    My first time watching one of your videos. One minute and seven seconds in and I'm hooked. The minute I heard you say you wanted something other than white paper I thought hallelujah finally someone else that feels the same way I do. White paper feels a bit printer paper or grade school to me and it's getting harder and harder to find ivory paper and something not too yellow.

    Hi Lauren! Do you still enjoy this formula? I’m thinking of trying it out… it’s between this or Liquitex soft body.

    • @LaurenBellArt
      @LaurenBellArt 24 дні тому

      Hi! I do still use this as it’s more economical. If you can swing the Liquitex soft body I’d say go for it! I haven’t tried it but from what I’ve seen it’s very similar in terms of body and having a more matte to satin finish to it. I’ll probably switch to them at some point just for convenience but for now I’m enjoying the savings. What I use ends of being like $8-10 for 8 ounces of paint. I think the soft body is 3 times as much for the same amount.

    Thank you for recommending this box! I had thought about doing something like this for gouache and watercolor so I would have extra-large wells, but in my quick searches I was only finding boxes with the removable dividers. I found your recommended box at Michaels and was pleased by how inexpensive it was (a plus!) I have now had it filled with Liquitex Basics (straight from the tube) for a month or so, and the paint is still completely wet. I did initially spray the paints with a little bit of water and have done that a few more times, but I am not sure it is really necessary, as they never really appear to be any more dry/thickened than before, but I still give them a spritz to be safe. The one other thing I did do, though I am not sure it is strictly necessary, is stretch a piece of plastic wrap (Cling Wrap, Sarah Wrap) across the area of the wells before closing the lid. I have found that when opening the box, this plastic remains stretched and attached to the lid, meaning it does not start bunching up and sticking to itself like one might imagine. It just remains there neatly, even though I had originally smoothed the excess plastic down around the box sides, not the lid, if that makes sense. But this means I can open and close it without problems and any extra effort and the plastic remains like a membrane on the underside of the lid. I assume this is making it more air tight, although I never notice any condensation on the inside of the box, as you might imagine you would see. Maybe it is not airtight or maybe that just has to do with the current temp/humidity in my house. But in any case, the paint is not drying! Whoo hoo!

    Before I started creating as a practice I never felt bad about the fact that I never picked up a paint brush . Now that I have a creative practice where I’m painting way more than when I wasn’t painting . Now I feel guilty??? Where is the logic in that? Perhaps we just need to shift our perspective . 😂 beautiful sketches

    Your journals are great, I know what you mean about mixing up our art practices. I did solid watercolour for 3 years and now am exploring lots of different things. I dont really have those interesting backgrounds, or those reference pics , so I guess step one is getting together materials ans collage papers.

    • @LaurenBellArt
      @LaurenBellArt 2 місяці тому

      Yes! It’s totally about just gathering some things you like. Even reusing envelopes and mail and slapping some paint and marks on can make great collage paper. A few acrylic paints and a stack of papers can really go a long way.

    When I want a specific color with the ecoline, I take a water brush (the ones with the tank) and mix it myself! I always keep track of the ratio of the mix, so I always know the color, and I can have a lot more of the color that I like because I buy the 30ml bottle of ecolines! You can try it out for the one that you said you wanted something in between the two :)

    • @frocktopus9429
      @frocktopus9429 3 місяці тому

      My painting hack is, because bedridden, and spasms, I can’t always use a lot of wet mediums. I do ok with waterbrushes and watercolour pallette most the time, but even with that, I sometimes throw/spill the pallette and the water mixed paint goes everywhere. I now have a rough piece of plastic, that I draw on with neocolor 2 and stabilo woodys, then pick up the pigment from that on a water brush. 💜

    • @LaurenBellArt
      @LaurenBellArt 3 місяці тому

      This one is tricky because it depends what your level of tolerance is. Like regular gel and matte medium don’t really have an odor to me. Stuff for oil painting does have an odor but I don’t notice it for acrylic. If the acrylic medium odors cause issues for you the best I could probably suggest is to stick with water based - so watercolor and gouache if you’d like something more opaque (not the acrylic on though as that might cause the same issue as acrylic paint. I don’t notice an odor from Holbein acrylic gouache though)

    Ecoline are die based watercolours, so they are not very white fast, and I recommended to be used for work that you will reproduce in prints I have seen other artists, use the liquid water colours to add different colours to the pens, to customise a colour, such as a bright green, adding a hint of red or brown to neutralise it. Also, they move more if you apply water straight away, but it also really matters what paper you are using moleskin paper is not very good for this. If you use good quality 100% cotton watercolour paper it moves a lot better and if you do it straight away you can often dissolve the line and marks you have put down completely

    Hey, I just heard you say that the paper you had had sizing because it’s relatively smooth and not rough indicating that texture had to do with whether or not, your paper had been sized or not. Watercolour paper having been sized, either internally or externally or both has to do with a treatment process, not the texture of your paper. You can use rough and coldpressed paper as Wellers hot press paper and they can all have been sized internally and externally.

    Thanks Lauren, definitely going to set up a palette box. I have a small one for gouache but never thought about using a larger one for acrylics.😊
