  • If cold promotes deep sleep and warmth initiates REM...what would happen if you put your body through BOTH temperature extremes overnight?
Well, I decided to find out with my Eight Sleep. And the results are...not what I expected.

In my opinion, the only temperature we are concerned with is the temperature touching our body. Whether that temperature is provided by the gloves that have been warmed to body temperature or provided by the eight sleep that can provide any temperature within a given range.
So if I use the eight sleep and I set the temperature to 55° and the bed is 55° then we're talking about 55°.
However, if I wear six pair of pants, seven shirts, three sweatshirts, two jackets a down coat, and two sleeping bags... then after the initial time it takes to reach equilibrium after my body heat warms that stuff up, I'll be dealing with the temperature well above 55°.
So, I've just defeated the whole purpose of sleeping on a bed that's 55°.
In my opinion, you should let the eight sleep figure out adjusting the temperature for you. Not the gloves and hat and layers of clothing that you're wearing.

Thanks for the great insights! I'm desperate to try the Eight Sleep but they don't seem to make it in my mattress size of Twin XL. Have you heard if this is in the works for a future release?

Did you just do the coldest setting (-10) on the eight sleep or both in one night? I'm a bit confused about your study design and then the results you discussed. What about the results from the warmest settings? Also, were there differences in the phases comparing gloves and socks on vs off?

That was exactly my questions that I posted. I was confused as to her results. When did she get the best results? Was it the cold or warm settings? What happened with the socks/glove result? She has not answered so far. I hope she gets to read the comments, so she can help her viewers.

My common sense and knowledge would theorize two different options that could explain your results. 1. When we go way back in the evolution humans are actually built for sleeping smaller amounts at a time multiple times during the day. So this experiment could simulate those interrupted conditions and actually improve your overall results. 2. Other option and what I would bet on is that your horrible nighttime experiences made your body pump out more hormones, adrenaline etc. to cope and keep you going short term. However I would argue that if you'd kept going for longer perioids of time your scores would tank big time when your body just can't keep up with it anymore. However interesting study and results! Thanks for sharing.

I think you're partially right on 2, but the body wont lose that battle.
We're used to sleeping in the outdoors. A lot of cultures, especially near the Cradle of Civil and that whole Out of Africa stuff... sleep specifically around 12 - 4 pm.
Id posit that it's more like taking a cold shower. The body can handle it like a champ, it's our coddled suburban brain that finds it revolting!

I am not understanding your results. When did you get the best results? Warm or cold settings?

I felt my best results were when I actually let the autopilot run itself because the temperature fluctuations were much less.

Super interesting! I like your thought on cycling on/off with this as a sort of fast/cleanse. I need to invest in an 8 sleep!

30 seconds in. Cold is great for sleep. 3:19 Ha! That's 12C, that is a perfect temp. Maybe the bed sucking the heat out makes it different, you should have had a great sleep at 12c. I use a sleeping bag and sheet and i have to pin in the corners to keep warm. For like 5 minutes after first laying down it is all about building the warm. I live in Canada and just have my window open some nights. My bed is by an outside wall under the window. In summer i have an AC in that window.

Just got my Quieton 3.1 this last week. No matter what I did I could not hear a noise reduction of the TV, Fan, or grass blower. I watched all of the videos from Quieton and UA-cam on how to use these. I tried every foam fitting with no luck. I had my wife try them and they didn't work for her. I have Bose II air buds, but only one bud is working. I emailed the company requesting a refund. They suggested using UPS International. To ship these will cost $283. I am now waiting to video chat with Tech Support at 1am tomorrow morning. For next day support team could only be reached between 1am to 5 am. I have an engineering background in software and hardware, but hasn't helped me to get these to work.

I do not have a 8 sleep, but temperature control is definitely a huge factor in sleep. With everything pretty static, I have a room temperature that works best for me on most occasions. The value of your studies is immense. Great to see that you are in a better place now.

    Several questions,
-did your HRV increase because you're up more at night
-did you see different results with socks and gloves
    -did deep sleep improve

I find this experiment interesting from a data stand point. But I feel some very key factors are being left out. In Chinese Traditional Medicine, as well as Ayurveda and many other 'old world medicine science' viewpoints, you are leaving out BIG key factors. In winter, in Northern California, your blood is different than that of summer. It is thicker for the cold weather. Therefore, your experiment needs to be done in all the seasons to get an actual proper data record of any substance. Our bodies, like the seasons are not always the same, so our blood changes too with the seasons. The problem with western ideas is the assumption that a machine will read us and it will be a proven fact for all time. Then there is the age of a woman who is in menopause to take into consideration. This study of yours only scratches the surface of basic human response to cold/hot experiments at night. I beg to ask you to do more research before putting out so called 'knowledge' By the way, I have this same machine and I switch it according to season, sickness, and lately my changing age. Time place and circumstance is a human factor to never be left out of a scientific study. without it, we are treating our bodies like machines....we are changing bodies, not same same like a data test might suggest.

She said it's not a truly scientific study, it's just the best study she could do. If you want to do your own with some additional scientific additions, please feel free to do so... and please share your results.
