    This anthem makes my blood boil, and my heart pound with courage! And I'm not even French! When this was written, the French people were having a revolution against their own tyrant, and 7 nations of Europe were also invading France at the same time. Les Marseilles is truly a rallying cry of the people to fight for their land, their freedom. The French have taught the world a lesson about human rights and democracy, a lesson still needed today. Respect! ✊🏻

    • @ogakor
      @ogakor  6 років тому +140

      Powerful, indeed, but it was not intended to be a literal translation. You're right-- many non-French speakers will probably not understand the context of "sang impur." As I mentioned in the note accompanying the post, I weighed "literal accuracy, lyrical style, and contemporary US context."

      @@zefyrisd69 What are you talking about..... the french wanted a bloodbath and it turned up to be an unnecessary bloodbath, the King and the Queen were not tyrants, they were young and naive, the amount of people killed in the name of freedom is not a proud moment in the history of France, and worse, it's celebrated on the 14/07 every years, like it was a celebration of death. The commoners of France executed innocents, for what?, because they were noble or richer. I am french, and I do cry every time I hear La Marseillaise, but I am also realistic, that french revolution achieved nothing.

    A lot of French people think it's ridiculous to sing about spilling impure Prussian/German blood into the soil of France while the democratically elected German Chancellor takes the salute in Paris. The Algerians also refuse to revise their anthem's verbal attack on France which comes across as idiotic today.

    Stirring song, but the lyrics are very blood thirsty, but so are parts of the Star Spangled Banner. I would have liked some images of Charlemagne, Jon of Arc, Louie XIV and Louie XVI, Voltaire, Napoleon. De Lesseps, Louis Braille, Louis Pasture, Marshal Petain, Marshal Foch, PM Clem-ensue, Charles De Gaul, Joc Le Clare, Pepe La Pue, and Macron. Notice I left out Roe-sue because he was an ass. Maybe I should have put in Guillotine. for coming up with a "merciful" way to dispatch problem people.
