  • Today Dominic comes back after being sick and takes a look at the XFX RX 590 Fatboy GPU - and we find out it is not as good as the Sapphire RX590 Nitro+ that we reviewed a few weeks ago. The XFX is either loud and cool, or quiet and REALLY hot.

Dustin Doyle if you pay attention and also read the review you will see there is more to it than performance. Such as cooling and noise and two useless bios settings on the xfx.

As a owner of a XFX RX590 I can with high confidence say the XFX version of this card is not worth it. It's a MASSIVE pain to keep cool when used inside a case... like we do in the real world. With the case open, aircon on full, and a huge floor fan blasting air into the side of it, I was able to keep the card at around 75°C while gaming with the card running completely stock.
That is not a realistic way to use the thing though. With case closed, and 5 case fans, if I play a heavy game for about 2 hours, the card would crash. After a restart and going back into the game, it would then crash after about 15 minutes. This means the card is getting heavily heat soaked and my bet is that it's the stupid steel plate XFX used to bridge the gap between the VRAM modules and the main cooler.
Gamers Nexus did a video where they took it apart before even running the thing and just by looking at it suggested that the steel plate will be terrible. They were right. If only I saw that video before I thought about buying this stupid card...
When gaming, the damn thing blasted so much hot air everywhere in the case that it made my PCIe-1 slot overheat as well. I didn't even think to look at that until the ASUS software came up with a warning about the slot overheating. Crazy...
Synthetic tests would not make the card crash. I even tried manually lowering the fan speed so the GPU temp would climb past 80°C and although the card would thermal throttle like crazy, it would not crash. Run the game on the other hand for long enough and it would crash. The game in question is War Thunder and I also experienced the same crashing with Atlas.
Note, this is a hardware level crash... NOT software. After the crash, a simple reset would not bring it back. You have to power down the machine completely and then power it again before the display output would return. This means it's not a software crash, but a hardware level crash. Something on the card is overheating and causing it to crash. I can't verify what exactly since I don't have the right means to check what the thermals are for some of the components on the card.
Again, my bet is the VRAM since some idiot at XFX thought using steel to make up for their crappy cooler design was a better idea than just fixing the cooler design. And then to make it even worse, they were to cheap to add any thermal compound between said steel plate and the main cooler...
I have now moved the card to my 2de PCIe slot and mounted a 92mm, 4000 rpm fan (so 6 case fans now) just above the card on the rear of the case to try and pull as much hot air out as possible. This made my whole rig ridiculously loud and even if I manually set all case fans to 100% the card will still get up to 78-80°C when playing War Thunder for long enough.
Note, it is now winter here in South Africa and we see about 17-20°C during the day. During our summer we will see double that. So my current cooling is clearly not enough and after spending 2 days messing around with setup changes and thermal testing I have no choice but to cut a hole in my case to try and mount a fan on the bottom of the case to blast air straight up at the card and hope that makes enough of a difference for when summer comes around.
I did contact xfx about the issue and their official response was that I cannot return it and if I'm not happy with it I should try selling it on the used market. What a shait company...
I know this is not AMD's fault, but I'm done with AMD graphics and I will make sure everyone I know will stay far away from XFX. These companies love to under estimate the amount of influence we as IT professionals have. I myself have been building machines since high school and has worked as a software dev for 12 years now and in my 20 years of working with PCs I have never ever had overheating issues.
Currently my AMD fx8320 CPU is overclocked from 3.5Ghrz to 4.5Ghrz... it will max out in the low 50s while gaming. I did this with a cooler I salvaged from an old overclocked Intel system and then made my own steel brackets in my garage to make the cooler fit properly for my AMD setup. XFX has tons of engineers and loads of cash and couldn't handle cooling a stock card...
Screw you XFX. I out cooled XFX with some stainless steel bolts and nuts, a angle grinder, and some anti rust spray paint. XFX is pathetic.

Dude, in all honesty, thank you.
I am looking to upgrade from an R9 390X with such similar heat issues, mine was from Gigabyte, and I "made due" but I've spent 5 years trying to avoid 100c crashes in my computer at 720p resolutions with a card that should be doing so much more. I'm staying the hell away from this XFX card and just getting the sapphire - seriously thank you for the heads up.

