StarTalk Podcast: Cosmic Queries - Lunar Geology
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are answering fan-submitted Cosmic Queries about lunar geology alongside planetary scientist Raquel Nuno. And as Raquel says, she’s here to change your mind about the Moon!
As it turns out, we don’t know very much about the Moon. Raquel explains how the Moon has been a celestial witness to everything Earth has experienced. Learn about some surprising discoveries we’ve made from moon rocks and other samples. You’ll hear how our views on the Moon changed from it being a piece of primordial dust and rock to a place with an incredible geologic history. We also discuss why we currently can’t go back to the Moon.
Next, we explore the Moon’s craters and why Earth has far fewer craters. What would we find if we extracted a core sample from the Moon? Raquel tells us about finding Moon samples on astronaut space suits. Are there still bacteria alive on the Moon left from the Apollo missions? We explore where the ice on the Moon comes from, and Raquel gives us details on creating “water out of thin space.”
You’ll learn more about Theia and the “giant-impact” hypothesis. Explore the Moon’s magma ocean of the past. Uncover the “truth” about the dark side of the Moon. Ponder what would happen if the Moon broke apart. Lastly, we discuss the true color of the Moon, and, whether we can terraform the lunar surface. All that, plus, we ask, can a moon have a moon?
Thanks to our Patrons David Frederick, Jennifer Aiken, Jamie Boneleye, Kyle Walker, Evan Blackburn, Jon Mack, Wyatt Smith, Cole Smart for supporting us this week.

Chuck adds a splash of levity that makes this pod cast flow.
I should add Tyson gets some pretty hilarious chops in too though.
Moon dust magic 🌌🌌🌌🤗🤗🤗
How fortunate we are, to have all of these amazing StarTalk episodes already.
Indeed
I actually met Neil a long time ago at a grocery store near my old house an I went up to him an said I was a big fan an he said thanks then told me to always take the time to just look at the stars
Thats legit
That's it? He didn't say anything more? He would rebut with "I just wanted to plant the seed of knowledge" or something. I would say, however, it would be better if he engaged in a non-generic way, he's probably said the same thing to thousands of people.
@@roberthobbs6318 That's the point - thousands of people. He deserves his privacy as well. A random person does not have the right to demand anything extra from him. If the original poster was happy with Neil's response just let him be happy with it.
From what I remember that was all he said
I’m glad NDT has a quick verisimilitude ready for a random adoring fan encounter. Were I famous I would prepare a similar type of greeting.
Bring this incredible woman back ASAP as much as possible please
better yet, trade Chuck for her

@@jameskerry41 😂 my dude is a comedian ,gotta keep him .
Yo.....were keepin chuck!
Raquel was one of my favorite guest on the show thus far. This was a great episode!!!!!
She's so genuinely excited to be a geologist and I'm here for it
I totally felt that as well. To learn that icier bodies are farther out in our solar system with the rockier bodies closer to the Sun is something I will remember forever now :) It makes total sense in my newly learned basic chemistry knowledge as well, lighter stuff always ends up on the outer layers.
Edited to add:
As a computer scientist it's also fun to think of the Universe as being bubble sorted by gravity 😄
The moon is an artificial satellite brought here thousands of years ago by reptilian Draco's.

can't wait to have Raquel Nuno back on startalk, but this time as a moon doctor
That is an amazing term!

@@keithbstar1 But can't she just _save_ our current lives instead?!? 😹😹
Every day is a great day for StarTalk!
I’m a middle school science teacher, and I’ve been known to tell students over the years, that a mirror was left by astronauts in July 1969 that is used to measure the distance from Earth to the Moon, and I have learned some great “ new” information from this talk; thank you! Stephen.. Florida
It's amazing when the guests are so educative and eloquent, but also have the ability to apply the right amount of humor and entertainment to their answers. I think Raquel was a great example of that! Excellent episode altogether.
Very good show
@@duaanekobe2773: I concur whole-heartedly
I LOVE moons but I've fallen in love with Earth's moon again. Thank you.
Careful- she's an indifferent mistress and will never love you back...
I really enjoyed that. Raquel Nuno is very enthusiastic about her subject and is so beautiful.
King of simps
Isn’t that why they were kidding her in the beginning about getting into school? I might’ve missed read that too…
@@davidthompson7817Actually it was a joke about many people paying to get their kids into college. Even some celebs got in big trouble and did jail time over it so it made big news.
I would have never thought I would Learn so much about the moon.
Thank you Dr Raquel Nuno.
I am just so happy and satisfied with life when I get to watch StarTalk. Ahhhhh finally, something to entertain my brain. I get so weary watching disturbing junk. Thank YOU all!

Would definitely love to hear more geology from Raquel in the future on StarTalk.
This was so enjoyable!!! Science never looked more gorgeous!
I always slightly hesitate when watching these videos because I wonder if I’m really interested in what the topic is. I’m always happy when I end up just watching though. 😌
Cant go wrong with startalk....

