It's fantastic how you can make such beautiful art with these, I am amazed by the way you paint on top of the ink that you have splashed onto the page. Do you consider the colour and placement of the ink with regard to the subject you are then going to sketch onto it? 😊
I'm often asked this question and honestly its totally random. The pages were likely prepared in bulk say 10 spreads at a time weeks or months ago. I just turn over the page and work on whatever is there. Let me know if you'd like to see a video on this method ?
@@OhnMarWinArt very interesting, thank you, I don't feel brave enough to do that! Yes a future video could help I think if you have time and would like to 😊
I love these pencils, they're so SOLID. I don't know how else to describe them, they hold up to every paper, every sharpener, every drop, every abusive thing I've done to them...and the fact that I can do a whole piece with only one color really shows they lay down both light and heavy and blend like a dream!

This is one of your best yet! Seeing the use of the luminance colored pencils was eye opening. Wowsers. Can’t wait to incorporate this kind of use in my art sketchbook.
I've been watching different artist's videos. I like to see how they are seeing. You are so talented. You use lines and inks much more than other artists I've been watching. I'm used to watching artists who are loser with their style impressionistic with lines indicating power and motion. This is different, putting down the impressionism with the underneath, adding light and color, following all this with lines and adding more color and highlights. It's great and is opening new vistas for me. Thank you.
@@OhnMarWinArt I especially liked seeing how you used your pencils to add the details on top of the watercolor and ink. I struggle with knowing which details to add and when to stop so it doesn’t look like a color book page. Hearing you talk about why you are doing something (while watching you do it) is so helpful.
I love these pencils too and your tutorial will help me get even more out of them. I’ll explore the world of combining them with watercolour. Happy days of exploration lie ahead. PS what I love about these pencils is the density of colour that can be achieved easily , as well as the softness and blending capabilities.
Thanks for swatching your Luminance pencils! Those aubergines are really yummy :) And it was really fun to see the Italian scenes emerging beautifully from the mix of materials.
Perfect timing for this video. I just purchased a set of watercolor pencils and playing with them in my sketches. I really like the feel of the pencil and feel this tool is just what I was looking for.

These Italian landscapes are sooooooo amazing! I am fascinated how easily you create those images! From all artists that I follow, you are my favorite! :) Last summer my boyfriend gave me the box of 40 luminance pencils for my birthday and I looove using them. Because in the box, there weren`t enough greens, I bought a few green Polychromos Pencils from Faber Castell and I must say, the quality is very similar. But they only cost half of the luminance - here in Germany. Maybe its because its a german brand.
You are so kind to say - I'm honoured❤ I would LOVE to try other colour pencil brands. However I'd rather try a few different pencils in a 'real' shop before committing to buying them. Although I may buy a few Faber Castells online to see how they handle.
Loved seeing your process for approaching the Italian scenes from Katie’s zoom session! I went in directly with gouache and then added the neocolor and color pencil the way Katie does but I couldn’t achieve the look that I was going for 😅 thanks for sharing! ❤
You have the most elegant penmanship. This is my first video and I immediately subscribed. Great info and excited to learn more exciting things from you ❤
Another lovely video. So lovely to see your collection. but to see how you use them was the most useful. It always amazes me to see how fast you work. My perfectionism always gets in the way but I see that this is something that you have really practiced with timed studies and I can also see how you use the same teqnicues as in your skillshare class on toned paper. I think I need to start doing timed studies.
The time studies really forces me to make fast decisions, so I include essentials and areas of high contrast. This often captures the essence of a piece.
I'm slowly building up my Luminance collection and there are so many great recommendations here so thank you for sharing Ohn Mar! I now have a long wish list! 😂It was so wonderful to see your process for the Italy livestream and so useful to hear your techniques. Your use of contrast and line is always wonderful!
😂Sorry to add to your art supplies list -we always feel we need ‘more’ !!! It was one of my favourite sessions - I think the chatter kept me calm because I knew I was filming
First off, I love seeing what you do with the pencils… drawing with permanent color pencils together with watercolors is not something I’ve tried yet, but after seeing your video I definitely will! On the Luminance lineup, I just find that their color palette is beyond lovely. I am very drawn to the Anthraquinoid Pink and use it to color blushing cheeks! Another color that’s in the same vein, but a bit different, more subdued, that you should consider trying out, is the Herculanum Red 068… it is LOVELY 😻
I know my American art friends love the Prismacolor but its trickier to get hold of them in the UK. I might buy a handful online to compare and contrast. Like many of the products and brands I use some of my decisions are based on easy availability and shipping costs.
@@OhnMarWinArt Thanks so much for note. I totally get making decisions on availability and cost. I'm in the US so feel free to ping me if I an help with shipping in anyway :)
Thank you so much!❤ This was fantastic! I really enjoyed seeing how you use the Luminance! How long do you typically wait for your watercolor base layer to dry before adding colored pencil on top? Do you find that different papers, mainly cotton vs wood pulp, dry at different rates for using this technique? Do you use this technique while on the go… sketching outside? I’ve been trying this technique with colored pencil over watercolor or watercolor pencils and sometimes I get frustrated with having to wait for drying time. I mainly use Museum Aquarelle (I carry 50 different pencils 😂), and Derwent Drawing with a few favorite Luminance colors like Dark Indigo 639, Grey Blue 755, Paynes Grey 50%, and Dark Phthalo Green 719. I find these Luminance colors fill in the gaps and compliment the Derwent Drawing 24 set for me. I would definitely love to see more of what you do with colored pencils. Your videos are so inspiring, and such a pleasure to watch. Thank you for taking the time to record, edit, create these videos! Edited to say… I really like that Caran D’Ache gives the pigment information for both the Luminance and the Museum Aquarelle, but did it a tiny bit frustrating that they don’t have the exact same set of pencils in both lines, and that some colors with the same names/numbers can look quite different. 😆
I love hearing what other artists enjoy using. The watercolor drying time really depends on several factors 1)the weather or season 2)size of brush 3)water ratio. Painting in south of France in summer compared to autumn in NYC will mean different wait times when on location. If I’m at home I’ll use a gentle hair dryer
I come from watercolor & graphite experience. I've begun to enjoy color pencils. I have researched the pigments in Carn d Arche and wonder if I should focus on Single pigment pencils? Does this avoid mud as with watercolor? I want to order a few colors I like.
Can you tell me what the white opaque paint brush thingy you are using in the final drawing? I'm probably describing it wrong, but it sure makes the drawing pop.
Absolutely love how you combine splashes of color with details. Any tips on prepping pages? I try to do this but the color ends up overwhelming any sketching I do.

Your color spirit is like mine: earthy, warm, rich and deep, on the brown side. Maybe autumnal is the word. If the color blend had a taste, the taste of truffles. Or the aroma of roasted chestnuts, the ground smell of oak woods in October and November. The richness of the way these hues sort of "speak" reminds me of the way wool takes traditional dyes. You can feel the color through your hand working with materials like this. The way some people are synaesthetic, feeling one thing through the senses used for another, like tasting colors, comes more easily with a palette like this. Memory of being in a place mixes the senses for you in the deep emotional brain, and this was being in a November wood without fear.
Why do you choose these pencils instead of prismacolour or polychromos. Is it the colour choices. Also i wondered if you've tried derwent drawing pencils for fur and feather but also good for landscapes
