  • History:
Merck toch hoe Sterck is a Dutch independence song that dates back to the 17th century. The Dutch fought their indepenence form spain in the 80 years war. This war ended in 1648 with the treaty of Münster. In this treaty the Spanish would keep parts of the southern Netherlands and the Netherlands would be recognized as an independant nation by Spain.

Lyrics are wrong at 0:08 The translation would be "He who has ceaselessly fought against our freedom" in reference to the Spanish.

i never realized how different old dutch is to modern dutch, im not fluent, but i can still see the differences in the spelling, and even some of the words

If you read their Bible (1638) it's half a different language. Read their first translation attempt (1477 Delftbijbel) and it's completely different but you can work it out with some effort. The oldest Dutch literature I know is 13th Century, Van Den Vossche Reynaerde. Now, back to the 1638 Bible, that Dutch was used till the 19th Century but became easier (in our understanding) till the early 20th Century. But Dutch had very Germanic grammar. After WW2 Dutch conscientiously became a lot more English and French based to the point you can now say a Dutch sentence without using a Dutch word. Flemish from Belgium often represents Dutch more than modern Dutch does.

@@UwU-xk5cxI disagree, calling them marranos implies they're jews that converted which would be more insulting at the time.
