The XFX "Fatboy" is a dual-fan solution for the AMD RX 590, using a revamped Polaris piece of silicon. It's the RX 580 refreshed, which is the RX 480 refreshed. The RX 590 is functionally a pre-overclocked RX 580, but maintains lower voltages at a given clock than its two predecessors. We will shortly be benchmarking the RX 590 and reviewing it on the channel.

It doesn't have to be that fat compared to other cards to earn the name fatboy.... wouldn't it make sense to you if they said it was the fattest RX card they've made? It doesn't seem that dumb to me.... I like it.
please test replacing the stainless steal plate with a thermal pad or something? I would love to see the results, to see if you could get better thermals.
@@knifeyonline steel plate is better for memory to hold its stable temperatures. Memory will not overheat, but also will not be cooler than needs to be. Memory will have longer life span with this solution.
Do the RX 590 and RX 580 have the exact same size/footprint? I want to purchase a water cooler for the RX 590 I just purchased. If they're the same, then I can just get a RX 580 water cooler, else I have to wait for a RX 590 to be made. Thanks in advance!
dude, stainless steel is not magnetic. this is a piece of steel . polished or nickel coated . the only magnetic stainless steel , is the martensitic one . but no reason because expensive . mostly used in the oil industrie. regards .
Technically you didn't remove the sticker. You removed the screw and put a hole in the sticker.

My wife is a lawyer, I've had to deal with arguments of this nature. What you have said is 100% true! The sticker was NOT removed.
@@scottstamm7022 hahaha... funy to hear that.

Doesn't matter in the US market anyway they can't void your warranty for removing the sticker, and I confirmed with xfx when I did a TIM swap on my RX 580 that they wouldn't consider it an issue at all if I were to do so, which I did. Not sure about anyone else's experience but my TIM was either low quality or had terrible application, meaning constant fan spin even when idle, but Kryonaut fixes that right up.

+Gamers Nexus Did you check if that plate is steel?
Nickel is a feromagnetic material. It's rated at 90W/(m K).
Where do you get the 70W/(m K) for stainless steel? My charts (and every online source I double checked with) show stainless steel at 16W/(m K).
It would make no sense at all to use steel of any kind in that part of a cooler design.
It would make some sense to use Nickel, it's dirty cheap and has acceptable thermal conductivity.
Nickel isn't dirt cheap, it's about twice as expensive as copper.

XFX sucks, I've bought 2 cards from them and they both failed within the first year. Then we went through a lovely period of RMA hell, where I never got a working card back. Don't buy XFX. pick any other brand and save yourself the trouble.

Yeah no valid reason other than it being one of the first 590s I FUCKING LOVE IT when people pretend to know better than manufacturers
From my viewpoint as a customer, there are no redeeming factors to XFX and the way they treat their customers when something does go wrong. They've been lazy with their designs ever since the mid 2000's and seems like they have not learned a single thing since then. Sure it can be possible that you get a doa from any manufacturer, but I've always had a replacement delivered asap and the problem has been taken care of..... except for the XFX guys
Why didn’t XFX stick to the slick Hd 7000 series design it was soo clean and simplistic , instead we have something hideous that rivals gigabyte and msi‘s designs
Yup, cooler was not so amazing in performance but it looked beautiful. Still rocking a 7870 on my old sandy bridge i5... this reminds me I should change the thermal paste on it... well thanks :D
I loved their 7000 series coolers. I bought a 7770 specifically for that brushed metal with red sides - it looked so clean and understated.

I find it disappointing that there aren't more CUs. Only being a 480 overclocked for the 2nd time doesn't seem like it should qualify as being a x90 card.
Agreed, I thought it would be a dual-GPU in a single PCB design, like the x990 cards of old.
it doesn't matter if they give t more CU's , it is so memory bandwith starved is silly
Seems like 40CU Polaris is reserved solely for XBOX Scorpio!
@@WiiNV Right, AMD obviously has produced Polaris GPUs with higher CU counts. Maybe the process doesn't have strong enough yields to effectively roll out a die with more CUs.
PS: Although... xX_Bone_Xx actually has more CUs than it needs so they can shut off some, and this increases yields. IDK why they couldn't do something similar for the 590... :/
At least the game deals are pretty fuckin good
People are saying the 590 is "disappointing" or "boring" but considering the 580 is the best midrange card right now, this is nothing but good for people like me, who are looking to pick up a used 580 or something similar.

