regulators to control these systems has led to a sharp decline in viewership and participation. Motorcycle racing is one of the last bastions of motorsport but it’s unclear how much longer it will hold on.
The racing series that solves the driver aids problem without turning to NASCAR spec rules will have my respect.

    • @themotorsportstory
      @themotorsportstory  Рік тому

I'd never really thought about it like that, but you have a good point in terms of the driver aids. I think that a small amount of them can be useful given just how fast some of todays cars are, but they can certainly be overdone. It's interesting how even in video games, less experienced players will often choose to drive faster, more advanced cars for exactly that reason; they're easier to drive.

When F1 is close, it's incredibly entertaining. Unfortunately, as you stated, frequently it is not close (2014-2020, 2022, and so far this season), especially in the recent past. Effectively one team gets it "right" and it's more about which driver on that team will win, or if they'll run into mechanical issues or bad enough luck that we get something else.
NASCAR has always been about the show first and foremost. It's both what makes it entertaining to watch sometimes, and frustrating as the various points systems, etc. tend to knock out the better drivers - but at that point, it keeps more drivers (and thus their fans) in the hunt.
IndyCar to me honestly is among the most interesting, as with the spec chassis there's a solid baseline, and there is some engineering done on the suspension, as well as different engines (Chevy or Honda, but still different). This provides some level of the engineering mattering, and with the open-use "push to pass" button, with a limit on how much you can use it per-race, you have to decide if you're going to use it to defend, save it for late in the race, use it to actually pass, or even just use it to run ridiculously fast laps to open or close a gap. It's a lot more interesting than DRS which is basically "Are you within 1 second of the next car? K, you probably get to pass them in this next section then".
I personally find WEC the most interesting...if I had the time to devote to actually watching it. I really enjoy the whole "do you go easy on the brakes and sack a second per lap so that you only have to change the brakes and rotors out twice during the 12 hours rather than 3 times" sort of discussions that teams have, it's like playing 3-d chess to F1's chess to NASCAR's checkers.

Also I like stages but I don’t think they should stop the race, just let the drivers get their points but let them keep on racing.
Edit: To add on to some of my favorite racing series, you missed out on all the local styles of racing here in the US. Since I live near a dirt track, I absolutely love seeing dirt late models flying around a bullring and I think it is really exciting.

Great video, personally my favorite is F1, but I also enjoy WEC and Indy Car a lot. Gotta be honest, the reason why I started watching F1 is to watch Checo Pérez (I´m mexican) and started really following when the Mexico GP returned and Indy Car I mostly Follow Pato O´Ward. Le Mans I don´t know, I like Le Mans a lot and this year's Hypercars are INSANE

My problem is they keep changing the streaming channel on all sports. I was just getting back into Indy and they changed to a streaming channel I dodn't have. So I don't watch it anymore.
Another point is I am invested in some sports through having a great general knowledge of their drivers, teams, and history. I don't watch some (even when they have great racing) simply because I don't care about any of the teams or drivers.

Those are both really good points. Network agreements can really ruin the reach of some series. And to your other point, it's certainly easier to get invested in a racing series when you follow/care about the outcomes for a specific team or driver. Thanks for watching!

Stadium super trucks is fun if you're looking for a bit of action. Rally cross would be my pick to watch in person, highly recommended. WRC, ARA or any other staged rallies will always have my heart though.

I became a NASCAR fan thanks to my father, he passed when I was little so as teenager I wanted to watch something to get a perspective into what he would've liked, and I enjoyed it for a few years, but eventually I became an F1 fan. Mostly because of the better broadcasting and shorter race times, to be honest. If NASCAR had a normal points system I feel like I'd be much more invested. It's so gimmicky.

Drag racing is cool too, just doesn't have the global popularity of the other series in the video which is why I didn't mention it. I'm personally not too well versed in it but I think it's one of those sports that's a lot easier to appreciate live. Watching an NHRA team completely rebuild an engine in a matter of minutes is nuts!

SuperGT went unmentioned and I HIGHLY recommend it. As someone who struggles sitting down and watching a full race, SuperGT is exciting enough I feel like it's shorter than I want it to be
Its got both touring card and sports cars. Its also really competitive and has a lot of on-track action, and memorable drivers and vehicles. Plus its easy to watch, its just on UA-cam on one channel, for free. While some other series are hard to actually find broadcasts for.

"Push To Pass" for Indycar is litterally like f1 Ers and Drs. Ers is a battery which makes the car go faster. Drs is when the spoiler opens and make the aur go through and makes the car go faster. So if you put Ers and Drs you can go more than 200Mph in f1.

I really think the moto GP should be mentioned. By definition it is a racing series. And having bikes instead of cars is great. Action packed 45 minute races on the best tracks in the world. Also, the developing series moto 2 and moto 3 are as entertaining and enjoyable as the main product, so there are 3 races every raceweek for you to watch

    World Rallycross

    Extreme E

    RallyX Nordic
    Le Mans

I'm from Türkiye and I'm mostly into F1. These days F1 lacks the natures of old drivers, their charisma and also lack of competitive brands. If F1 is over for that weekend, I put my time into WRC. Still can't follow the calendar for rally races but playing a lot Dirt series and WRC games for learning the system of rally. And I can say, it's pretty fun and thrilling, even in games. You're right, rally is the most difficult motorsport. Can't even imagine the danger the pilot and co-pilot going through at those stages. After these 2 motorsport, I'm trying to take a look for GT series too!

I mainly watch NASCAR, IndyCar, F1, and Formula E, and I watched the first 2.5 seasons of the Superstar Racing Experience. I've been trying to get into rally, but, we are really cut off from the rally world. I tried to get into rallycross back when Global RallyCross was going (plus, living in Seattle, I just missed their event at DirtFish, and couldn't afford tickets to their two events at Evergreen Speedway), but, again, I've been unable to because of an inability to find rallycross series to watch.

I personally try to enjoy any kind of Motorsport discipline, it’s just more fun that way. Instead of having to wait the 2-3 week breaks that f1 or indycar tends to have with no racing I can go watch a weekly series like nascar or dirt sprint racing and enjoy it just as much. Events like the Rolex 24 or 24 hours of Le Mans have become yearly events that I watch. There’s only one discipline that I can’t stand and it’s drag racing as to me when I watch it it’s only people driving in a straight line but despite that I still understand and respect the work that the drivers have to put into it
