Log Cabin Build EP 18: I open up for the door and more...
I edited out a lot of the sawing as I guess you don't want to see that.
If you're new:
Hi! When I was 18 years old I ventured out alone with only a backpack full of simple hand tools to actualize my dream. Build my own traditional off grid log cabin by hand from the materials of the Swedish wilderness. Just like our Forefathers did.
I had no previous experience in building, gathering materials or filming. So I started studying myself the old arts and learning from my grandfather and mentor Åke Nilsson. I began to cut down trees and film with my phone, learning as I go. My project started full time once I graduated high school in summer 2019. I film everything myself and edit these videos so you can follow my journey and hopefully learn as I do.
Remember to subscribe so you can follow my journey! Enjoy the video!

Ok, I am in awe of what accuracy you have with both the hand axe and the two hander, but the groove you cut in the door and window frames blows my mind. The vertical groove is fairly straight forward, it's the top of the door frame that gets me. Half of the log just chopped away so cleanly... That's really impressive to me. I mean I sure can swing an axe to split some logs for fire wood, but this accuracy and skill has me speechless.

Today's people are so disconnected both in terms of our history, where we come from and not least nature's pantry - Relax ... Here in Sweden we have woodwork in school, grades 3-9.... We are not seldom born and raised in a wooden house of some kind ... It's all about context and history - Sweden is 70% covered by forest and the rest wetlands, lakes, mountains ... Only 3-5% is built-up land - We also have something called "right of public access" "which means that all land may be used by all ... Camping, making fire, building temporary huts of fallen trees ... All with the responsibility of the individual to clean up after himself, so that the place looked like it did before - Furthermore, when it comes to felling trees, you must by law plant what you harvest.
Sweden's soul is trees, trees and trees again ... From Viking ships to today's modern wooden houses.
Poor people of today who ignore history / context ... They are the problem!
Cheers Erik...You are a good ambassador for Sweden💪🏼🪓🔨🛖👍🏼
jv sandell That comment deserves to be pinned so that all viewers can know this about Sweden!
Makes me wonder about the context of these buildings in the past - was it done by a family, or collectively by the wider community? It's fascinating to see it being done by one person, but it immediately seems like a job that would be speeded up hugely by, say, 4 men working together (and then the favour would be returned). In my country, England, I think the business of building houses was done by local builders quite early on (8th century on?) rather than by each family.
Also, were people able to pick a place to build, or was that decided by large landowners?
Questions...!
Thanks I was wondering how he could cut trees
Well you have to own the land to fell trees
@@sroberts605 I think in most cases men used to do it completely on their own, here's why: Skandinavia is not so densely populated like the rest of Europe. So there were not many neighbours around. In case the next neighbours were not too far away, they still had a path of considerable length between them and animals, farmland and possibly another job like carpenter to take care of during the day.
As he said there is a law of public access, which apparently means you can build such a wooden cabin anywhere in the forest for as long as you plant the same number of trees afterwards which is pretty cool. In Germany and England there were always a dozen people around to help building a house because everyone was living in villages. Therefore people had larger farmhouses and didn't live in cabins but they also had to have a stricter concept of land-ownership to avoid quarrel.
this is very pure, a reminder of what it means to be human.
Is it weird i'm disappointed he didn't completely forget to make a hole for a door until the cabin was fully built and furnished?

Just imagine the amount of footage he had to go through and edit to make this video... if it really took him a year to do this, which I 100% believe since he didn't use a single power tool... then he had weeks of raw video footage to review and cut down to a few hours for the series of these videos. that was probably more tedious than building the dang cabin itself.
