Oost-Indisch vaarderslied [Dutch East Indies song] (1600's)

- -History:
The Dutch East Indies or Verenigde Oost-Indïsche Compagnie (VOC for short) was the most profitable company in all of history. There is a lot to tell about the history of the VOC but I will keep it short and compact here. The founding of the VOC was the result of the first stock market invented in the Netherlands. The VOC lasted until the dutch got occupied by napoleon in 1795 and the Batavian Republic was established. The map shown in the video is not what the VOC used to own at the time of it's existance, but rather what the Dutch East Indies held on to, after the VOC went bankrupt. I used it since I didnt know a specific year of when this song was made and I didn't want the borders to be incorrect. I do know the song first appeared in 1678. This song is technically a sea-shanty. The song is about a dutch VOC seaman, traveling to Batavia (Nowadays Jakarta) wich was the capital of the VOC and later the Dutch East Indies. He starts off in Amsterdam where he gets aboard a VOC vessel at 'Monckelmans Steyger' ( a well known jetty). He then sails to Batavia to collect spices like peper. After arriving in Batavia he goes back to the Netherlands, only to long to go back to Asia again. Back in the Netherlands he notices how wealthy all the men are that had business to do with the VOC.

Hell yeah dude thats awesome

I am English, I lived for many years in ysselstein and also nieuwegein. What a great place. Utrecht was my favourite Dutch city by far, do you remember the poffertjekraam that used to sit in the market place in Utrecht? I look at Utrecht on UA-cam now but a lot is unrecognisable to me as it's been redeveloped. Also the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant on zadelstraat was a favourite place to eat. 👍
At the end of the song he sings about how the sailors are Gentlemen of only six weeks. And how they show off their money and clothes. Sailors who came back from a voyage were actually called gentlemen for six weeks because it would take six weeks for the sailors to burn through all their money.😂
nah nah except for that one dude wareen boorfett who came back and immediately invested 95% of his capital into local agricultural funds and other oriental ventures, in 10 years amassing enough wealth to purchase the title of baron, but he kept living well below his means and in 40 years ruled the entire dutch empire

Even if I'm Indonesian, I can't help but empathize with seamen at the time, sailing far away to the Asia, Nusantara archipelago, to make a living. No wonder they also miss the place because sailing took a very long time. You'd have more than enough time to ponder during your journey back home that you wonder if you could turn back again and stay there. Nusantara doesn't look like foreign islands to you anymore, it's your 2nd home.
EDIT: typo and added some stuff.
I am a descendant of one such sailor who stayed... This was in the mid-1700s, and his family name (Wardenaar) became quite well known throughout the Dutch colonial period. I myself was born in Medan, grew up in Jakarta after spending 3-and-a-half years in Japanese concentration camps as a toddler. I had never seen Holland before I was 18. I was the last generation to be born and raised in Indonesia, travelled all my life all over the globe, not feeling at home anywhere. I am now 83 years old and I live in Australia. My greatgrandmother was a Javanese girl from Kediri in east Java, married to a Dutch concert pianist who decided to build pianos specifically suited to a tropical climate. He had factories in Jakarta and Surabaya. The Surabaya building still exists intact.
Though bad things happened in the Dutch Indies, we also brought you good things.
Personally, I'd think given how the countries are nowadays, we both would have been very fond of each other.
also compared to atlantic the east was way too diverse with european history back then because of japan, pharmacy, age of discovery and power, even scandinavian settled in jakarta before VOC (but not in a sense of conquest or actually settle but because of denmark east campaign) makes me wonder about the denmark east campaign more and denmark-dutch war or the christian war if there is any.

It would be great if you mentioned the performer - Camerata Trajectina. This wonderful group has recreated and performed hundreds of historical dutch songs, but unfortunately they remain rather unknown to the public.
Which group is it ?
Where do you get these songs?? They are so rare to find and man this one is just amazing
I'm glad you like it! Its a lot of research. I look on different sites and eventually just stumble upon songs like this, the deeper and harder i look.
My utmost thanks for doing that, for this is like quality music and it's hard to come by, finally one that rivals Merck toch hoe sterck.@@novabrabantia Groetjes uit Nederland

Beautiful song
Zij zouden domineren, zoals gezongen.
I understand your feelings about it, but to me as a Dutchman it feels more as a song of someone who went there for those reasons you mentioned, but ended up falling in love with what he saw there in Asia for different reasons. The song ends with him calling out the rich 'gentleman' with silk clothes, only missing the pearl he used to see over there and longing for it for it's beauty, not it's wealth.
I love my country

Me too... And I'm English 😂

my history teacher in highschool told me that it is such a great privilege for the dutch to be able to live in indonesia during colonial time. because if we comparing living standart for dutch people in netherland and in indonesia, living standart in indonesia are way better than in netherland. unlike netherland city that poluted with many things, getting your self a plot of land, build a home and spend your day breathing fresh air while looking at beautiful scenery, had become an ultimate dream for everyone in netherland for 350 years. that's why when indonesia gain independence from japan in 1945 and then full sovereignty in 1949, many dutch got depressed and can't cooped with life. to relief the mental pressure, those who can cooking indonesian food then decided to open restaurant specialized in serving indonesian food
The Dutch open a restaurant in Netherland with Indonesian food in it? That's something i never expect them to be

Ofcourse never draw conclusions when talking about history, but since the VOC was founded in 1602 I doubt it's any older.
