I made this trip by rail when I was an architecture student in Rome. After a frustrating day in Milan (and a horrible time in the Milano stazione) I boarded the night train that crossed into Switzerland. When I awoke I thought I was in Paradise, arriving at my ultimate destination Lugano still in the early morning. I spent the entire day in a rapture. It really was like a dream.
Brilliant video! Also, the descriptions of key areas such as the tunnels including year of completion is above and beyond! Thanks for the quality upload. Instant subscriber here!

Another great video with superb definition that takes me back to my holidays in Switzerland. We stayed twice near Lugano at Claro just north of Bellinzona. Couldn't believe it was as far back as 2002 and 2004. It was camping Al Censo roughly at 1;11:10. The Gothard base tunnel was under construction and we had a guided tour at Biasca. (1:19:55). Unfortunately we couldn't understand the language but that project was a fantastic feat of engineering. Those kind of projects are mind blowing.

What a journey! Thanks for taking me on my first, and only, trip through the Gotthard Base Tunnel. I've travelled from Bellinzona to Arth-Goldau a few times, and once on to Lausanne. It was interesting on these trips to hear the onboard language priority change: Italian to German after the tunnel, and at Biel/Bienne to French: English was always last! A wonderful video.

Just finished watching your train video. It's a very long video, but I am gradually working my way through it. The first part from Mendrisio to Bellinzona is great and has not been seen much on previous videos. On a technical point, I have often wondered, with the neutral power sections such as that shown at 2:17:58, what action does the driver have to take? There didn't seem to be any significant change in the sound of the locomotive. I thought there was an audible alert message as the neutral section was passed, but I couldn't hear it clearly.
Shut off the main switch and turn it back on afterwards. There's in no audible signal. Vectrons also generate power with the traction motors to run the machinery, so there is not much audible difference. In other locomotives it gets pretty quiet.

I always loved the valleys surrounded with tall mountains with small villages scattered across the hills and sides of the mountains, it's something that never gets old, be it when everything is green or when there's snow in the mountains! Outside of the Alps and further north, the landscape isn't as striking although it isn't boring flat either.
Great video Lori,Danke. It was nice to see the first piece Mendrisio - Bellinzona, not seen a video of that before although I have travelled on that line many times.
