  • On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are answering a grab bag full of fan-submitted Cosmic Queries on topics ranging from dark matter to the end of the universe.
    What is dark matter? Could it be another universe’s gravity bleeding into our own universe? You’ll learn what the leading possibilities are to explain dark matter. Neil and Chuck dive into field theory. Discover more about our expanding universe. We discuss our eventual collision with the Andromeda galaxy. Neil explains how the universe might have removed chapters from its own history, forever hiding it from us.
    What would it be like if you grew up on Venus? Because of the thick atmosphere, would you be aware of other places in the galaxy? We ponder if we can use gravitational waves to communicate with life in other universes. You’ll also find out how the electromagnetic spectrum serves as a window to the universe.
    To kick off the last segment, Neil gets asked a big question: How does it all end? You’ll hear why the universe will end not in a bang, but, with a whimper. You’ll also hear about “The Big Rip.” Lastly, we explore the SN 1987A - the most recent supernova witnessed by humans. All that plus, we investigate the relationship between science and art.

    Did you know, a lot of us are hooked to star talk, because of the amount Neil talks with his hands. The more hand gestures you use while talking the more it captures your audience.
    *Chuck shouts* "and this man's hands have a mind of their own.."
    It also makes the audience feel like you're more of a warm, agreeable & energetic person. So psychologically, we might only be addicted to the star talk & the way Neil explains things just because of his hands...

The combination of Dr. Tyson and his unique ability to communicate the most complex and comprehensive concepts in astronomy to people without a degree in astrophysics is beyond compare. I love how NDT explains how hopeless the universe is in such a realist's way. It's facts and science and we can't stop it. But it's not intended to make us feel hopeless or meaningless. Instead it encourages us to be curious about our natural surroundings and live life with positivity and charisma because we are alive temporarily, so might as well make it awesome! Plus I'm happy that I lived and that eventually, my remains, whether in ash or fossil, will be on this rocky planet while the sun burns out and we collide with andromeda and just be along for the ride wherever we end up in the infinitely vast emptiness of the vacuum of freezing cold space. What a privilege you and I have to even have developed our atoms and molecules and breathed and lived to witness even the sliver of time our lifespan allows us to take in the beauty and mystery that is the universe! Peace to all😊

    Great episode!! Artists illustrating science for all audiences is a must in my opinion! not only for the functional use of representation of something we can't capture other way, but also to the addition of beauty in the task of engaging more people into this subject. Channels like Kursgesagt - In a nutshell are a good example of it :)

    Feels like am watching a movie about science n the universe with a comedic twist to it.... say... I'd watch a movie with just chuck and our real life living "messiah" Dr Neil as the villain with Chuck as the hero and laughter is his superpowers but it's weird cause Neil is the e-ville mastermind but he naturally loves to laugh... Walla!!! Hollywood masterpiece no doubt... I'll help chuck to write n construct other lesser characters etc... but I've learned so much and still learning about our little dot in the vastness of the universe thanks to u guys. I wish I could be involved in projects to save and better the world in whatever way possible... I wanna help and do something for the planet before I go.

    Chuck is a lot smarter than he lets on. He knows which questions to read and has a grasp on the impact those questions have on people as a whole. His expertise lends an unexpected insight on the subjects he and Neil discuss. Thank you Both for this show.

    • @RayRay-zt7bj
      @RayRay-zt7bj 3 роки тому +1

      I agree. He is smarter than he lets on but sometimes I think I find a slight fault in what he says but then I go back to hear exactly how he phrased it. For example, in this video, I heard Neil say that in the expansion of the universe when everything rips apart, the Sun and the Earth will also rip apart. I was thinking, wait a minute. Isn't the Sun supposed to engulf the Earth when it becomes a red giant in the next few billion years? Then I went back and heard him say, "Except the Sun won't live that long, let's PRETEND that it's still there". Man, I was worried for a moment. Another video in which I thought Neil was challenged, and he actually was. It was the video with Geologist Raquel Nuno. The key thing here is that Neil isn't a Geologist. That woman is pretty smart, and also very attractive. She has a really cool and intelligent husband too.
