  • For the first time on UA-cam, experience the Lötschberg alpine pass in 4K, with many interesting facts about things you see along the way, including abandoned tunnels, junctions, former stations and more.
Station names are complete with their altitude and gradients are shown in the top right corner, to give you an idea of what the locomotives are dealing with.
Today we're travelling with 2 Siemens locomotives belonging to the Eurosprinter family, specifically ES 64 F4, equipped to operate in many countries under AC & DC supply power. Leading is a Swiss owned Re 474 and behind it, a leased MRCE Br 189. This is also the first video with a bank locomotive (which pushes from behind), which is required for trains over 1'400t at these gradients to avoid breaking the couplings. See if you can spot it in the rear view camera - although it will be tricky because it's quite a long train.
For those who aren't familiar with Swiss geography, the north is generally hilly with flat parts here and there, whereas the south lies in the middle of the alps, which span from Austria to the east right across to France in the southwest. The first alpine crossing was achieved through the Gotthardbahn in 1882, which runs from central Switzerland to the southern most tip in Ticino.
In 1906, the BLS (Bern - Lötschberg - Simplon) was founded, who pioneered the alpine crossing over the Lötschberg pass, where we will be travelling today. In 2007, a base tunnel was opened, avoiding the steep ramps of the mountain pass and cutting time off the overall journey, however only one third is double tracked, reducing its capacity.
This has led to most northbound freight trains taking the mountain route, while southbound trains tend to be routed through the tunnel, hence most cab ride videos on youtube showing the mountain route being northbound.
Unfortunately the sound was ruined by the air conditioner about halfway into the journey. Sorry for the inconvenience.

One of the finest videos I have ever watched. I have always wanted to become a locomotive pilot, but ended up in a different profession. I don't know how tough is to get a railway job in Switzerland but in India its like getting a Nobel prize. I don't know whether I will ever be able to make it to Switzerland or not but thanks to you I am living my dream of becoming a loco pilot. A ton of thanks to you for making my dream partially come true.

Doesn't matter how many times I've watched this journey on YT, it is still one of the most extraordinary climbs and engineering feats on any railway. That said, this is by far the best version of it. Thank you for a very informative and entertaining video!

When I was a kid, we were shown photos of Switzerland. Tall snow-covered mountains. Big lakes surrounded by. You guessed it snow covered mountains. To get flat land you had to go to another country. I have learnt a lot in the last 60 years. Our tallest mountain is Mount Kosciuszko coming in at a terrifying height of 2,228 metres.

Hello, I am from Romania! Thank you!
165 years have passed since the inauguration of the oldest railway on the current territory of Romania, between Oraviţa and Baziaş line was originally built to transport coal from Anina, Bocşa, and Oraviţa to the Danube, in the Port of Baziaş (built in 1795 by the Austrians, the second most important after Constanţa), where it was to be loaded on ships, and from there, transported on the Danube to the Empire, hence the name Koklenbahn (coal line).

Google Earth has revealed the location of the mountain area opposite the power transmission relay tower on the left side of the railway track.
The mountain opposite the line of sight beyond the transmission tower in front of this Ausserberg station.

I always wanted to ride up front with the train driver, even on my daily suburban commutes to work and back on the Lilydale line in Victoria, Australia. Of course our suburban routes don’t hold a candle to the amazing railway systems of Europe, with their scenery etc. Thank you so much to all of you folks like Lorirocks and “railcowgirl” … and all the rest of you enthusiasts who bring your art and adventure to UA-cam.

You are traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. Your next stop, the Twilight Zone!
    " All aboard"!
The night train is the only means of travel in and out of the twilight zone. It is not so much a place as it is a time. For every passenger the experience is different. Tonight many will feel the need to sleep but before they do....the Night Train may have something special instore for it's passengers!
"Excuse me....Mr. Conductor"? "What stop is up next"?
" The town is called 'Anywheresville' mam".
"What kind of name is that for a town..... I've never heard of it"!
"It's everything and anything for everyone mam".
" What do you mean by that"?!
....." Mam....if you get off at Anywheresville you can just make a wish upon stepping off the Night Train and it will be so".
In this episode everyone on this train wants to just 😴
But imagine if you will, a place where you can grow up again. A place where you can change your life as you know it. Anything is now possible if you step off! But be warned..... there's no coming back. So if sleep is all you need then I suggest you close your eyes and by pass the next stop. This stop is a place that also exists in your dreams....or a Night Train going anywhere....in the twilight zone.

Absolutely love these videos. About how long does it take for that "auto train" to go from station to station. And how long to drive?

The train ride itself takes 15 Minutes. All in all the car train would save you an hour over driving through the Gotthard Road Tunnel, depending on where your journey starts. Say from Basel to Zermatt you could save an hour, but from Zurich to Zermatt you wouldn't save any time at all.

Thank you. Watching this video made a perfect end to my Christmas Day! Beautiful scenery, and lots of very interesting trains 'going the other way' (including relief passenger trains).. The video was clearly taken on a winter Saturday, as there were lots of leisure travelers both on rail and road! I think it was either 22nd or 29th February, as that was 'Karneval' in some parts of Europe.

I love watching these. Being in "behind the eons" Cincinnati Ohio on a continent far, far, away. I like tracing on a map where the various joining lines are heading off to, or in from The only map I have found so far "SBB CFF FFS" is little help at the junctions [probably meant for tourists], often not showing things like the grauholztunnel route. Interesting construction by the way. Can you or any other viewers suggest a better on-line map of these wonderful rail lines.

Nice video. The first part with the mountain pass is as close to heaven as you can be. Beautiful scenery, with snow covered mountain tops and front seat to all the beauty inside the cab of the Siemens loco (i think its class 189 in Germany) Also spotted its latest brother, the Vectron in some stations :). Also interesting to see how the train driver was handling the train down the steep slopes 2.5, 3 %, that's pretty big for any train, not to mention a 1500 tons one.

This is the best video so far! If you ever ride a SIM train over the Loetschberg ramps, I'd be happy if you can make a video too.

We travelled this route lots of times as we frequently stayed at Kandersteg for the holidays. I love to travel by train especially in Switzerland. I have some amazing footage of trains on this route. Those were made from the footpath along and above the tracks. I'am afraid that they will close this route in the near future. In my opinion that would be a mistake. I enjoyed watching your video.
