  • NYO-USA performs America the Beautiful, the final encore of the orchestra’s Carnegie Hall debut on July 22, 2014, under the direction of David Robertson. Watch additional highlights from this concert at: bit.ly/1nCz8oF
    America the Beautiful's lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates and the music was composed by Samuel A. Ward. This arrangement, by Philip Rothman, was commissioned by Carnegie Hall for the 2014 NYO-USA.

    Each summer, Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young musicians from across the country (ages 16-19) to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA). In 2014, following a two-week training residency with leading professional orchestra musicians, these remarkable teenagers were joined by conductor David Robertson and violinist Gil Shaham for an eight-city coast-to-coast US tour.     These young people are so talented and sound awesome! Watching them brings back memories of my days as a young musician. I hope they continue playing throughout their lives! 🎶

    As a Trombone 3 in another group playing this song, the 16ths on this song are not as straightforward as one might think. Good job brass here. I listened to this to get a feel for what it is supposed to sound like…