Love to see the next video on AMD RX 590 mod cooling!
If you start a ticket with XFX asking about the warranty and modifying it (to water cool the part or put an aftermarket cooler, or even just change thermal paste), they are perfectly fine with it. They just tell you to return it back to as-manufactured condition before you send it back for warranty.
So just preserve the original thermal pads and the cooler as you do your mods, and keep the cooler tucked away for returning it back to stock form and you are good with modifying the cards. I got this tip a while back and it is why I bought an XFX reference card so I could do my mods to the cooling prior to aftermarket versions coming later. The mod allows it to fit my specific use case :)
More than 70 percent gpus out there are low to midrange, amd is actually playing very well in this market and after seeing the rtx benchmark of bf 5 it actually makes sense why amd decide not to go for real time Ray tracing.

@@WiiNV That's without ray tracing. Using regular rasterization tech. Enabling DXR removes that. The same thing happens when you look at any reflection without DXR enabled.
@Karan Vora they are trying to go for ray tracing. But they can't since they are unable to compete at the high end market. They're gearing towards it none the less since it is the future of game development.
@smoked_out Not sure you realise how big of an achievement this is.
@ UHD Gaming PC Its Not that AMD doesn't do anything for realtime raytraciging. Radeon Rays exists longer than RTX, it's just used for professional applications where, in contrast to gaming, realtime raytracing make sense right now.

Fatboy - That's a pretty ballsy marketing name in this day and age. A total lack of body positivity whilst doubling down by assuming the card's gender? Someone somewhere on Twitter is going to be massively offended. Calling it.
Or maybe not everybody lives in your hyperbolic circlejerk that thinks pink-haired tumblr extremists tule the whole world somehow
Assuming a gender to card, 😂
Lol :D
That's True it may be suffering from gender identity issues and forcing it's male part into a female expansion slot might make it worse for the card's self esteem.
Bruh
590x2 when
They could totally do it too. The card performs about 3-4% slower than an RX580 when undervolted, but will consume only 146 watts. So AMD could tune the voltages and clocks and slap two of these on one PCB, and just do a limited run of these cards since not many people will be buying these.
@@Shieftain Good idea in theory but let's be honest, dual-GPU setups are dying with 2 separate cards, let alone 2 on one board.
@@Peterraawwrr Yeah, which is why I said limited run. Alternatively they could've also maybe made 4GB versions of this card and optimize the frequencies and voltages for max efficiency, and sell it as an RX575 or something.
@@Shieftain I personally think it should be called a 585. They did something similar with the R9 2xx series. And I still don't see the point in the X2 version, all that R&D for a limited run? Surely a dual Vega or something would be much better use of resources.

You can improve cooling by applying thermal paste below the VRAM steel contact plate and applying thick thermal-pad on the whole backside of the video card touching the back-plate. And of course replacing the GPU die thermal paste with liquid metal.

XFX is good. i have xfx rx 480 and im very happy with it
Nope, keep away from this design (maybe it's good in other models but in rx 580 and 590 it sucks) a lot of coil whine, bad heatsink, A LOT of noise of the "silent" fans and awful design, you are much better with a Sapphire Nitro card.
The steel plate is for electrical resistance to help prevent shorting or cross communication between components.
The alu block is extruded and then sliced, you can see the cut marks. The plate you see added is to expand the reach of the cooler. It helps to reduce cost as machining time is expensive.

So, it's a a580, that's a 480, that's same performance as the 390...which was the same as the 290x....dang, AMD has mastered the re-branding.
290 to 390 was a refresh, Polaris was a new arch that brought the price way down for the same performance. 580 was rebrand with an oc, the 590 is to the 580 as a 2700x is to an 1800x
Also nvidia just opts to downgrade their cards and keep the same name, but dont slap them for it
@@james2042 Never said otherwise, just has same performance. 290x/390 was a rebrand, as the 480/580/590 is a rebrand. The 480 had less processors than the 290x/390, and performed the same (though couldn't overclock for the most part).

I have a XFX 590 and although the GPU it self does not overheat, something on the card does and causes my entire system to crash. Only when gaming though. Running a FurMark test does not cause it to crash, only gaming. I did notice that gaming pulls more watts than FurMark according to Hardware Monitor.
On a open test bench it seems to run and work fine, but inside a closed case... like people in the real world would use it, something on the card overheats. Even if I override the fans to 100%... eventually... crash. The retailer I bought the card from had it on a open bench and it was fine. They didn't even have a case to test it in. They have a case now and will test it next week.

