Neil, I used to have a science teacher that used to say pointed out that everything is science. By pointing that out, I started looking at the world differently and trying to find the scientific reason behind everything that I saw. Thanks to things like Google and the Internet, science has been categorized to make it easier to find the scientific papers behind my questions. I still have more questions, but I try to find the science behind them all.
If neil degrasse tyson was my science physics or astronomy teacher i would take that class as many times as possible and even be willing to do his extra credit. he just makes everything so interesting and easy to follow

Neil! I have been contemplating the cosmos alone at home for several months. We are almost three years into this pandemic and I’m still in my head trying to understand myself and the universe. I have been working on a theory about SpaceTime and what Time actually is and how it relates to Blackholes and the 4th special dimension. Everything you have said resonates with me and what I’ve been thinking about for a long time. I’m allowing my creativity to flow and expand. I’m motivated by this and am going to work on this and show you what my theory is as soon as I can. I’m so excited to continue to discover new things and contribute to the knowledge and understanding of the universe. I am eager to share so l hope you and whoever else will at least listen. Thank you for your inspiration.
I watch Star Talk almost every night while I fall asleep. It's so entertaining and educational, and fascinating. I laugh, giggle and go hmmmph 🤔 learning new things while my melatonin kicks in. You're so right. I've commented the same sentiment before; Chuck's knowledge and retention of facts that he learned in past episodes is really amazing. Very often, Neil will be talking about, or ask, something and Chuck knows far more than just the basics of many topics. It is truly impressive.
Guys, can I pose a question, please? Black holes are described as black because we have no idea what happens in there, so instead of everything going down to the size of a pea, would it not be plausible that it opens up to another subspace plain or dimension that we are unable to observe? So essentially space would be a huge sponge with holes opening up in random places. Obviously, As the observer, you can see the whole, but you can't observe the void on the other side of the sponge. I hope that makes sense? Matter, has to go somewhere and would also kind of explain the expansion spacetime. Love the show, Mr Tyson you are a legend!

Hello Chuck and Niel. I am a chronicle pain patient and live a lot longer in lock down then the virus is here. I live alone and besides my social aid I get barely other visits and my hip pain won't allow me to walk or sit much. The main thing to keep your mind healthy is to keep your mind and hands busy. For instance. I play games on console in the morning, in the afternoon I paint miniatures while laying down and in the evening I watch series / movies or play more games. To everyone ems who read this. Please chear this tip with others.

speaking of science advertising, i remember an argument with a flat earther. others tried to convince him with facts about science and i simply said "if the scientists who invented cars, planes, trains, phones, tv, radio, computers and the internet say the earth is round, why would i believe a random guy on the internet with not a single credential to his name who says the earth is flat?"

I love your show! I took an astronomy class years ago and I’ve had a question that I could never find an answer to. The text book said that hubble found that more distant galaxies have more redshift than closer galaxies. previously i learned that due to the doppler effect, a redshift means it is moving away, and a greater redshift means is is moving away faster. so if distance in lightyears is also looking back into the past, then hubble's law is pretty much stating that the galaxies were moving away from us faster than they are now. in other words, galaxies are slowing thier expansion instead of accelerating like ive heard recently. Please help!
cody I think its the opposite way round. The galaxies further away actually appear to be moving away faster not slower. The issue is identifying what force is making them accelerate when they should be slowing down. This is that whole 'dark' as in 'unknown' area that is always so popular in questions. I think I got that right - apologies if not :)
Geoff, I also heard the same. But since distance = time. Then the red shift that is witnessed is from an earlier point in history. That leads me to believe that the expansion is slowing, not accelerating.
@@codyx8273 I had a similar thought regarding time.......but here's another question that provides a wrinkle...WHERE are we observing from, relative to the original Big Bang? If we are 'farther along' in the progression, then it makes perfect sense that things farther away seem to be moving faster, since they still have more of the original impulse from the Big Bang.
I'm an artist, more specifically a sculptor, painter, I draw stuff, I also program video games, and I am novice animator. For the majority of this year I've been unemployed, so I've just been finishing off works that have been laying around and also starting some new projects. The most interesting thing about the universe is the more we know, the more we discover that we don't know much about it. Regarding the last question and answer, about science and politics/politicians, what needs to happen is we need people to realize that by default we are ALL scientists! From birth on, we learn our world and environment through our own individualized explorations of the world, be it how to use a fork, how to put blocks through holes, how to drive a car, cooking, etc... everything we learn to do, we learn through repetition, with the goal of perfecting and optimizing our abilities to execute each action. We can't do any of that without having a little scientist inside each of us. Unfortunately, religion, and now politics, have tried to teach some of us that we are not scientists and that we should not pay attention to science, which disregards the fact that we could not learn and grow without our own versions of the scientific process. And we don't stop using the scientific process as we get older... every single time you drive your car around that one bend in the road, you try to do it better than the last time, whether you realize it or not. It would be fair to say we are each subconsciously acting as scientists in our everyday lives. As a scientific community, if we can get people to understand that, they might learn to respect the sciences that much more.
Tez from England and my Star Talk question is if dark matter is still unknown and has been for past 90ish years. What have we found out about it since discovery till now?
We found out quite a bit actually, like Dr Tyson says DM is actually dark gravity, it tends to drive the universe together, we can measure it but we can't see nor contain it since it doesn't interact with the electromagnetic forces nor with regular matter, in other words, it's invisible and can pass right through regular matter. Hopefully Dr Tyson will give you more insight on the subject.
46:20 - Distractions are useful for creativity, they can spur ideas, and make you think about things deeper, the problem isn't so much distractions, it's not letting your thoughts think about something deeply. And so you learn about science, you get the fundamentals down, you watch a TV show on a worm hole, and you sit down and you wonder, can I make that happen. Issac started everything because someone distracted him with a bet, he then went in to try understand that deeply, he didn't hold back on thinking about this. So in some ways it's a bit like you have to give yourself time to meditate, but you also have to explore ideas and think about how you can make them work. You have to give yourself time to think about the world deeper. Rather then just rushing from one thing to another.
so, I remember Neil talking about atoms having generations to them, 3 confirmed different generations of matter so far that have exactly the same properties minus one, their density. I would say 'No.' Not unless there were some process _beyond_ Hawking Radiation, through which particles were able to leave said black hole. For example: If black holes could explode in the way a white dwarf does when it goes supernova, then 'Yes.' Beyond that, however, I'd have to say no.