People in the comments are more dehydrated than the moon is. Great episode!
The Moon and the Ocean have more in common than I thought that being our lack of Knowledge of each.
They have found live bacteria on the outside of the space station, and have reanimated frozen bacteria that is ancient.
She's smart, talented, beautiful, and eloquently well spoken.
Love these guys & this podcast! Also this lovely lady's husband is probably the luckiest man on earth, I mean she's a beautiful geologist about to finish her doctorate and has served in the military and has made time to have three children!! Superwoman!
So she's a disgusting war criminal.
incidentally, her husband is Derek Muller (Veritasium).
Wow no way, interesting.
I love how Neil asks her questions about certain things I'm sure he knows the answers to, almost like he's ignorant of what they're talking about.. it's like he's keeping the expert on their toes or reassuring himself of their expertise.
I see it as he's aware of topic, but not an expert. Tapping into the opportunity of someone who's focused on the topic
He is leading the questions for the audience who is not there to ask.
Uh, he's giving his guests a chance to show what they know, obviously.
Sounded a bit patronizing this time, like drilling an undergraduate.
@@seasidescott Hopefully he’s just prepping her for future shows, and fishing for responses in the audience (us,here…sorry my comments are 3 mt’s late).
I had my doubts when I read the title to this video. How can lunar geology POSSIBLY be interesting??
I’m man enough to admit I was wrong. Great video!! 🌙
Neil was outstanding in keeping audience understanding the talk, backing up ideas. Raquel was great and to me looks like Wonder Women :), love the enthusiasm she brought. Chuck is a great catalyst keeping the discussion fun with Neil.
"Hello, I'm the moon. And I like to watch! "
Way to make the moon sound like a creepy perv there Chuck. Lol
Well, the moon's a harsh mistress.
Chauncy Gardner
Yes, the Moon likes to look back at those romantic couples looking up at it :-)
When you think about it, the moon is like a creepy perv. Look up and there it is peeping at you. Except for when it is in the new moon phase.
lol, he never fails to deliver. 😄
This was an amazing show. I have to admit that I needed to look up Chuck’s shirt to see what it meant. I understand it now everyone have a wonderful day and keep giving us this gold. It’s wonderful thank you all.

Man all these kinds of talks turn me on. Small talk doesn't do much for me but somebody with passion and knowledge I could listen to for hours.
I'm a geezer, new to Star Talk. So grateful for these dedicated people picking up where the United States willful failure to education is trying to fill. Sadly, it won't be enough to reverse the trend.
Great episode!! Learned so much about about our closest neighbor in space. Best of luck with the Doctorate, Raquel!

46:08. Actually, one of the definitions of the word 'dark' is to be "hidden from knowledge; mysterious". Therefore the term 'dark side of the Moon' is perfectly valid.
Etymology: dark=concealed or obscured.
Later meaning as in lacking in light is secondary.
Plus that there's always a dark side - the side opposite to the sun. It just moves around.
@@jorgepeterbarton Exactly. As in the 'Dark Ages'.
@@JohnyG29 Right. They were called the Dark Ages because of a lack of historical information available about them, compared to other ages in history. Not because of primitive lighting technology, or because of all the knights.
@@carultch there was a massive cloud coverage for hundreds of years
This is an excellent teaching format for such technical material. Congradulations!
We all love to look up at the wonder of the universe ... and it seems we all equally love to misspell "congraTulations". Its as mysterious as that mateless sock we all encounter after laundry. Neil should do a show on that oddity .
Raquel is sweet, brilliant, and an overall wonderful educator.
I love when Neal asks soft ball questions that he knows everything about just so the guest can answer so he can see if they're right lol savage
That's not what is going on.
He is asking the experts as if he were the audience, so the audience can learn. He is being the host he needs to be for this show!
Thank you for literally just existing. Please don't die.
Raquel has brightened my day..
To be fair to Pink Floyd, the sentence "there is no dark side of the moon" is actually uttered on the album "The Dark Side of the Moon"😋
Well, I just learned the entire moon is actually really dark coloured, so... all sides are dark anyway!??
@@Vadjong Precisely!
Not to say astrophysicists don't call things they can't see dark...cough...
Neil once said that he's never listened to it. :(

40:33 I understand the sentiment here but what if the moon is the remnants of Theia? Would that not make finding a 3rd body impossible?
Great show. Raquel brought lots of energy and knowledge.

Such a unique perspective that the moon has been the witness to the Earth's events. So nice eh

This video was so awesome and informational! Learned some awesome facts from Nuno. The moon is definitely more interesting than I thought. Thank you guys you're doing a great job!
Better than "The space geologist"? Nope, Neal, that's right on point.
Get her on a future episode! That's the second episode I watch just today before sleep
I was hoping you guys would mention the NASA SLS Artemis mission when talking about going to the moon! Hot fire was just a few days ago. Love the show.

I have a question for you Dr Tyson, relating to school and how you did in school. What were your favorite classes? Where’d you go to school? Did you ever have time for a young relationship? What were your hopes and dreams back then? Did you ever think you’d be answering questions from fans on UA-cam?
Thanks Neil.
He went to Columbia for undergrad and Princeton for grad school.

I usually listen to Startalk while doing the dishes. However, when I noticed the dazzling presence of this young lady, I was forced to interrupt the manual task and started to pay intense attention to the screen of my cell phone.
She’s awesome.
I love to see Mr. Nice in awe and get enthusiastic about ideas and information. It reminds me of how I was as a young child. I miss that aspect. Also, I'd like to address the incorrect info about the films mentioned. The title of the film is not Time Travel, it's Time Machine and it's excellent. And in the film Melancholia, it's not the moon that collides with Earth, it's a rogue planet. I wasn't a fan of that film in particular, but the idea behind the storyline is interesting.
I love to see a pretty girl that is also really smart 😍 great episode!

Moon can helps us a lot and never leaves us alone, and it’s going to be with us for ever
But Medhi, the moon is moving away from the Earth, every day. About 2 cm per year
45:43 Who is woopsey doodle? It appears almost in every show?
Neil is awesome on his own. He is great in everything. Having Chuck with him turns his comedy out a bit more. They are definitely the best duo since bonnie and clyde... and anyone else. You name it. Adding comedy to something that would put people to sleep is a relief in our world. To have a laugh and learn stuff, it's amazing. I hereby nominate Neil Degrasse Tyson as the people's champion.