You might be better off looking at a GTX1660. It's basically the same performance, but only 130 watts instead of the RX590 225watts... same performance at almost half the power draw and the less power draw there is the less heat there is to worry about. If you can wait and save up a bit more, the GTX 1660ti might be an ever better buy IMO. Hope it works out for you.

You should not take criticism of a product so personally just because you happen to own it. My criticism is not directed at you or anyone who happens to own this exact product... it's aimed at the product and the brand. Furthermore, you are correct in that the GPU it self will not overheat. You can try this yourself... manually stop the fans and run a game. The GPU will down clock so hard that the game will barely run, but it won't overheat and you can see this with the app HWMonitor. The memory modules are a different story as XFX used a steal plate to help "cool" them, but steel is terrible for this kind of application. The memory modules is what overheated for me and those temps you can NOT see in HWMonitor.
      Objectively speaking:
      1. The RX590 chip set draws too much power for the performance it delivers. There are options that give the same FPS numbers at half the power draw of which the GTX1660ti is but one. You don't have to like it... this is just a fact.
      2. XFX reused the exact same cooler from their RX580 which was not good to begin with. They are using steel in their cooler design... steel is horrible for this kind of cooling.
      3. The experience of dealing with XFX support horrible.
After much argueing, XFX agreed to take back the card for testing and 4 days later I got a refund because I was right. 😉
Again, my criticism was directed at he product and XFX... not any person who may own this product. @@dancogames12332

The mentioned negatives are not a major concern as you can easily adjust important settings in Wattman. From my own experiences with a RX 570, there is a rather large headroom for undervolting on Polaris. So if you want to stay on stock clocks, you can easily tame the noise and temperature levels quite a bit. And what I consider a big plus is FreeSync support. You can get an amazingly smooth experience even with one of the cheaper models with a limited FreeSync range. Hence I'd rather pick such an AMD card over every Nvidia offering (AMD's pricing is also considerably better nowadays).

Just got to building my first PC and Just nabbed one of these for £170 from CCL computers, dont know if thats good but for the power it sedms like a deal. It was this or a 4gb 5500xt for the same price and went for this because of the 590 being 200+ everywhere else - some were £300!? Think the sapphire was around £234 - and an extra 4gb memory on the 590 along with a ryzen 5 3400g, 16gb 3000mhz ram and 500gb m2 ssd for £700 with an asus b450m-a mboard...

Just ordered one of these from the egg to replace a xfx rx 580 black edition bought 3 days ago at best buy. After the $20 rebate its an even swap at $219.99.
I learned quite a bit from the RX 580 black like the preset fan control is set to cook the card rather than make noise. Hell you have to access the AMD global wattman setting and turn off zero fan. Yes the card would cook with the fans OFF by design.
With some tweaking the 580 does well in MWO I would imagine the clock boost with the 590 should do ever slightly better or as good with less stress.

Sorry but the Comment about thermal throttling is simply wrong since its power limit throttling. The Card is only not going for the max clock since the TDP is configurated at 196 Watt in bios. since it has the higher core clock you have to use the increased power Limit. If you increase the memory to 2100MHz too its faster then the Nitro. even the 2250Mhz are possible. !BUT . Due to the Design i wouldn't recomment doing this since 1 Memory bracket is placed in the front between the CPU and the VRMs. Since there is no Temp Sensor you dont know how high in temperature this chip is going. Warranty wise they will know you had extreme overclock if only this one chip is faulty. I don't know how XFX is reacting to overclocking damage. The Nitro uses the same memory placement.
The Testcard i had was able to go with 1580 core (more possible but irrelevant), 1075 vcore , 2250 memory (don't recomment it whithout checking with Infrared checking temp - a thermalpad on the backsite between pcb and backplate with removed plastic cover can increase cooling), powerlimit +50. which resultet in a furmark fps increase from 115 fps to 130 and 199Watt power draw.

What is your opinion about your Farboy after 9 month? Good choice to buy?

You couldn't pay me to buy a bright blue gpu. I would rather get a 580 new for 200, or a used 1070 for the same 200$

Well, if you are considering an amd graphics card your first choice should be a sapphire. Better build quality and cooling.

Any AMD gpu over $200 is a ripoff! THe GTX 1060 over $200 also ripoff. WTF? The 1060 3gb released for $160. XFX is cheap bottom of barrel products...