Question : You have two black holes that are separated. There is a laser strewn going perfectly between the black holes perfectly (mathematically saying) for a moment can or cannot light just stall just for a moment almost like “stationary light.” More than one black hole would be required and timing is a factor. Yeah, I love Tyson and would like to listen to him drop knowledge all day, but I think having the comic relief makes it more interesting and also brings it to a broader audience. I get what you are saying though, sometimes he goes a little too far, but I feel it's a nice yin and yang so to speak. :)

I love your show! I took an astronomy class years ago and I’ve had a question that I could never find an answer to. The text book said that hubble found that more distant galaxies have more redshift than closer galaxies. previously i learned that due to the doppler effect, a redshift means it is moving away, and a greater redshift means is is moving away faster. so if distance in lightyears is also looking back into the past, then hubble's law is pretty much stating that the galaxies were moving away from us faster than they are now. in other words, galaxies are slowing thier expansion instead of accelerating like ive heard recently. Please help!

cody I think its the opposite way round. The galaxies further away actually appear to be moving away faster not slower. The issue is identifying what force is making them accelerate when they should be slowing down. This is that whole 'dark' as in 'unknown' area that is always so popular in questions. I think I got that right - apologies if not :)
I think one of Anton Petrov´s yt videos was about that phenomenon.
Geoff, I also heard the same. But since distance = time. Then the red shift that is witnessed is from an earlier point in history. That leads me to believe that the expansion is slowing, not accelerating.
@@codyx8273 I had a similar thought regarding time.......but here's another question that provides a wrinkle...WHERE are we observing from, relative to the original Big Bang? If we are 'farther along' in the progression, then it makes perfect sense that things farther away seem to be moving faster, since they still have more of the original impulse from the Big Bang.
I'm an artist, more specifically a sculptor, painter, I draw stuff, I also program video games, and I am novice animator. For the majority of this year I've been unemployed, so I've just been finishing off works that have been laying around and also starting some new projects. The most interesting thing about the universe is the more we know, the more we discover that we don't know much about it. That doesn't frustate me but keeps me interested in finding out more and maybe one day we'll be able to understand everything about it. 🙂👍❤

When two galaxies collide, can two black holes merge? How would that happen? Does it get bigger?
The bigger galaxy absorbs the smaller one and they create in millions of years later a "new" galaxy, and yes it gets bigger because both masses merge that goes with black holes too

Regarding the last question and answer, about science and politics/politicians, what needs to happen is we need people to realize that by default we are ALL scientists! From birth on, we learn our world and environment through our own individualized explorations of the world, be it how to use a fork, how to put blocks through holes, how to drive a car, cooking, etc... everything we learn to do, we learn through repetition, with the goal of perfecting and optimizing our abilities to execute each action. We can't do any of that without having a little scientist inside each of us. Unfortunately, religion, and now politics, have tried to teach some of us that we are not scientists and that we should not pay attention to science, which disregards the fact that we could not learn and grow without our own versions of the scientific process. And we don't stop using the scientific process as we get older... every single time you drive your car around that one bend in the road, you try to do it better than the last time, whether you realize it or not. It would be fair to say we are each subconsciously acting as scientists in our everyday lives. As a scientific community, if we can get people to understand that, they might learn to respect the sciences that much more.
Tez from England and my Star Talk question is if dark matter is still unknown and has been for past 90ish years. What have we found out about it since discovery till now?

We found out quite a bit actually, like Dr Tyson says DM is actually dark gravity, it tends to drive the universe together, we can measure it but we can't see nor contain it since it doesn't interact with the electromagnetic forces nor with regular matter, in other words, it's invisible and can pass right through regular matter.
Hopefully Dr Tyson will give you more insight on the subject.

46:20 - Distractions are useful for creativity, they can spur ideas, and make you think about things deeper, the problem isn't so much distractions, it's not letting your thoughts think about something deeply. And so you learn about science, you get the fundamentals down, you watch a TV show on a worm hole, and you sit down and you wonder, can I make that happen. Issac started everything because someone distracted him with a bet, he then went in to try understand that deeply, he didn't hold back on thinking about this. So in some ways it's a bit like you have to give yourself time to meditate, but you also have to explore ideas and think about how you can make them work. You have to give yourself time to think about the world deeper. Rather then just rushing from one thing to another.
so, I remember Neil talking about atoms having generations to them, 3 confirmed different generations of matter so far that have exactly the same properties minus one, their density. Not unless there were some process _beyond_ Hawking Radiation, through which particles were able to leave said black hole. For example: If black holes could explode in the way a white dwarf does when it goes supernova, then 'Yes.' Beyond that, however, I'd have to say no.

Question : You have two black holes that are separated. There is a laser strewn going perfectly between the black holes perfectly (mathematically saying) for a moment can or cannot light just stall just for a moment almost like “stationary light.” More than one black hole would be required and timing is a factor.