Back plates are sometimes meant for the card's rigidity. It might still be functional, just not the way you imagine.
My only guess for the steel plate is to insulate it from the direct heat of GPU's temps. The block gets hot very quick, and I'm sure the memory will eventually get to the same temp, but it prevents it from the quick temp changes which might affect the functionality. After a lengthy process of research, this is the card I've come to buying considering my price point and performance balance. I purchased mine for $179.99 on Amazon. What's funny is there was an RX 580 (XFX) Black Edition for $190.00 which performs less (Proof some vendors don't really keep up with competitive pricing). Whattttt... anyway. Very excited. First thing I'll do is test out Battlefront 2 with his baby, maybe the Celebration Edition (The side looks like Kylo Ren's mask, did you notice?) and then jump straight into VR with my Oculus Rift S! Seriously though, at that price point for getting some pretty decent graphics quality... I'm not complaining.
Yes try one of those pads like Accelero provides with their newer gpu coolers.
Maybe the steel is stamped? Possibly it was cheaper than the tooling for cast aluminum? Definitely cheaper than machining process for a unique shape plate. Maybe stiffness of stainless required to ensure positive contact with memory while maintaining dimensional tolerance? Lots of manufacturing variables to consider.

There is function in backplates other than heat transfer.... It helps when handling the card so you don't touch any of the connections on the back.
at 14:39, the mounting thingie could be nickel, which also happens to be magnetic just like iron but is a much better conductor of heat
THey made that middle plate steve gets out at 15:45 because most probably that heatsink design is shared with vega 56. On Vega's case, there is no need for that plate (or more like: it was designed first without that plate in mind and it was added later for RX 590) because the copper shim at the center touches both HBM and GPU die. On this card they needed to cool the GDDR5 memory so they added another piece that most likely if it were there in the first place and wasnt detachable, would have interfered with Vega 56's VRM solution.
Please do three tests for the back plate. One with the back plate in place , one without the back plate and one with the back plate but add some thermal pads.
I've been doing some research myself on the card, and honestly, for the price, I'd say it's a pretty good buy compared to Nvidia at the moment.
The autofocus is killing me lol. Otherwise great, thanks again for the great videos!
I'm sure you are aware of this but angled needle nose pliers, wether 45° or 90°, really help with removing small electrical connectors like that. Crucial with small connectors on cars where all sorts of dirt/debris/grime can get into the connector and lock it solid. Pulled way too many wires out of connectors before I started using either application specific pullers or just angled plain needle noses in random situations.
Keep up the great work tech truth Jesus.
Ive gotta give you boys at Nexus some mad props for uploading 4k and down at 60 fps, so many do not and it provides a much more enjoyable viewing experience.
memory - pad - stainless - AIRGAP - alu/copper depending on how memory temps go if they get hot can you try placing paste in the airgap or removing the stainless and using double pads.
im guessing the stainless is to adapt a cooler from a existing line to that lower memory chip as alu would just bend considering how far out that chip is.
I'm sure it's been said, but being the stickler for history that I am... The nukes we dropped were named Fat Man and Little Boy respectively. Also, being slightly portly myself, literally screaming rn frfr.
Keep up the good work!
Hey team, wondering if you might invest on a digital document camera/digital microscope/something inbetween along the lines that Louis Rossman uses in his board repair clips...? Your closeup shooting is excellent I just wonder if that sort of camera setup might give you some more control when working this closely with a board... (i think its the camera shake due to the zoom level that is setting off my OCD) 😀
Shame about the price versus performance.... have to wonder what Polaris would run like on GDDR6 or Vega for that matter...
OMG, the power cables in the hair! I've never seen that before. Hilarious! Now that is Tech-Jesus.
05:00 I had exactly same problem unplugging fan cables from ASUS GTX 950 2GD5. That was really impossible unplug cables with no damaging connector.
If you replace the thermal compound of those cards with a good aftermarket compound, does this usually improve temps / noise?
Looking at the underside of the cooler, my theory would be that during manufacturing they press in the aluminium fins into the copper base and heatpipe assembly and needed an easy way to correct for the differing z-height to contact the memory. Even with stainless steel being a only about half as good a heat conductor as aluminium, the amount of heat the modules produce might not be enough for it to really matter. Now, where's Buildzoid when you need him to work out the amount of heat they are producing?
I hope Steve upload the benchmark test 15 Minutes later from now
The vram runs hot, but not because the plate is steel. The steel plate was stamped on the wrong side, leaving a raised edge that prevents it from making proper contact with the block. Removing the raised edge with some sandpaper or a file (as well as adding a dab of thermal paste) lowers vram temps considerably.
5:04 oh, this majestic tools set
Tools... ha ok
Nice crown of thorns by the way!
