I appreciate this video so much. I am working on color mixing right now, and your commentary on the colors here is so helpful! Thanks for all the great info!❤️

Sofft tools will extend use. You will waste a lot, they're not for use with a brush. Pan pastels are awesome for use with pastel pencils, too. 😁 More to buy, right? Also, there are trays to hold the pastels, with one lid, because unscrewing gets tiresome after a while. Love your videos!

Agree, you can’t use Pan pastels with a brush!

    Your haul is a dream!
PanPastels colours are identical to the one we see on the pan if used on pastel paper such as Pastelmat, which is an awesome paper to be used with coloured pencils as well.
49:09 Caran d’Ache didn’t change the names, these are new colours they added a few years ago. There were 76 colours originally and they added 24 three or four years ago. 20 of the new colours are sold in a ‘Portrait Set’ and now they sell also sets with all the 100 colours.

Hey, I just heard you say that the paper you had had sizing because it’s relatively smooth and not rough indicating that texture had to do with whether or not, your paper had been sized or not. Watercolour paper having been sized, either internally or externally or both has to do with a treatment process, not the texture of your paper. You can use rough and coldpressed paper as Wellers hot press paper and they can all have been sized internally and externally.

Pan pastels will be much more saturated if you use their tools itself a brush.

Love the haul! Totally agree with you about the tall sketchbooks. I feel the same about landscape format which is great when drawing scenery but too floppy for vertical buildings when you have to turn the journal vertically. Square formats are solving that issue and more are thankfully available in 100 % cotton. Have fun playing with your new supplies!

i think i heard someone say somewhere that ecolines are so affordable because there are not lightfast. Still good for sketch books. love the haul, thank you!!!

Those Ecolines are refillable. There are bottles of pigment available though some colors are more available than others. I decided to stick with this pen for refillability and I like the feel of their bulk instead of the skinny Tombows. It has been a while since I refilled one, but I believe you have to twist "reverse" to reveal the reservoir.

Also sometimes the nib just dries out and a bit of water solves the problem.

When I want a specific color with the ecoline, I take a water brush (the ones with the tank) and mix it myself! I always keep track of the ratio of the mix, so I always know the color, and I can have a lot more of the color that I like because I buy the 30ml bottle of ecolines! You can try it out for the one that you said you wanted something in between the two :)

When you were swatching the pale aqua you mentioned the Holbein gouache was going down much smoother than your turner gouache, but I noted at the beginning you mentioned your set of turner was the japanesque range. The turner japanesque gouache is not regular acrylic gouache, but rather an extension to their gouache range - it intentionally has a texture that mimics traditional Japanese paint. They have a course consistency with a glue binder, hence why it would feel a bit sticky. If you can get your hands on the regular turner acrylic gouache, it feels much more similar to the Holbein! Hope this helps!

You can fox the broken trays by mixing some 99% alcohol. Get it to a mushy consistency but not flowing. Once done,, put back in its tray and smooth out and let alcohol evaporate. Good as new.
I too suggest using the tools that were made for the pan pastel will not waste as much product as a brush.

Ecoline are die based watercolours, so they are not very white fast, and I recommended to be used for work that you will reproduce in prints I have seen other artists, use the liquid water colours to add different colours to the pens, to customise a colour, such as a bright green, adding a hint of red or brown to neutralise it. Also, they move more if you apply water straight away, but it also really matters what paper you are using moleskin paper is not very good for this. If you use good quality 100% cotton watercolour paper it moves a lot better and if you do it straight away you can often dissolve the line and marks you have put down completely

I got myself two Holbein watercolors and a gouache that I already had. I didn’t have it written in my art book,so oh well. I can’t resist a Chinese orange for some reason…I love sennelier’s watercolor in Chinese orange too, and I’ve got 3 tubes of it. The weird thing is I don’t like orange normally, and I never buy orange paints unless they are in a set…but Chinese orange just gets me every time…

(Sorry for all the notifications for the mass-liking of your videos! I’ve seen all of them more than once bc I like to leave them playing while I’m making art, and then actually sit and watch them later when I’m done with my art session. And when I’m bored but want to watch art videos I always go back to your sketchbook/art journal videos bc those are my favorite. But I just realized that I always forget to Like them, and I know the Likes are helpful for you. So there you go! I’m just gonna go through and make sure I Liked all of them. Please ignore me lol)

Pan pastels remind me of eye shadow. I wonder if i couls use expired eyeshadow as pastels.

You definitely could! Main difference is they won’t be archival so the colors may shift a bit over time. Other than that I don’t think there’d be anything wrong with giving it a go.
